00:00Yesterday, Andrew Barry gave a press interview session where it's kind of laid back, kind of formal, whatever.
00:10They're asking serious questions. I mean, the Miles deal, we brought that up in the first hour of the show.
00:15And then, you know, he's asked questions about the quarterback.
00:18And he was asked questions about, you know, which one's going to be the starter.
00:22And I enjoyed what he had said. I thought, I didn't enjoy it, but I thought it was a pretty
00:29honest thing.
00:30When he talks about who decides the starter and who that starter is going to be.
00:33And when Andrew Barry says that Todd Munkin is going to make that decision tone, I took a little bit
00:39of heart to that.
00:39In terms of them competing for their starting job, anyone we bring in, we want to compete.
00:44But a large part of that will be, for any young player, will depend on their acclimation to the NFL
00:48and their readiness to play.
00:50And that's really done on a case-by-case basis.
00:54In terms of Ty specifically, I think you can understand we wouldn't necessarily comment on specific prospects.
01:01We have spent time with Ty. I think that's obvious and we'll continue to do so.
01:06But I think he has a bright NFL future.
01:09So, what do you take from that when he says that?
01:12Because there's other things that are being said right now about this quarterback chase that's a little bit different.
01:18But go ahead.
01:19I thought it was interesting.
01:20I thought all along they'd be bringing in like a veteran.
01:23And to hear young, that typically lends itself.
01:28Having a really young quarterback room of guys that haven't proven anything, that typically lends to like, you're one of
01:33the worst teams in football.
01:34I mean, that is what that is.
01:38So, I'm a little surprised by that.
01:40I thought all along like a Marcus Mariota could be coming here.
01:44So, that kind of threw me off.
01:45I've got to be honest.
01:46Well, here is Mike Garofalo, NFL Network, where he says he believes he knows who the leader in the clubhouse
01:53is for that starting job.
01:54Does Deshaun Watson have a chance to be the Browns starter in 2026?
01:59Yes, he does.
02:00And in my opinion, he's got a great shot.
02:02In fact, at this point, if Deshaun Watson is the starter week one for the Cleveland Browns, this guy right
02:08here is not going to be surprised.
02:09Now, it'll probably be some kind of open competition that we'll have.
02:12But you're paying him anyway.
02:13He's on the roster.
02:14He was previously an accomplished quarterback.
02:17There's been a lot that's happened off the field.
02:18I understand that.
02:19But to me, Deshaun Watson might even be in the pole position at this point to be the Browns starter
02:23for this upcoming season.
02:24Not something I wanted to hear.
02:25Audio courtesy of Good Morning Football on NFL Network.
02:28Do you care anymore about how fans feel about it?
02:32Do you care anymore?
02:33Because the question I want to ask, like, guys, it's been five years.
02:38Is it just about winning now?
02:41Is any of the other stuff?
02:42Does it matter to you?
02:43Because I think if he ends up being the starting quarterback here, then I'm going to be proven correct.
02:48Like, if it was Kevin, I'd still think that Shador Sanders would be the starting quarterback going into this year.
02:52But now that you have Todd Munkin, if he's going to make the decision and it ends up being Deshaun
02:56Watson here,
02:56I thought you might end up having more hell to pay over it a little bit.
02:59But then, you know, you hear guys like Baskin brought it up on Friday where Baskin had this to say
03:03in the middle of the day.
03:04If you can win when you return to the field, no one cares about your awfulness of three and a
03:08half years.
03:08Three and a half years.
03:09If he goes out there and wins games in the beginning of the season, no one's going to care about
03:13what happened the last three years.
03:14Please.
03:15Yes, they will.
03:16Yes, they will.
03:16Dan, let's just say Deshaun Watson, again, hypothetical.
03:21I know I'm not.
03:22I know you're going to be insane.
03:24Hypothetical.
03:24Oh, I know.
03:24We're on the hypothetical island right here.
