00:00Welcome back to Baskin and Phelps.
00:02We go to the Wise Heart Right, We Make It Right call, Kyle Wright Hotline.
00:06This gentleman covers the Browns for the Chronicle Telegram.
00:09You can read all of his work at brownzone.com.
00:12He has an analysis out there.
00:14Deshaun Watson hears the cheers, feels the love as he leads winning touchdown drive.
00:19Who'd have thunk it?
00:21It's Mr. Scott Petrack.
00:22Hello, Scott.
00:23What's going on, guys?
00:25How about that, by the way?
00:27Cheers?
00:28There were actually cheers for Deshaun Watson.
00:33Yeah, I guess that's what happens.
00:35Not a guess.
00:36That is what happens when you throw a touchdown pass in the last couple of minutes,
00:41win a game, win the home opener, win two in a row, play pretty well in the fourth quarter.
00:47That's going to happen, right?
00:49Now, if that interception hadn't been overturned by the roughing the passer,
00:53we probably would have heard a different reaction from that same group of fans.
00:57But they got the win, and that's what is remembered in this league.
01:04What a difference a month makes, right?
01:06You think about that last time we were sitting in the press room after the game,
01:09and you got that press conference, and then it's all smiles and cheers and everybody's happy.
01:17As you see Deshaun, one, do you see Deshaun developing here?
01:21And then two, if he is, what is it?
01:24Why is he a better quarterback today than he was a month ago?
01:30That's a good question.
01:31I mean, I see development, certainly.
01:34I think the biggest key has been his willingness and ability to use his legs.
01:43And he says, once he came back from the Achilles, and I asked him last week,
01:47and he said, even last year, when he was back from the Achilles and practicing,
01:50he felt good, and he felt like he'd be able to move like he needed to move.
01:54I always felt that there was a hesitancy there, and I think that's natural given the two Achilles ruptures,
02:02given the shoulder injury he had, the injuries he's had, the time he's missed.
02:07I think you would be a little bit reluctant to put your body at risk
02:12and run as much as he's been running in these first three weeks.
02:16I think at some point, he came to the realization that I need to do that if I'm going to
02:20be as successful
02:21as I need to be for this offense to be as successful as it needs to be.
02:26And to me, that was the difference in the game yesterday, was his ability to pick up first downs, scrambling.
02:32We saw it at the end of the Tampa Bay game, the end of that win.
02:36He ran twice for first downs on the winning touchdown drive.
02:41Yesterday, he had a 21-yard scramble on the winning touchdown drive,
02:43then gets out of the pocket on the plate of Fannin, which allows Fannin to run his scramble drill
02:49and get open in the end zone.
02:51Because to me, Watson is still not where he needs to be from inside the pocket.
02:56I don't think he looks completely comfortable there.
03:00Obviously, his numbers weren't great yesterday, right?
03:03But he made plays off schedule, which allows him to be effective
03:10and then allows him, if the game's close in the fourth quarter, to make a couple of plays
03:15and pull out a win like he has the last two weeks.
03:17So I think that's where you see him being most effective.
03:21I think he still needs to get better inside the pocket.
03:23I think the hope would be that that happens with more time with Todd Munkin's scheme,
03:28more time with the first-team offense, develop that chemistry with the rest of those receivers.
03:35So, you know, I thought he was better last week than he was yesterday,
03:40but he's still able to make the big plays at the end.
03:43After week one, we're all thinking, well, can they get the number one pick all by themselves?
03:49Now you've won two games, good defense, competent quarterback play.
03:55And I think the most important thing for Deshaun, Scott, and tell me if you disagree with this,
04:00because the Achilles doesn't look to be problematic, and the shoulder doesn't look to be problematic either.
04:06And I sit here and think, okay, if he's healthy and he continues to knock off rust,
04:13what might this look like in three or four more weeks?
04:17Yeah, I think staying healthy is obviously key,
04:20and we haven't seen him do it for a whole season since he's been in Cleveland.
