00:16Why just dream when you can venture?
00:29Many people use the words vertigo and dizziness interchangeably,
00:34but medically, they are not the same.
00:37Understanding the difference can help identify the cause
00:40and determine when it's time to seek medical care.
00:44Tonight on House Call, we're breaking down vertigo versus dizziness,
00:49what it feels like, and what the main causes are.
00:53Dizziness is a broad term used to describe feeling lightheaded, dizzy, faint, unsteady, or off balance.
01:02Vertigo, on the other hand, is more specific.
01:05It is a sensation that you or your surroundings are spinning even when you are still.
01:11So what causes dizziness?
01:13Dizziness can be caused by many factors, including dehydration, low blood pressure,
01:20low blood sugar, serves in medications, anxiety, or stress.
01:26Vertigo, on the other hand, is usually related to problems with the inner air
01:31or the centers of the brain responsible for balance.
01:34Common causes include
01:361. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, or BPPV.
01:42This is the most common cause of vertigo.
01:45It happens when tiny crystals in the inner air become displaced,
01:50leading to a sensation that the room is spinning, especially with head movements.
01:552. Vestibular neuritis
01:59This is inflammation of the nerve that transmits signals from the air to the brain.
02:05This is often accompanied with severe vertigo, feelings of imbalance, and nausea.
02:113. Meniere's disease
02:13This condition is associated with episodes of vertigo, hearing changes, ringing in the air,
02:20and a feeling of fullness in the air.
02:23Less commonly, neurological conditions.
02:26In some cases, vertigo may be associated with conditions such as stroke or brain disorders,
02:33especially if symptoms are sudden and severe and associated with difficulty speaking, weakness,
02:40and visual changes.
02:41So, when should you seek help?
02:44You should seek medical attention if your dizziness or vertigo is severe or persistent,
02:50is associated or accompanied with fainting, is associated with neurological symptoms such
02:57as fluid speech, weakness, or vision problems, or if it interferes with your ability to walk
03:04or remain steady.
03:05Not all dizziness is the same, and recognizing the difference between dizziness and vertigo
03:11can help guide the right care.
03:14If your symptoms are new, severe, and ongoing, it's important to get evaluated early.
