00:00Well, here we go.
00:03Daryl Ryder is in for Kenny.
00:05We've got Andrew Barry today at 9.
00:08How are we going to fill time until 9 if everything I want to know is not going to be
00:13found out until that point?
00:15What do I talk about beforehand?
00:17Is it my questions for Andrew Barry?
00:20Sure, I think we can just recklessly speculate for two hours at least.
00:25Oh, I got questions, ladies and gentlemen.
00:27I've got questions in my hand.
00:30I cannot wait.
00:31Oh, wait, that's coming in hot.
00:34I've got questions in my hand.
00:36You don't want to confuse those.
00:38You think Andrew Barry would participate in coming in hot?
00:40Of course.
00:41He's been doing podcasts.
00:42He's been everywhere.
00:44Meanwhile, Todd Munkin lost his voice.
00:47I was told erroneously he had lost his voice from screaming at Shador at the start of Wednesday's practice.
00:56Daryl, you were there.
00:58Is it not that he's actually sick?
01:00He is sick, but can confirm that he does spend a lot of time in practice cussing guys out.
01:07Who has been the target so far?
01:09And I know you guys are not necessarily right next to the action on every play.
01:14It's hard to miss.
01:15I don't think you need to target him, Daryl, but you do need to paraphrase him.
01:20Who are those Tom three cusser outer receivers?
01:23Who's gotten the brunt of most of Todd Munkin's voice, which now is gone for the next five weeks?
01:30Number three, the wide receivers.
01:32As a collective.
01:33As a collective.
01:35Former wide receivers coach getting in those guys' grill.
01:38Okay.
01:38Number two, Deshaun Watson.
01:43Okay.
01:43Good.
01:44Coach him up.
01:45Coaching him up.
01:46And number one, Shador Sanders.
01:49Wow.
01:50Speculate.
01:512-1-6-4-7-4-0-0-92.
01:53If he's yelling at Shador Moore, does that mean Shador isn't getting the job done?
02:01Is it second place in this competition?
02:02Or do you bark at the one you think?
02:08See, investing more time into it.
02:10See, Owen's a coach.
02:11Yeah.
02:12Owen's a coach right there.
02:13I always thought you went after the one that you wanted to invest more time in, that you
02:19thought had more of a chance, more of a ceiling.
02:21Or maybe Shador's just messing up more than the other ones.
02:24Well, that's part of it, too.
02:25I've always had the theory that I only yell at the ones that I care about, right?
02:29So, Dylan.
02:30Sorry.
02:31So, Dylan, guess who was not power ranked?
02:34Does that mean...
02:35Does he know he's on the team?
02:38Coach hasn't said boo to a goose?
02:40I will say, I think...
02:41Well, Ken Carman?
02:42Yeah.
02:43I think Dylan Gabriel lost two inches wearing number six.
02:46I'm not going to sit here for the cheap shots.
02:49I'm not.
02:49The poor kid came in here with hope and ambition.
02:53And all you guys have done is attack his size, his girlfriend.
02:57And quite frankly, I think you're above that.
02:59You should be above that.
03:00I have never attacked his girlfriend, and no, I'm not above that.
03:04Well, Dylan, you're supposed to be playing it by the books here.
03:07You're supposed to be an independent observer, almost like a juror in a matter like this.
03:13I mean, we are sitting here...
03:14He stinks.
03:15Who?
03:16Which one?
03:16Wow.
03:17Dylan.
03:18Which QB?
03:19Well, can I just go all three of them?
03:21Get the power rake music going again.
03:23All right.
03:24I don't know if Taylor Greed is going to make the cut, but three QBs, you seem to think they
03:28all stink.
03:29Go ahead, Daryl.
03:30I'll rank them.
03:32Number three, Deshaun Watson.
03:36He's the least stinky or most stinky?
03:38The least stinky.
03:39Okay.
03:39The stinkiest is numero uno.
03:42Number two, Shador Sanders.
03:44Is he going to do this for Andrew Barry?
03:45And number one, Dylan Gabriel.
03:48I mean, Andrew Barry is responsible for these guys being here.
03:51Some say Kevin Stefanski on at least one of those quarterbacks.
03:54But, Daryl, I want Andrew to actually call into the show at 9 o'clock.
03:59I want this to be appointment listening and appointment viewing for our listeners.
04:04I mean, anything you say over the next three hours.