04:23So I think that continues to be in the back of my mind.
04:26Even though he says he's healthy, I get it.
04:28But stuff happens in this league.
04:30You get hit a lot, stuff can happen.
04:33So he needs to stay healthy.
04:35The next thing is, you know, he didn't turn it over against Tampa Bay,
04:40didn't turn it over yesterday, but he threw like four balls that could have been intercepted.
04:46So I think he has to be more careful there.
04:51Any one of those can turn the game.
04:53You know, one of them could have been a pick six early that the Carolina guy just dropped.
04:57So I think he needs to be, again, more decisive inside the pocket, better decisions consistently.
05:07You know, yesterday it felt like first read wasn't there.
05:10He would take off.
05:11And I think part of that was Carolina.
05:13I think Carolina had a good scheme.
05:14They're taking away some of the things that Browns wanted to do quick, which is tough if you're a quarterback.
05:19You got to get to that second read and then you take off.
05:21And that is part of his game.
05:23So I think there's plenty of room for Watson to grow.
05:26But I think the two keys would be staying healthy and then being more decisive in better decisions inside the
05:35pocket.
05:35I think he's been really good outside the pocket.
05:37It's when he's inside the pocket.
05:39Pre-snap penalties, my friend.
05:41How does that get fixed?
05:44Yeah, I mean, you got to work it, right?
05:48A lot of it's the players.
05:49You know, we had the same discussion when it was Kevin Stefanski.
05:53You know, I mean, they coach it.
05:55Everybody coaches it.
05:57Some, I guess, coach it better than others.
05:59But, you know, I was trying to re-watch part of the game and I just watched that last drive.
06:04You know, Malachi Corley gets an illegal shift.
06:06Well, it's because everybody's late getting set.
06:09So when he went in motion again, not everybody was set.
06:12So is it the receivers because they didn't get set quick enough?
06:16Was it Watson because he motioned for Corley to move too quickly?
06:20You know, it could be any of those things.
06:21Titus Howard, obviously, right tackle.
06:23Struggled yesterday at three false starts.
06:25Now, he thought he was timing the snap right.
06:28And we see the tackles, right?
06:29Some of them get a quicker jump and it doesn't get called.
06:32Some, it gets called.
06:34You know, he was upset at the officiating because he thought he was getting starting when he was supposed to
06:39be.
06:40But there's too many of those.
06:42And that's been a consistent issue.
06:44And we've seen it.
06:45You know, we saw it on the short yardage with Fannin last week.
06:49And then yesterday, it winds up not biting the Browns because the defense gets a stop and Barnett gets to
06:55Young and causes the floater that Ronnie Hickman picks off to end the game.
07:00But, you know, Denzel Boston has an illegal formation penalty on that last drive, which saves Carolina from using a
07:09timeout, which means they get the ball back with a minute and one left rather than like 20 seconds or
07:1325 seconds.
07:14That's huge.
07:15Like, it changes the whole end of the game.
07:17And we're probably not even talking about whether Todd Munkett should kick a field goal or go for it on
07:21fourth down.
07:22But you have one of those kind of penalties.
07:24So, it certainly needs to be cleaned up.
07:25They've been, you know, relatively lucky to escape with two wins despite having all these penalties.
07:31And, you know, Todd talks about all the time that he hates crappy football.
07:34Well, it continues to show up.
07:35It'll be hard to fix before Thursday night because there's not a lot of practice time.
07:39But that has to be a focus because they just haven't been clean enough on offense.
07:43If my numbers are correct, 15 penalties in the first half.
07:47Half in the last two games, but only two in the second half.
07:50So, they're doing something better at halftime, either spreading the word or something, Scott.
07:56Something's changing.
07:57Yeah, calming down or maybe to simplify things at halftime.
08:02And that helps.
08:03Yeah.
08:04Whether it's cadence or motion, whatever it is.
08:07But, yeah, there's just been too many of those.
08:09And when you talk about the offense not being able to find a rhythm.
