00:00We're a couple weeks away from training camp,
00:02but I want to get to the Badone sound in a minute.
00:05But you and I have had this kind of as an aside,
00:08not necessarily the main conversation.
00:10There were several points this offseason where,
00:13when we did the Shador versus Deshaun,
00:15people said, I don't care about this conversation.
00:19I checked out.
00:20In a way that I don't remember people checking out
00:23in the quarterback conversation.
00:24Last year, that was me with Flacco versus Pickett
00:28versus Shador versus Dylan Gabriel.
00:30I didn't like the way it was handled.
00:31I thought it was an asinine way that they tried to do it.
00:34But you still have things to care about and yell about
00:36because they were handling it in such a unique way.
00:38And by the way, I think this idea of bringing back
00:41Deshaun Watson for a fifth season is also asinine,
00:44but at least I can get behind the idea of Shador Sanders.
00:48But do you think by the time we get to camp,
00:51not all, but a fair amount of those people
00:53who bitched about this story and the topics that came with it
00:56will come around and get into the quarterback battle?
01:00I think they will.
01:00I think everybody ultimately will.
01:02I am curious how the other stories land, though.
01:05Like, I feel like, I don't know why.
01:07The past, earlier today,
01:09Baskin Phelps won an offensive line tangent.
01:11And it was just like,
01:12and I've seen a couple other spots, too.
01:13They just go in these weird offensive line discussions.
01:16They're not weird.
01:17They're going to be had.
01:18But it's the offensive line.
01:19Well, so we've spent in the past,
01:20we've spent months legitimately when you get to training camp
01:24talking about kicker controversies.
01:25You know, you get into some really weird parts of the team.
01:29And I'm dying to find out which parts grab people.
01:32And I think the early hold, oddly enough,
01:34is going to be wide receivers and offensive line.
01:36I think that's just where people stick.
01:38So to answer your question,
01:39I think people will care about the quarterback controversy.
01:42I don't know that it'll be the wall-to-wall treatment
01:44like we think it should be
01:46and the way I think it should be.
01:47So I think the offensive line, it's a yes or no.
01:50Like so many other questions on this offense,
01:53but at least like, I think people can go,
01:56well, if Denzel isn't a breakout player,
01:58well, maybe Isaiah Bond can, right?
02:00And they'll break out in ways you can visualize very quickly.
02:04Like you can close your eyes and say,
02:06oh, Isaiah Bond running down the field
02:08and getting wide open and going for 50 yards for a touchdown.
02:11It's really tough for people to visualize the offensive line
02:15because it's the offensive line.
02:16I know, but there's so many new pieces, though,
02:18and I think that's the intrigue about it, right?
02:20We're all trying to find, at this point of the season,
02:21we're trying to find what's new, what will stick,
02:24and what the Browns can actually rely on,
02:26and I think that's interesting to see.
02:27So the reason why I think the offensive line is a yes or no
02:30and why it just doesn't grab people is,
02:34quite frankly, I think they brought in enough people.
02:37Now it's just, can a guy's ball?
02:39Can they stay healthy and can they gel together?
02:42So that's where I say it's a yes or no.
02:44Again, if I'm programming it, it's not my top story.
02:47But I feel like there's been this weird push in the past,
02:49I don't know, again, 24 hours, whatever it's been,
02:52where people, they want it, like, I can hear them shaping it already.
02:56Between that, now wide receivers would be a top story for me in many ways.
02:59But yeah, the quarterback stuff is going to reach people.
03:01It's just, we're at an interesting spot.
03:04There's enough people like me and you that hate Deshaun Watson
03:06as a football player and hate what his play stands for, essentially.
03:12Way too injured and not good enough when he does play,
03:15everything that comes with that.
03:16And there's, on the other side of that, enough people
03:19that anytime you bring up Shador Sanders,
03:21they get incredibly bothered by.
03:23And so, you know, we always tell people,
03:25if you don't like it, don't watch.
03:27If you don't like it, don't do that.
03:28And I wonder if people would just start taking that advice.
03:30You worked with, oh, you didn't end up working with Fedor, right?
03:34What do you mean?
03:34When he was here, or sorry, when I was off that Monday,
03:38he ended up not being in, right?
03:39No, no, no, yeah, he didn't come.
03:41He was supposed to be that Monday and then he wasn't.
03:42That worked out for the better.
