“Namaz on Road Lands Man in Jail” Viral Video Triggers Police Action in UP’s Rampur

Rampur: A young man was arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district after a video showing him offering namaz in the middle of a busy road went viral on social media.

The incident reportedly took place at Shahbad Gate intersection under the Civil Lines police station area, where the man was seen praying on the road, leading to traffic disruption and a crowd gathering at the spot.

Taking cognisance of the viral video, police registered a case against the accused for obstructing a public place. The man, identified as Naeem (35), a resident of Dhavni Hasanpur in Bilaspur area and employed at a local hotel, was taken into custody and later sent to jail after being produced before a court.

Additional Superintendent of Police Anurag Singh confirmed the action, stating that the arrest was made after the video surfaced online. “A video from the Civil Lines area showed a man offering namaz in the middle of the road. Based on this, an FIR was registered and the accused has been arrested,” he said.

Police officials stated that such activities on public roads can disrupt traffic and impact law and order, which prompted immediate action.

The development comes amid ongoing enforcement measures in Uttar Pradesh to regulate religious activities in public spaces. Authorities have repeatedly emphasised that public roads cannot be used for religious practices without permission, especially if they cause inconvenience to the public.

At the same time, legal provisions distinguish between public and private spaces. Courts, including the Allahabad High Court, have clarified that while authorities can act against religious activities conducted on public roads, offering prayers within private premises remains protected under the right to religious freedom.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that some locals have claimed the accused may be mentally unstable. Police said this aspect is also being examined as part of the investigation.

Authorities have appealed to the public to carry out religious activities only at designated places to avoid disruption and maintain public order.