08:12And yesterday, obviously, it struggled to find a rhythm, especially in the second half.
08:16Three and out, three and out, three and out.
08:18That's part of it.
08:19Put yourself in long yardage situations.
08:22It's difficult.
08:23And it's true for every team.
08:25It's difficult to overcome those.
08:27Key to this team with all the young players.
08:30Young players getting better and stepping up.
08:32And Mason Graham looks like the poster child for that, Scott.
08:35Four sacks in three games.
08:37Yeah.
08:38And, you know, you watch him during training camp.
08:40And you talk to people during training camp.
08:42And I sat down with Mason after one of those camp practices.
08:46And you get a sense of, okay, I think it's going to be different this year.
08:49I think he's going to take a step.
08:51But you never know.
08:52And then you get to the season.
08:54And he's off to a great start.
08:56And it's not just the four sacks in three games.
08:59It's him in the backfield consistently.
09:01It's tackles for loss.
09:03You know, the first play of the game yesterday.
09:05I don't know if it went for a no gain or a tackle for loss.
09:08But he gets, he beats the center, gets the hubbard.
09:11And that's a great way to start the game, right?
09:13And they force a, you know, I think they force a quick punt out of Carolina there.
09:17So, he's been really disruptive.
09:20And when I talked to him during camp, he said, number one, he felt stronger.
09:24He lost some weight, but put on muscle from year one to year two.
09:29And then it took him a long time to get completely comfortable in the system.
09:33So, at Michigan, it was read and react, and you're not up the field.
09:37And we know what the Browns do.
09:38It's all attack, attack, attack.
09:40There's no hesitation there.
09:41And it took him a while, especially in the heat of the games, to feel really comfortable doing that.
09:48And he said, coming into year two, that's where he was.
09:51And it's certainly showing up.
09:53And if you talk about how you're going to replace Myles Garrett and how is this defense still going to
09:57be a top whatever defense without Jim Schwartz and without Myles Garrett,
10:01it starts with guys taking a jump, and he's taking the biggest jump of anybody I can think of.
10:06I thought the interesting part of your story is how much they pressured Bryce Young.
10:11According to NextGenStats, it was 51% of his dropbacks.
10:14And, you know, we had walked into this game last week.
10:17People were starting to question Jared Burse after two games, and he ends up with six pressures.
10:23I'm wondering, and I'm just curious your thoughts on this, that did we really – I mean, we knew –
10:29everyone was talking about the offensive line needing time to gel,
10:31but maybe we should have been thinking about the defensive line too.
10:36Yeah, I don't know if it's a gelling, or I think a lot of it is Jared Burse getting comfortable
10:42in the 4-3 system,
10:45which is a change from the 3-4, hand in the ground.
10:48You know, they moved him around more yesterday, you know, there were a couple of those plays where he's in
10:54the middle off the ball
10:55and, like, the fifth rusher switched sides a little bit.
10:59They're trying to find matchups for him to have success.
11:02And yesterday was a good matchup.
11:04It was a better matchup than the first two weeks.
11:05Week two, Tristan Burse is a bad matchup for Burse, especially with Burse's power,
11:10because Burse just kind of swallowed him up.
11:13Yesterday, Burse was able to get into the tackles and push them into Bryce Young,
11:17which was the plan because Young's smaller, has a hard time seeing when there's a bunch of big bodies around
11:22him.
11:22So it's set up well.
11:24But then you saw Burse have an impact.
11:26Now, he's still looking for that first sack, right?
11:28I don't think he's had the impact that he would like to have or that the Browns would like him
11:33to have.
11:33But yesterday, you saw him start to get those pressures.
11:37He was pushing, was forcing Young to escape into sacks.
11:42I think Isaiah McGuire had one where Burse was really critical in that.
11:47So I thought that was as well as he's played.
11:49But I think there's still more room, especially when you haven't had a sack yet.
11:52I know sacks aren't the end-all, be-all.
11:55But you need to see Jared Burse pick up some sacks.
11:59Scott, thank you, buddy.