03:26I'm aware.
03:26Watson starts the season off 4-0.
03:29Does anyone care about the last three years?
03:32No, they don't.
03:33But why am I going to let a flash in the now completely derail my future?
03:38That's the other problem with this.
03:39There's no future with Deshaun Watson.
03:41There's not zero zilch.
03:43Why would you want a future?
03:44Because if they started the season, again, hypothetical, don't.
03:48Oh, I know.
03:48We're down the hypothetical road.
03:50I understand that.
03:51I'm not.
03:51If you start the season 4-0 with him, A, people won't care about what happened in the past.
03:56B, people are going to think we're going to the Super Bowl.
04:00We're doing a lot of hypotheticals here.
04:01I completely agree with Dan because I don't think there's anybody out there who thinks
04:04that Deshaun Watson is going to be good enough to give them any sort of a future whatsoever.
04:09If you're going to start that guy, he's got to be not just decent.
04:12He's got to be damn good because your fans are not going to like that.
04:15At least that's how I feel.
04:16Maybe I'm wrong.
04:17Maybe it has been enough time.
04:18Maybe Baskin's right that if you just go out there and you win.
04:21At some point, if you're to win that much, then it's undeniable.
04:24If he turns this football team into a 12- or 13-win team, then I can't say anything to
04:29the guy.
04:29But I think a lot of people think pigs will fly before that actually happens.
04:32So he's got to be outstanding for them to start this guy week one with this fan base.
04:38Or maybe I'm sticking my head in the sand again.
04:40Look, if a serial killer came in and went 5-0 for the Browns, yeah, they'll root for him.
04:45Like, that's just a reality of how this works, but the-
04:48Got three serial killers, you'd think he'd go 5-0 for the Browns.
04:52How tall was Dahmer?
04:53How big were his hands?
04:54So here's the issue.
04:56Ken would be more well-suited to do this.
04:59It would not be John Gacy.
05:00He probably had a lot of hands to choose from.
05:02Couldn't get out of the pocket.
05:04Now, Gacy was personable.
05:06Like, he knew how to-
05:08Oh, he would have had-
05:08He could run a locker room, I think.
05:11Command of the press conference.
05:12Yep, yep.
05:12I mean, he ran chicken restaurants.
05:14This is a guy who knew how to lead people.
05:16So, it's just so hard for me to fathom a world where the guy that I saw was such a
05:21shell
05:21of himself before the injuries.
05:23This is the thing about Watson.
05:25It was not just, you can't just say the injuries derailed him.
05:28Because, obviously, he was bad.
05:31It was not looking good.
05:32Save for that second half against the Baltimore Ravens.
05:35It wasn't looking good.
05:36Like, the mechanics were off.
05:38He looked like he was lost upstairs.
05:40It was not pretty.
05:41He looked like nothing like the guy that I wanted, that I advocated for.
05:46This is why I'm so surprised that Garofalo said what he said.
05:49And maybe I shouldn't be.
05:50But it's like, man, Shador has to go out there and just be abominable to me in OTAs for Deshaun
05:57Watson to win this job.
05:59He's got to be so behind and so bad.
06:03And to me, it would end the conversation.
06:05But are you talking as a Browns fan or as Todd Munkin?
06:08Because I think those are two totally different things, man.
06:11Well, Todd Munkin is...
06:11Todd's coming in clear-headed on this, right?
06:14Yeah, and obviously, you know, I brought this up before.
06:16It's kind of silly, the small sample size.
06:19But he saw Deshaun Watson in that second half.
06:22He also saw that game where it sucked for Shador, but he was brought into a terrible spot.
06:28And Shador looked like he didn't belong in the NFL.
06:30Now, we all understand why.
06:31It wasn't like he was adequately prepared for that moment.
06:34But that could be something that's ingrained in Munkin's mind.
06:37He saw it.
06:38He was there on the sidelines.
