00:00Tonight's House Call segment, Dr. Mariana Brown shares with us how to stay healthy this carnival.
00:17Carnival is one of the most exciting times of the year, filled with music, energy, and long days in the sun.
00:25But it's important that you do not overlook your health during this time.
00:30Tonight on House Call, I'm going to share simple but essential tips so that you can feel safe, hydrated, and your best during this carnival season.
00:40Number one, be aware of drink spiking.
00:44Unfortunately, crowded celebrations can create a space for unsafe situations.
00:51Drink spiking occurs when somebody unknowingly adds alcohol or drugs to your drink.
00:56If you suddenly feel dizzy, confused, lack coordination after a small amount of alcohol, alert a trusted friend immediately.
01:07Watch your drink being prepared, avoid accepting drinks from strangers, and never leave your drink unattended.
01:15Number two, prioritize hydration.
01:18Between the heat, dancing, and alcohol, dehydration can happen very quickly.
01:23Drink water consistently throughout the day, not just when you're feeling thirsty.
01:30Coconut water and electrolyte drinks can help replace minerals that have been lost through sweat.
01:36If you are choosing to drink, a good guide is to alternate every alcoholic drink with water.
01:43Number three, pace your alcohol intake.
01:47Alcohol can worsen your dehydration and impair your judgment.
01:52Eat before drinking, avoid mixing multiple types of alcohol, and know your limits.
01:59You can even choose not to drink.
02:02Number four, protect your skin from the sun.
02:05Extended sun exposure increases your risk of dehydration, heat stroke, and sunburn.
02:12Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and reapply every two hours, especially if you're sweating.
02:22And don't forget commonly missed areas like your shoulders and behind your neck.
02:28Number five, recognize heat exhaustion early.
02:33Warning signs include heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, headache, and muscle cramps.
02:40Carnival should be memorable for the right reasons.
02:44Staying hydrated, protecting yourself from the sun, pacing your alcohol intake, and being aware of your surroundings can go a long way in keeping you safe.
02:57Enjoy the festivities, but make your health a priority this season.
