Many patients are experiencing flu-like symptoms.
00:19
Sore throat, cough, body pains, fever, and even weakness.
00:25
But what happens when these symptoms turn into something more serious?
00:30
We're going to talk about viral illnesses, when it's time to see a doctor,
00:35
and when your viral illness can progress into something more serious known as pneumonia.
00:42
Many viral illnesses such as influenza start in the upper respiratory tract,
00:48
that is your nose, sinuses, and your throat.
00:51
Usually, these infections are mild and resolves with rest and hydration.
00:58
However, if this viral illness moves to your lower respiratory tract,
01:03
then you can get a more serious infection known as pneumonia.
01:09
Pneumonia is an infection of the lower respiratory tract or the small airways of the lungs.
01:15
And if that gets infected, then it can have some serious complications.
01:20
And some of those complications are life-threatening.
01:23
So how do you know if you need medical attention?
01:27
Well, you're going to watch out for these warning signs.
01:30
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, particularly when you're at rest.
01:35
Chest pains, particularly when you're coughing or you're taking deep breaths.
01:40
A high fever that does not resolve with over-the-counter medicine.
01:46
Confusion or dizziness, which can be a sign of more serious infection.
01:51
And a persistent cough, especially if it produces bloody mucus or a coloured sputum or cold.
01:59
These symptoms are all signals that your viral illness has turned into something more serious
02:05
and requires professional medical help.
02:08
Viral illnesses are extremely common.
02:11
But when your symptoms start to get worse or take a change,
02:14
then don't hesitate to get checked.
02:16
Early intervention is key in preventing complications from pneumonia.
02:22
Remember, it is better to be safe than sorry.
