00:15Imagine trying to breathe through a straw.
00:18That's what asthma feels like.
00:21Asthma is one of the most common chronic conditions worldwide.
00:25And if it's not well controlled, it can affect the quality of your life.
00:31Tonight on House Call, we're going to talk about signs, symptoms, triggers, and how asthma is treated.
00:38Asthma is a condition where the airways of the lungs become reversibly inflamed and narrow, making it harder to breathe.
00:47Symptoms range from mild to life-threatening, and they often come and go.
00:51Common signs and symptoms include wheezing, a high-pitched whistling sound when you breathe, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, chest tightness or pressure on the chest, or a persistent cough, particularly at night or early in the morning.
01:12Triggers are things that can make asthma symptoms worse or bring on an attack.
01:17These can include allergens, like dust, pollen, or pet dander, exercise, especially in cold air, air pollution, like smoke, changes in weather, especially changes that result in humid weather, and respiratory infections, like the cold or flu.
01:40Treatment depends on how severe and how frequent your symptoms are.
01:44Mild asthma is often treated with a rescue inhaler.
01:49These are used only when symptoms appear.
01:52Also, you must avoid your triggers.
01:55Great or persistent asthma often require a daily controller inhaler that contains steroids to help reduce airway inflammation.
02:05This is combined with a rescue inhaler for flare-ups.
02:08Your doctor should also recommend lifestyle adjustments and sometimes oral medication to help keep your asthma under control.
02:19And in severe cases, nebulization, hospitalization may be required.
02:25With the right treatment plan, most people with asthma can live active, healthy lives.
02:32If you are having coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, don't ignore it.
02:39Asthma can be managed, but only if it's treated.
02:43Learn your triggers and work with your doctor to come up with the right treatment plan for your symptoms.
02:51And be consistent.