03:43I don't know if you saw the clip of Fedor.
03:45Oh, I saw the clip.
03:46Not only did I see the clip, I had like 27 things
03:49I was ready to just yell at him about on Monday.
03:51Oh.
03:51And I got the text on Sunday night, like, can't make it.
03:54And part of me wondered, now he had real things that popped up,
03:56but part of me wondered if he was like,
03:57yeah, Nick yelled at me for two days straight, I'm good here.
04:00No, I don't think that's it.
04:01I don't want Jonathan to come in and yell at me for a day
04:04and do the same thing.
04:05Fedor's closer to you and me that I think he likes it.
04:07I know, I think he does too.
04:08Like, on some level he enjoys.
04:10I think he does too.
04:11The screaming at each other side of things.
04:14Yeah, it is interesting, the idea that no matter
04:17who wins the starting quarterback job,
04:20there's going to be...
04:20Fedor said he'd rather poke his eyeballs out.
04:21That was the line.
04:22And that's my point is...
04:23Rather poke his eyeballs out than watch Fedor play football.
04:25If you want to have strong feelings on Fedor or Deshawn,
04:30that's fine.
04:31That felt like a tad bit of hyperbole.
04:34That was my main rebuttal.
04:36You don't say.
04:37That's a little heavy.
04:38Like, I get that.
04:39Honestly, if that was your...
04:40Next show, you should have brought something to poke his eyeballs out
04:42and been like, it'll sit here and wait for you.
04:44That's true.
04:44We can play this saw game.
04:46Hey, you don't have to go far.
04:47You just reach in the cup and get some pair of scissors.
04:50What do you got here?
04:50Yeah, look at that.
04:51This is a thing that if you wanted to, you could stab your eye out with it.
04:54You could put your eye out with this thing, as parents used to say.
04:57A lot of things that apparently take an eyeball out.
04:59Yeah.
05:00Nick Badone on with Daryl Ryder on the Sunday show.
05:03This I don't think is hyperbole.
05:04This is...
05:04I mean, I...
05:06Listen.
05:07Play the clip and then we can talk about it.
05:08All right.
05:08Well, thank you.
05:09Sorry.
05:09For your permission.
05:10Sorry.
05:10Here's Badone yesterday talking about the thing he would rather do.
05:15Sorry.
05:17Yeah, just play the damn sound.
05:18In the past, I would sit here and I would get all red-faced and I would match my hand
05:23on the table here and I would yell and scream that they can't start that guy.
05:28They can't put that guy on the field.
05:30If they do, I won't be...
05:32I don't even have to say that anymore.
05:34Okay?
05:34If they start Deshaun Watson week one, I've already got it lined up with Jimmy Hamlin.
05:39I'm going to get really good at golf and I'm going to give myself until about week
05:43three because at that point I'd expect that either Deshaun Watson will be hurt or
05:48he'll be so laughably bad that it'll be time for Shador Sanders.
05:53Okay.
05:54One, I don't think we need to name drop Jimmy Hamlin there, although I don't hate it.
05:59Two, I don't believe him.
06:01That's the point.
06:02I don't believe him either.
06:03But this is not hyperbole.
06:05This is something he could theoretically pull off.
06:08It's just as a working media member that covers the Browns, could you possibly have any
06:13decision that would make you just not watch the games?
06:16I think that's impossible.
06:16No, nor is it, and I, you know, every once in a while, if we're critical of a player,
06:21somebody will say, you're rooting against them, right?
06:24Like Lima will say that if you don't just kiss the Cavs' ass because you're, I guess he's
06:29on the payroll now or something like that.
06:32That was just the shots fired for the shots fired.
06:33That was unnecessary.
06:34But I think there are people who will root against the Browns if the quarterback they
06:41don't want starts.
06:43I just have never been built like that.
06:45I like, I, you know, it was tough enough when we, in the, you know, my, or what mid, no,
06:50no, no, right around the time I turned 30, when I had to root for them to be aggressively
06:54bad.
06:55So they might be able to take a good quarterback.
06:56That was tough enough, like rooting for them to stink because it might mean Deshaun is
07:02bad.
07:02No, I don't know how you do that.
07:04Well, but this is a different level though.
07:06This isn't a hate watching, right?
07:07And I feel like for a lot of people, if Deshaun is named it, they'll hate watch.
07:11This is, this is, I'm just going to ignore you completely.