04:07Will be used against me in a court of law.
04:09Well, it could dissuade him.
04:10He might not want to be a part of this.
04:11He thought if he's walking into the hot seat like this, I had some nice questions.
04:17Again, that's coming in hot.
04:18I had some nice questions that I thought were going to be good icebreakers.
04:23Like, when I see Andrew Barry at Healthy Kids Running Series, and we've been able to banter about our kids
04:29and their gait.
04:30I thought that would be fun.
04:32No.
04:32Interesting.
04:32No.
04:33Daryl's going to, which of your quarterbacks stinks the least?
04:36I mean, again, that's coming in hot.
04:38This is Andrew Barry's question.
04:41Don't screw that up, Daryl.
04:43Anyway.
04:43His young receivers look really good.
04:44How about that?
04:45How about that to butter things up?
04:47And you said he's been yelling at him a lot.
04:49So, that's good.
04:50Coaching him up.
04:522-1-6-4-7-4-0-0-92.
04:55We were told that Todd Munkin wanted to have this thing ironed out before the break.
05:03Before we get into real training camp.
05:05That hasn't happened.
05:07Is that disappointing to coach?
05:11Oh, I don't see it that way.
05:12It would be if I didn't think either one of them were capable of starting.
05:16I mean, it would feel different if I didn't feel like their progression hadn't gotten to this point where I
05:24think they both can start and play winning football.
05:26I'm convinced of it.
05:28And I'd say it if I didn't.
05:31I mean, I can't decide now because I think both have earned the opportunity to continue to compete once we
05:38put the pads on.
05:39It's hard to really say.
05:40It's hard to say.
05:42And, you know, I mean, whether it would have been a legit pressure, it wouldn't have been, would he have
05:47had all that time, I don't know.
05:50There's still a lot to see.
05:53Quarterbacks and the O-line, especially once we put the pads on.
05:57Daryl, you have been front and center with coach every single day, although yesterday you were back and to the
06:05left because you're worried about contracting something from coach?
06:08I just got over mine.
06:10I was out hard for about four weeks.
06:14So you were a little nervous yesterday.
06:16Yeah.
06:16Yeah, I did not want that back.
06:18You didn't want to be down.
06:20I did not want to spend my summer vacation laying in bed ill.
06:29So you're afraid of the coach yesterday.
06:30But he played hurt yesterday.
06:31I give Todd a lot of credit.
06:33He played hurt, got through that press conference.
06:36I think he had a whole bag of lozenges to get through it.
06:39I could hear the lozenge.
06:41But, man, yeah, it's a little, for me, it's really disappointing that he can't pick a quarterback.
06:48I'm going to put that through a coaching translator.
06:50Neither one of these guys has distinguished themselves enough to earn the job yet.
06:54That's what this whole thing comes down to.
06:56This isn't about them.
06:57Of course he's going to come out and say, well, they both have earned that right to compete.
07:01They both have been doing some excellent things during the offseason program.
07:04And we want to give them an equal opportunity come training camp, put the pads on.
07:09Then we'll really see what was a pressure, what would have been a sack or under duress or, you know,
07:16hitting the receivers in stride.
07:17They're all, that's all well and good.
07:18That's all coach speak.
07:19What this all boils down to very simply is neither one of these guys are at a level where they're
07:29going to lead the Browns to wins this fall.
07:33They're wildly inconsistent.
07:35One day Deshaun Watson looks good.
07:37Mostly when there's no defense on the field.
07:39That's the good news.
07:39The bad news is football's played with the defense on the field.
07:42Shador Sanders has.
07:43I think 11 guys this year.
07:45Yes, I do believe 11 guys are allowed to win.
07:47Has the commission committee settled on?
07:48So, Shador Sanders, same thing.
07:50Like, he has stretches where it looks incredible.
07:53But then you get the stretches where wide receivers are missed by five yards.
07:57And you're like, oof.
07:59I mean, so when you have the inconsistency that you have, how can you pick either one of these guys?
08:05I don't think you have any other choice but to go into training camp with yet another quarterback battle or
08:13competition or whatever it is you want to call it.
08:16But, yeah, there's no consistency practice to practice with these quarterbacks.
08:21You can't pick a guy right now.
08:22I totally get where Todd Munkin's coming from.
08:24And he can't get up there and say, yeah, these guys all stink.
08:26And I'm having a hard time picking the best of the worst.
