00:14High blood pressure or hypertension is one of the leading quarters of kidney disease, heart disease and stroke.
00:22But most people don't know there are two types, primary hypertension and secondary hypertension.
00:28Tonight on House Call, we're focusing on primary hypertension.
00:33High blood pressure caused by lifestyle factors and genetic changes and not by any other medical condition.
00:41Let's break down high blood pressure, what it is, who's at risk and what you need to know to stay healthy.
00:48High blood pressure is when the force of the blood is too much against your arterial walls or your blood vessels for too long.
00:56Over time, this can cause damage to your major organs such as your brain, heart, kidneys and even your eyes.
01:05There are two main stages.
01:07Stage 1 is when your systolic or your top number is between 130 to 139 and your diastolic pressure, the bottom number, is between 80 to 89.
01:19Stage 2 hypertension is when your systolic blood pressure is greater than 140 and your diastolic blood pressure is greater than 90, representing a more elevated blood pressure and putting an increased risk of the person developing end organ damage.
01:37Now let's talk about five important things that you need to know about hypertension or high blood pressure.
01:45Number one, it has no symptoms and is often referred to as a silent killer.
01:51Patients often present when high blood pressure has already caused damage.
01:55For example, if a patient is experiencing chest pain, then they may have already had damage to their heart from prolonged levels of high blood pressure that has gone untreated.
02:09Number two, your family history matters.
02:12I've said this before, but your parents are a crystal ball into the future.
02:17If your parents or your siblings have high blood pressure, then it's definitely time to get checked.
02:22Number three, salt, stress and lifestyle often play a role.
02:28If you are overweight, you are not exercising and you're eating a diet that's high in salt and you're not managing your stress, you are at increased risk of having high blood pressure.
02:38Number four, it's not just for older people.
02:40People in their 30s now are often presenting with high blood pressure.
02:45Lastly, it is manageable and it's preventable.
02:48With a low salt diet, exercise, stress management, a proper sleep hygiene and sometimes medication, you can help protect your organs and lower your high blood pressure.
03:02Whether you're feeling fine or not, ask your doctor to check your blood pressure or check your blood pressure at home.
03:10Know your numbers and with the right lifestyle changes, you can live a longer and healthier life.
03:16Prevention starts with awareness.