06:39So it's been, as they said, three and a half years.
06:42Let me just ask anybody.
06:43Is it just about winning now to you?
06:442-1-6-4-7-4-0-0-92.
06:46Like, if Deshaun Watson were...
06:48I kind of want to know.
06:49Like, if Deshaun Watson were to start, would you, like, not go to the games?
06:52Would you, like, not want to watch if Deshaun Watson were to start for the Cleveland Browns?
06:56Like, I have to watch.
06:57There would be a curiosity to see whether or not he could actually tune it back up again.
07:02But I don't think that there would be.
07:04And I think every game that he plays in that they lose, people would look at it and go,
07:08well, we could have saw what we had with Shador.
07:11We could have saw what we had with somebody else.
07:13Maybe another young QB who they might bring in.
07:15Who the hell knows?
07:16Like, I think they look at it as a missed opportunity because they don't think the team's going to be
07:19very good.
07:20And if the team's not...
07:21The team has to be so good with Deshaun Watson.
07:24And it's got to be undeniable because I don't think fans like him.
07:28I don't think he actually likes it here.
07:29I've said that a bunch of million times.
07:31And I don't think they want to see him start week one.
07:33I think they'd rather see Shador Sanders.
07:34I think there might be some fans out there who'd like to see neither of them.
07:37But you have what you have.
07:39And so if you're making a choice on one of the two guys,
07:44I think that 90% of Browns fans, maybe 80,
07:48I think they'd rather see Shador over Deshaun Watson.
07:52I don't think it's much of a choice to a lot of Browns fans.
07:54Maybe I'm wrong.
07:55Maybe they just want to see him win now.
07:56No, you're not wrong.
07:56No, I think what they're most nervous about is that he wins just enough.
08:01Like, it'd be one thing if, you know, it was the 2019 Deshaun Watson all over again.
08:07That's different.
08:08I mean, that's a guy that can help you win a Super Bowl with this defense.
08:10But nobody thinks that's happening.
08:13And if he's just average, no, fans do not.
08:17Because part of it is it's not just that Deshaun Watson, you know,
08:22like the allegations were pretty much done.
08:25The settlements have been reached.
08:27That, okay, for him, that part of his story he's trying to put behind him.
08:33It's that he has not done an adequate job of showing either remorse
08:37or connecting with Cleveland fans.
08:39He's done none of that.
08:40But he's done none of that.
08:41He's barely been in Cleveland.
08:42This is interesting to me because you wanted him.
08:45You know, years ago you wanted him.
08:46We would have, I mean, red-faced, vain-popping-out arguments over this guy.
08:51And I'm getting a different tone out of you.
08:53Like, you used to be like, Kenny, don't tell me about it.
08:56Just tell me how good a football player he is.
08:58And at that time it was really undeniable how good of a football player he is.
09:01Now that we have more evidence, you know, I got to tell you,
09:04I'll give you as much credit as I can in a segment that I really don't want to,
09:09where you do think about the temperature of the fan base
09:12because you have come around to think that he is not going to be very good this year.
09:15I can sense it in you.
09:16I think you're ready to move on from him as soon as we possibly can.
09:20Am I wrong by saying that about Deshaun Watson?
09:22Yes.
09:22Yeah, last year.
09:24I mean, this...
09:25So wouldn't you be upset if he started week one?
09:27Yeah, yeah.
09:28But then again, if he starts playing well, I mean, we're in it to talk about Browns football
09:32and how good they are.
09:33I don't think they think he's going to win.
09:35I think Deshaun Watson reminds them of failure.
09:39That's why I think fans do not want him out there.
09:41It's not just, like, listen, all the other things that's been taken care of in the courts,
09:51things that we did not like discussing for a long period of time.
09:54I think there might be a little bit of a reminder of all that,
09:57the uncomfortable conversations that we had to have,
09:59but there's also where, I mean, you look at what this franchise has been.