08:29All right, so young John, if you were driving in this morning and you were listening to young John, who
08:36I believe is getting closer to the probationary period.
08:39John produces the show.
08:41And he was in for Jeff Thomas today doing the warm-up show.
08:44John, you did extensive prep while you were running those press conferences on your warm-up show, the press conference
08:50show.
08:50John, are you there?
08:51Yeah, I'm here.
08:52Okay, so you have some examples of when these quarterback competitions in recent years have been fully fleshed out.
09:01What were those dates?
09:03So they were all towards the mid-August.
09:06Even going back to, I think the most famous one is 2024 with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields with the
09:11Steelers.
09:11That wasn't decided until August 28th.
09:15That's the best one.
09:17Those are the two, if I'm looking at the most recent ones, other than Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield with
09:21the Panthers.
09:22That was August 22nd of 2022, by the way.
09:24You're looking at all these guys.
09:26Those two are the most high-profile quarterback controversies.
09:29Why are we so in a hurry to name a quarterback now?
09:33So I'm not.
09:34Yeah, it would have been awesome had somebody come in and just wowed the socks off of Todd Munkin.
09:41Owen, you seem.
09:42Well, I don't think that any of us are in a hurry to name the quarterback.
09:47The coach came out and said he wanted to name the quarterback.
09:49Had he not said that, I don't think anybody would have thought before August it would even be a deal.
09:55Remember everything you say will and can and will be used against you?
09:58That is the perfect example.
10:00Yeah, look, I'm not going to crush him.
10:02When he said it at the time, I was like, boy.
10:03Well, it's crushing time, man.
10:04We have five weeks of crushing.
10:06Well, I think here's what happened.
10:06When he said that, you remember Mary Kay had that first report.
10:13And I talked to Mary Kay.
10:15I talked to Mary Kay behind the scenes about that report.
10:18It was not something out of thin air.
10:20When she said that Deshaun Watson looked to be in the lead, you know, I think a lot of people
10:29had heard Todd say what he said and wondered, was this thing preordained?
10:33Was it engineered ahead of time?
10:36But it does seem like there has been ample back and forth, ample splitting of the rafts.
10:42Darrell, you're there every day.
10:44Shador has absolutely been given a chance.
10:46And now, has he run with it?
10:49Your four eyes have been there every day.
10:52I mean, what do you think?
10:53Or has Deshaun taken a step back?
10:57Or do you think it's great competition, like the coaches said, where I got two starters on this, two NFL
11:02-quality caliber starters on this team?
11:04He doesn't have two NFL-caliber starters on this team.
11:08I think if you put Shador Sanders and Deshaun Watson and Dylan Gabriel into a blender, maybe you get one.
11:15Oh, come on.
11:16But what's he supposed to say?
11:18Give him a chance.
11:19Now we're blending them?
11:21What's he supposed to say?
11:22Digital bullet?
11:22You know, Deshaun is healthy, so that's a positive for Deshaun.
11:30Yeah, I'd say so.
11:31I don't know if it's a positive for the Browns, but it's a positive for Deshaun.
11:36My preference is to just let Shador start this thing.
11:41But I think when the dust settles, your week one starter will be Deshaun Watson.
11:45And he will be given a little bit of a leash to get as deep into the season as humanly
11:51possible.
11:51If he plays well, he keeps the job.
11:52If he doesn't, they'll make a change.
11:54You're going to see both of these quarterbacks this year.
11:57Like, book it.
11:58You will see Deshaun Watson and Shador Sanders start.
12:01That is unless they trade Shador.
12:04But...
12:04Trade Shador?
12:06Why'd you throw that in?
12:08Boy, that came out of nowhere.
12:09That came unprovoked.
12:10Hey, if you can trade Miles Garrett, you can trade Shador Sanders, okay?
12:14That's where I'm at right now.
12:15But, Daryl, I mean, Miles Garrett, you were going to get a haul for.
12:21We knew he wanted to be on a contender.
12:23Never underestimate the power of another 6th or 7th round draft pick.
12:27Well, wait a second.
12:28Where does this come from Shador?
12:30Because, I mean, I know some of his fans, if he doesn't get the starting job, will want him out.
12:35That's the only way he's not going to start this year is if they trade him.
12:38That's the only way he won't start this year.
12:40It's if he's not on the team.
12:41We'll see you next time.