07:14Yeah.
07:14Well, while also having a job that revolves around, he'll be on the pregame shows like
07:18Padone is going to be on the pregame shows.
07:20Is he going to do like the three hours of pregame lead up to the, not watch the games.
07:24It just seems like a payoff that isn't worth it.
07:27Like one, one great thing in like week 14, for instance, if the team sucks and they've
07:31won eight games in the previous two years, when you do the pregame shows, they get you
07:34really, really excited no matter what's going to actually happen because you've just invested
07:39so much time into it.
07:41How do you not get the payoff when you invest that much time?
07:44Also, every time, uh, uh, Padone goes to talk on the station about his thoughts on the
07:49Browns and somebody is like, you watched Deshaun.
07:52He's going to actually, I didn't.
07:53He'll be like, no, miss, miss that one completely.
07:55Was he, was he really that bad?
07:56Was he not that bad?
07:57Yeah.
07:57Like it's like, I don't, I think when you look at the Browns, what if he stays the quarterback?
08:03Mean Deshaun?
08:04Yeah.
08:04What if Deshaun by all, like Padone, by all miracle, you know, Padone, get up off that
08:09bench.
08:10He stays the quarterback?
08:10We need you.
08:11Yeah.
08:11Uh, what if by some miracle Deshaun ends up playing like 13 games this year?
08:17He's not going to watch all 13?
08:19Yeah.
08:19Not a chance.
08:19And by the way, you're not getting really good at golf in 13 games anyway, but you can go as
08:23much
08:23golfing with Jimmy Hanlon on Sundays.
08:24You don't play enough to get really good anyway.
08:26Also, it's going to get cold in there.
08:29Well, that's another good point.
08:30That's a good point.
08:31Like by October, good luck getting out there and swinging the clubs.
08:34It, once it gets below a certain, uh, once it gets about 45 or below, swinging golf club
08:39actually hurts to hit a golf ball.
08:41I'm always 50, 50 or below is when I kind of cut it off.
08:44But like, I, I just, I don't, I imagine where you'd be if you actually had some scruples
08:47on this.
08:48You know what?
08:48Uh, I, I just don't buy this line of thinking.
08:52And also I just either quarterback, it just, I, it just, I don't buy the people that say
08:57they're going to skip out and I'll see you next year in 2027.
08:59I don't, now listen, that's not how we're built, but I know week 12, 13, 14, I'll listen
09:04to those convos because that does happen for fans.
09:06I've been here long enough.
09:07Now I've seen it, uh, late enough in the season where enough people just do not care and they're
09:11done with it.
09:12But to have, I don't know the idea that you're just going to skip it all.
09:16It just doesn't make sense to me.
09:17216-474-0092.
09:19Padone says he'll golf if Deshaun is the starter.
09:22Don't you want to see the other players too?
09:24Isn't that the other side of this, Nick?
09:25Well, no, he's just, he, what, maybe what he'll do is he'll just put his hand
09:29over the screen where Deshaun is and then just watch the other tag.
09:33Is he going to have his wife be like, uh, Hey, no defense is on the field.
09:36Now Schlesinger's playing.
09:37You're good.
09:38Ooh.
09:38Read the scouting report.
09:39I don't hate it.
09:41I hate it.
09:41So you can watch other football games.
09:43If you're going to boycott the Browns, why don't you just watch other football games?
09:45Here's the other thing.
09:47I disagree with Frank to the idea that it's set in stone.
09:50And I also disagree that the Browns have flexibility with Shador.
09:54Let's, let's all, you don't have to like Shador to understand this.
09:57The best thing for the Browns is Shador, the rookie on a controllable contract who they
10:03drafted last year in the fifth round doesn't just play, but plays really well.
10:07And he does so by taking the job in training camp.
10:11Cause that means he won the respect of the guys around him and Todd Munkin.
10:15And then in playing well means you kind of get to go ahead and exist in this ecosystem
10:20with a rookie on a rookie contract for the next couple of years, which is good for business.
10:24Meanwhile, the best argument, someone that has for wanting to start to Sean first is they
10:28feel like it'll help Shador second.
10:30If he goes and the time.
10:31And I, I've refuted that one for months now.
10:33I think that's an asinine take.
10:35It makes no sense.
10:36You want to play all 17.
10:37If you're going to be the starting quarterback, Shador wants to play all 17 and have a real
10:41shot at it.
