00:08Future Echo is it?
00:10So it's Future Echo, so it went out
00:11Yeah, Future Echo was actually the fifth show we ever wrote
00:16and the fourth show we recorded
00:20because we dropped one of them
00:21and it was sort of really the first one
00:24that was a science fiction show
00:26as I remember
00:27Yes it was, because we've been told not to have any science fiction
00:30in this science fiction series
00:31It turned people off
00:33It did turn people off
00:34and as we've already discussed
00:36no one liked science fiction
00:37so it would have been idiotic to write science fiction
00:40and after a few shows
00:42we thought we might be able to sneak some in, didn't we?
00:44Yeah
00:46And I remember actually
00:48we suddenly thought
00:49this is interesting
00:52The science fiction thing could work
00:57And Split Screens
00:58it was the first sort of split screen
01:00effect-y kind of show we ever did
01:01It was
01:02It was
01:03It was the complex one
01:05and at that stage again
01:07Split Screens was about it really
01:08Yeah
01:09You could have a split screen
01:10or a split screen
01:12But it wasn't like
01:14you know
01:15everybody did split screens every other day
01:17it was a fairly rare thing on TV at the time
01:19I remember when we went over to do the American version
01:21and there was a split screen in that
01:23and they were absolutely useless at locking off the camera
01:26and completely paranoid about going over the split
01:28there were people like one end of the room
01:29It was wide shot
01:31with everything in between
01:32and they were all terrified of encroaching on the split
01:37and I remember that
01:38there's a terrific shot in it
01:40the double lister scene
01:41where Rimmer walks through
01:44and has the conversation
01:45and then he walks in again
01:47just as he's walking out
01:48and that's when I thought
01:49oh well
01:50maybe it wasn't such a bad idea after all
01:52Right
01:52So that was a full show
01:53Luckily I talked to somebody else
01:54about how to do that
01:55who was better
01:57So
01:58the Radio Times
02:00Show 2
02:00Red Dwarf
02:02Comedy series set in space
02:03This is some reading from Radio Times
02:05There's a scrapbook here
02:07Future Echoes
02:07Having accelerated constantly
02:09for three million years
02:10Red Dwarf breaks the light barrier
02:11Rimmer and Lister overtake themselves in time
02:13and witness images from the future
02:14Then Rimmer sees Lister die
02:17And here are some reviews
02:19You want to hear some good reviews?
02:22Right
02:24We're talking February 1988
02:26We're talking about the 22nd of February
02:28Yes
02:29Daily Mirror
02:30Can't say I'd heard the word
02:31smeghead before this series began
02:33but as applied to Arnold Rimmer
02:35it seems perfect
02:36to describe a prized space head case
02:39like him
02:39That's a good one
02:41That is a good one
02:41How about this one?
02:42This is a good one
02:44The trouble with BBC 2's Red Dwarf
02:46is Brown Dwarf
02:48Craig Charles
02:49That's outrageous
02:50Outrageous
02:51Whose chirpy
02:52Liverpoolian space wanderer
02:54lacks charm
02:55charisma
02:55and even it seems
02:56a change of clothes
02:57Craig's space chariot
02:59is drifting towards infinity
03:00I only hope
03:01it falls into a black hole
03:03on the way
03:03Brown Dwarf
03:05Who's that?
03:06That's somebody called
03:07Hilary Kingsley
03:10Hilary Kingsley
03:11It was actually the Daily Mirror
03:12but I put the Daily Racist
03:14Yes
03:14Daily Racist
03:15is above here
03:16Now this might be an opportunity
03:18for me to mention a review
03:19on the show
03:21that was in
03:22stage and television today
03:2318th February 1988
03:26Blah blah blah blah blah
03:27blah blah blah blah
03:28blah blah
03:28Far from an easy piece to direct
03:30Ed By
03:31I did an excellent job
03:33and Paul Jackson was
03:34introducing this series
03:35So
03:37I don't think there's anything
03:38more interesting
03:38you can really say
03:39about that particular episode
03:40I didn't know your mum
03:40worked for the stage
03:43Keep my mum out of this
03:45Yes so Future Echoes
03:46It was quite tricky to shoot
03:47and difficult to write
03:49presumably
03:50Yeah
03:50I remember rehearsals
03:52I mean
03:53when we were writing it
03:54we were drawing diagrams
03:55and saying
03:57and rehearsals
03:57you
03:58spending a lot of time
03:59lying on your back
04:00trying to wrap your head
04:01around what was supposed
04:02to have just happened
04:03Oh
04:05And we were all just
04:06you know
04:06That double scene
04:07The echo scene
04:08The difficulty with the double scene
04:09is you can't really rehearse it
04:11because
04:12you get somebody else
04:13to play the person
04:14who's coming in the other side
04:15to meet themselves
04:15Yeah
04:16And you go right
04:17now you're you
04:18and that person is you too
04:19now you can be you again
04:21and then you go and have lunch
04:23That's what happened I think
04:24Yeah
04:25But what I enjoyed most about it
04:27was that it was science fiction
04:28and it was
04:29you know
04:30it was a time conundrum show
04:31which I love those shows
04:32I love split screen shows
04:33and time conundrum shows
04:34I can't have enough of those
04:36But it hadn't really been done
04:38on television
04:38and then Star Trek
04:39started doing it
04:40very strangely
04:41soon after
04:43Really?
04:43Yeah
04:44That's very very peculiar
04:45isn't it?
04:45It's very odd isn't it?
04:46Yeah
04:46It's one of the synchronicity
04:48It's almost as peculiar
04:49as Voyager
04:50having hard light holograms
04:52and being maroon
04:53millions of light years
04:54It's a weird one too
04:56It's almost so strange
04:57the X-Files
04:58being called
04:59the X-Files
05:00So right
05:02there's nothing
05:02There's no same at all
05:04actually
05:04No
05:04Sorry about that
05:05There is no connection
05:06No
05:07Although we did
05:08What was that series
05:09we were at the Y-Files
05:10remember that?
05:11By God sir
05:12You think that could be
05:14about those two
05:14Fully and Skwilder
05:17Yes that's right
05:19Fully and Skwilder
05:20Skwilder that's right
05:21Skwilder that's right
05:22Yeah Skwilder
05:23Skwilder come in
05:23with some torches
05:24I remember it
05:25I remember the outline
05:26And you never turn the lights on
05:27That's right
05:27Mm