10:03They've only been competitive when he hasn't played.
10:06The only time they were competitive, he wasn't the quarterback.
10:09And so I think a lot of folks just look at him as like, man, like,
10:13Shador, does he have it?
10:14Does he not?
10:15A lot of people are probably leaning towards probably not.
10:18Okay?
10:19But I think a lot of people are looking at the other guy going,
10:22he's just a reminder of failure.
10:24He's just a reminder of what could have been had we not freaked out
10:29because the conversations that we would be having had they not traded for him
10:34are still better than the conversations we're having now.
10:37Like, I don't think it would.
10:38I can't say it would have been AFC championship game every single year.
10:41I bet it would be a hell of a lot more competitive than what it's been,
10:44and those would still be healthier conversations
10:46than the conversations we've had over the last three and a half years.
10:49So I think a lot of fans feel that way, and he better be amazing.
10:53Shador better be absolute garbage if that guy's going to play week one
10:56because I don't think anybody wants to see that guy.
10:58And I don't think anybody could possibly forecast him being amazing.
11:02No.
11:02No.
11:04He's looked like one of the worst quarterbacks in the league when he's playing.
11:07Yeah.
11:08And some of that was before the injuries.
11:10In his corner.
11:12I'm going to get to these calls here in a second because I want to know.
11:14Do you care if Watson starts the season?
11:16I mean, Mike Garofalo.
11:18We're going to have Matt Derry coming on at 8 o'clock.
11:19We'll talk Guardians with him, obviously.
11:21Derry Brothers Guardians cast.
11:22But Mike Garofalo, NFL Network, says on Good Morning Football
11:26that Deshaun Watson would be the leader in the clubhouse, right,
11:28to be the starting quarterback for 2026.
11:30When he says that, a lot of people's hearts sink.
11:33Why?
11:33Because they at least want something to look forward to,
11:37not a reminder of how bad things have been.
11:39And that's what Deshaun Watson represents to those folks.
11:41And I'm hearing it in your voice.
11:42You even feel the same way.
11:44And it has not been this way in your life.
11:47So even if I got a guy who likes to be right, who loves the sport,
11:53debate is a sport to you.
11:55And a guy like you, willing to lay his sword down going,
11:58yeah, this ain't going to work.
12:00Fine.
12:00I think it says everything that we need to know going,
12:03man, they better make,
12:05Shunor might as well have his arms fall off if he's not going to start week one.
12:09Because I don't think a lot of fans are going to want to see the other guy at all.
12:12At least there's a decent curiosity.
12:15Yeah, the only thing I have,
12:16I do have a morbid curiosity as to how somebody could go from,
12:21you know, top five, top seven quarterback,
12:24depending on what list you had for a sustained amount of time.
12:28And it came crashing down to that level.
12:32And we haven't really heard a why.
12:34We haven't had anybody been able to adequately, like, go through,
12:38maybe it's the film or, like, the mechanics.
12:42How someone could go from so talented while they're still in,
12:45they were, quote, their athletic prime,
12:47at least in terms of their years and everything.
12:49We've just never seen anything like it.
12:51I can't find any kind of comparison.
12:56I wish I could tell you.
12:58I mean, honestly, no, because that guy came back and he won a major,
13:01so I can't even say him.
13:02All right, here's Andrew Barry on the issue.
13:04Go ahead.
13:05Nobody has touched the grass.
13:07Nobody has really worked with our coaching staff.
13:09Everyone in that room deserves opportunity.
13:11And so we'll certainly know a lot more as we get to the spring.
13:15We'll know even more as we get to camp.
13:16We wouldn't be doing the right thing for the team.
13:18We wouldn't be doing the right thing for that position, you know,
13:21if we didn't go in with it, eyes wouldn't.
13:23I understand that they have to have their eyes open to it,
13:25but, man, I think they have to be squinting a little bit
13:28if they're considering to play Deshaun Watson week one.
