00:14Did you know that 1 in 10 people suffer from chronic kidney disease and they don't even know it?
00:20In the Caribbean, the risk is even higher, where diabetes and hypertension are common.
00:25Today, we're going to talk about chronic kidney disease, also known as CKD.
00:30Who's at risk and what signs you need to look out for before it's too late?
00:35Your kidneys are two bean-shaped organs.
00:37Their job? Removing waste and toxins, balancing fluids and electrolytes, and even regulating your blood pressure.
00:46Chronic kidney disease, or CKD, means that your kidneys are slowly getting damaged over time.
00:51It doesn't happen overnight. It can take years.
00:54And as your kidney function declines, you're going to get a build-up of waste and toxins.
00:59And this can lead to fatigue, high blood pressure, and even kidney failure, that may eventually require dialysis.
01:08The two highest risk factors, diabetes and hypertension.
01:12Over time, these conditions can damage the small vessels within the kidneys.
01:17Other risk factors include people that are above the age of 60, people that are smokers, and people that have a family history of chronic kidney disease.
01:27Chronic kidney disease is often known as a silent disease.
01:31That's because you feel fine when you have early disease.
01:34However, as the disease progresses, you may see signs and symptoms like swelling in the feet, ankles, or face, feeling tired all the time, a metallic taste in the mouth, itchy skin, and changes in your urination.
01:47That could include either urinating more than usual, urinating less than usual, or foam on top of the urine.
01:54If you're having these symptoms, then it's a sign that your kidneys may already be struggling.
01:59If you have high blood pressure or even a family history, don't wait.
02:04Go to the doctor and ask for a test for your kidneys.
02:06You can check the creatinine in the blood, or you can ask for a simple urinalysis that will check the protein in the urine.
02:14These simple tests can catch kidney disease while it's still manageable.
02:18Your kidneys may be silent, but they're working 24-7.
02:22Let's protect them before it's too late.
