Chandigarh: Allegations of widespread corruption in Punjab’s land registration process have resurfaced after former national-level cricketer Pulkit Sharma claimed he was forced to pay bribes to multiple officials to complete a property transaction.

Taking to X, Sharma alleged that despite having “fully legitimate” documents, he had to pay bribes to a tehsildar and over 28 others involved in the process.

In his post, Sharma described the system as deeply entrenched, claiming that “everyone has their rate fixed” and even a minor mistake could result in files being deliberately stalled. He termed the experience “shameful” and said that investing in Punjab felt “criminal” despite the transparency of the deal.

The post quickly went viral, triggering a wave of reactions on social media. While many users echoed concerns about alleged corruption and inefficiencies in government processes, others questioned the claims, stating that not all land registrations involve bribery and that such practices persist partly because people comply instead of reporting them.

Amid the growing controversy, Sharma reportedly stood by his allegations, further claiming that brokers operate openly outside tehsil offices and that officials often raise repeated objections or delay work to pressure applicants into making payments.

Meanwhile, Sharma’s account on X is currently unavailable, adding to speculation and debate online.

The incident has once again brought focus on alleged irregularities in land registration systems and the need for greater transparency and accountability in administrative processes.
