“WhatsApp Plot Behind Noida Violence?” Labour Group Members Arrested as Protests Turn Violent

Noida: The Noida Police have arrested Rupesh Rai and Manisha, members of the left-wing labour group Mazdoor Bigul Dasta, in connection with recent worker protests over low wages that escalated into violence, including arson and disruption of factory operations.

According to officials, the protests began peacefully in early April 2026 across industrial sectors such as 60, 63, 84 and 140, with workers demanding wage hikes. However, the situation later turned violent, with incidents of road blockades, vandalism and fires reported from multiple locations.

During the investigation, police uncovered alleged premeditated planning through at least 17 WhatsApp groups. These groups were reportedly used to incite workers and coordinate shutdowns. So far, more than 300 people have been arrested, including 18 individuals linked directly to these digital groups.

Rupesh Rai, identified as the main accused, was detained after police recovered WhatsApp chats from his phone allegedly showing messages instigating unrest. Officials said planning for the protests began in early April through union meetings.

Manisha was arrested along with Rupesh, Aakriti and Srishti on April 11 near the Botanical Garden Metro Station following a demonstration. Police also detained several other women activists aged between 25 and 30, and noted the involvement of “external elements” in escalating the unrest.

Police said Mazdoor Bigul Dasta, a labour mobilisation group reportedly based in Lucknow, had been active across industrial areas and is suspected of turning peaceful protests violent. The group has also been linked to previous incidents in Haryana.

Authorities further stated that three groups in total have been identified in connection with the unrest, which led to forced factory closures despite some worker demands reportedly being met. Digital evidence from the WhatsApp groups is currently under forensic examination.

The investigation is ongoing, and officials said strict action will be taken against those found responsible.
