00:00This segment is brought to you by Superfarm, your prescription of trust.
00:15Today, I want to talk to you about cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in Trinidad and Tobago and worldwide.
00:23Cardiovascular disease is any disease that affects the heart or the blood vessels, leading to complications like stroke and heart attack.
00:30Cardiovascular disease occurs when you have damage to the blood vessels or you have clogged arteries.
00:36If you have damaged blood vessels or clogged arteries, then you're going to have reduced blood flow to some of your most vital organs, including your heart, your brain and your kidneys.
00:46Most patients don't know that they are at risk until they start to experience signs and symptoms like chest pain and shortness of breath.
00:53So what are your biggest risk factors of developing this disease?
00:57Diabetes, affecting 14% of the population. We spoke about that one last week.
01:02High blood pressure or hypertension.
01:05Dyslipidemia or elevated levels of cholesterol.
01:08And one that I think we don't talk about enough, stress.
01:11Symptoms may vary from person to person, but some of the most common symptoms are chest pain, sometimes that pain can radiate to the jaw or left arm, shortness of breath, dizziness and fatigue.
01:23The good news is you can lower your risk.
01:25Get control of your high blood pressure, your high blood sugar or your diabetes or the cholesterol levels in your body.
01:32It's time to move more.
01:33It's time to exercise more.
01:35Eat less processed and fried foods.
01:37And it's definitely time to manage your stress.
01:41If you're on medications, take your medications as prescribed and get regular checkups.
01:46When cardiovascular disease is ignored, it could lead to complications such as heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure or even amputation of one of your limbs.
01:57It does not just end your life.
01:59It can erode the quality of your life.
02:01Cardiovascular disease is preventable.
02:04Get your general checkups, know your numbers and change those bad habits so that you can live longer.
02:11Act now to protect your heart, to protect your brain and to protect your life.
02:16Thank you for listening.
