Bengaluru: A 27-year-old man was allegedly tied, blindfolded, and set on fire by his girlfriend in a shocking incident reported on Tuesday afternoon. Police suspect the murder was premeditated.

The incident took place around 2 pm in Anjananagar under the jurisdiction of Byadarahalli Police Station. The victim, identified as Kiran, had reportedly visited the accused woman’s house when she was alone.

According to police, the accused, identified as Prema alias Prerna (27), allegedly told Kiran she wanted to propose to him in a “western style.” She then tied his hands and legs with a rope and blindfolded him. When Kiran questioned the restraints, she reportedly assured him it was part of the act.

Investigators said the woman later poured a flammable liquid, suspected to be kerosene, on him and set him ablaze. Kiran suffered severe burn injuries and died on the spot.

Police believe the crime may have been planned in advance, noting that the flammable substance had allegedly been arranged beforehand. Authorities are also probing claims that the accused may have recorded the incident on her mobile phone.

Both Kiran and the accused were employed at a Vi store near Bashyam Circle in Rajajinagar, where they became acquainted and later entered into a relationship. Police said the two had been in a relationship for over a year, but tensions had recently developed, with the accused reportedly upset that Kiran was distancing himself and unwilling to marry her.

On the day of the incident, Kiran had allegedly gone to pick up the woman for work related to a new Vi connection near Nelamangala. The two later went to her residence in the Gadde Khan area, where the crime occurred.

Senior police officials, including Deputy Commissioner of Police (North West) D.L. Nagesh, visited the scene. “We have taken the woman into custody. During questioning, it has been established that she set the man on fire. A murder case has been registered and further investigation is underway,” he said.

Police are now reconstructing the sequence of events to determine the exact motive and the extent of planning involved in the case.
