00:00Dust is all around us, and in tonight's house school segment, Dr. Mariana Brown talks about the health impact of
00:06it.
00:17You may have noticed haziest skies and reduced visibility.
00:22This is due to increased concentrations of Sahara dust across the region.
00:27While it may look just like dust, this can have serious effects on your health.
00:33Tonight on House Call, we're going to discuss what Sahara dust is, who is at risk, what it can do
00:41to your body, and what you can do to protect yourself.
00:44Sahara dust originates from the Sahara Desert in North Africa.
00:49Strong winds lift sand and mineral particles high into the atmosphere.
00:54These particles travel thousands of miles across the Atlantic to the Caribbean.
01:00But it's not just sand.
01:02Sahara dust clouds also contain tiny particulate matter, pollutants, and even microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi.
01:11These particles are particularly small, and when inhaled, they can trigger inflammation and irritate your respiratory system.
01:20For many people, Sahara dust is only going to trigger mild symptoms.
01:25Itchy or watery eyes, a blocked or runny nose, sneezing, coughing, or even a dry throat.
01:34However, for others, especially those with underlying conditions, it can have more serious effects.
01:41Because the particles are so fine, they can penetrate deep within the lung tissue, causing airway inflammation and irritation.
01:50Those most vulnerable include people with asthma, individuals with chronic lung diseases, the elderly, people aged greater than 65,
02:01young children, pregnant women, and people with heart disease.
02:06To protect yourself during high dust periods, keep your windows closed, limit your outdoor activity, use air condition or air
02:17purifiers,
02:19wear a properly filtered mask when outdoors, stay hydrated, and if you are asthmatic or you have a chronic lung
02:27disease,
02:28use your prescribed medication and your inhalers.
02:32And of course, if you experience shortness of breath, chest pain, wheezing, and any whistling symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.
02:44Sahara dust is a natural environmental event, but its health effects can be significant, especially for vulnerable individuals.
02:53Stay informed, monitor air quality updates, and take precautions to protect your lungs and overall health.
03:02It's Dr. Mariana Brown for TB6 Health School.
