A massive fire broke out at the Pachpadra Refinery in Rajasthan’s Balotra district on Monday, triggering panic just a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to inaugurate the facility on April 21.

According to preliminary information, the fire erupted in one of the refinery’s processing units. Thick plumes of smoke were visible from nearly a kilometre away, indicating the intensity of the blaze. However, no casualties have been reported so far.

More than 20 fire tenders were rushed to the spot, and firefighting teams launched a large-scale operation to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading to other units. Technical experts and security agencies have also reached the site to assess the situation and determine the cause of the fire, which remains unknown.

The incident has put the administration on high alert. BJP district president Bharat Modi said that entry into the refinery premises has been restricted, and the situation appears to be under control from the outside. He added that Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma is expected to visit the site to review the situation.

Reacting to the development, former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot expressed concern, calling the refinery a “proud project” for the state and terming the incident unfortunate, especially with the inauguration scheduled the next day.

Authorities said their immediate priority is to fully contain the fire and ensure safety within the refinery. The incident has also raised concerns over whether the scheduled inauguration programme will proceed as planned.
