00:17Many people hear the term heart failure and think that the heart has suddenly stopped working.
00:22But that's not actually what heart failure is.
00:25Heart failure is when the heart becomes too weak or stiff to pump blood around the body effectively.
00:34And often, your body gives warning signs long before the condition becomes critical.
00:40Tonight on House Call, we're discussing what heart failure actually feels like,
00:45common causes, and when it's time to seek medical attention.
00:49When the heart cannot pump efficiently, fluid can build up around the lungs and other parts of the body.
00:57Because of this fluid buildup, people with heart failure may experience shortness of breath.
01:04At first, this may happen with physical activity.
01:08But over time, even walking short distances or climbing the stairs may become difficult.
01:15Difficulty lying flat.
01:17Some people will need extra pillows to sleep comfortably.
01:21Or even wake up in the middle of the night feeling breathless.
01:25Swelling in the feet, ankles, or legs.
01:28This occurs because fluid begins to accumulate in the body when the heart cannot pump blood effectively.
01:35Fatigue and weakness.
01:36Many people report exhaustion handling tasks that they previously handled with ease.
01:44Rapid weight gain.
01:45A sudden increase in weight over a few days may represent fluid retention rather than body fat.
01:54Persistent coughing or wheezing.
01:56In some cases, fluid buildup in the lungs may cause coughing, wheezing, or a sensation of chest congestion.
02:04Here are some of the most common causes of heart failure.
02:09Longstanding uncontrolled high blood pressure.
02:13Previous heart attacks or coronary artery disease.
02:17Uncontrolled diabetes.
02:20Certain viral infections.
02:22Valvular heart disease.
02:24And weakened heart muscle conditions known as cardiomyopathies.
02:28If you notice worsening shortness of breath, swelling, weight gain, and difficulty lying flat, it is time to seek medical
02:38evaluation early.
02:41Recognizing these symptoms promptly can help prevent hospitalization and serious complications.
02:48Heart failure does not mean that your heart has stopped working, but it does mean your heart needs help.
02:56Early diagnosis, treatment, and lifestyle changes can make a significant difference in your quality of life and your long-term
03:05health.
