2026 MXGP of Andalucia MXGP Qualifying Race
Transcript
00:22Hello everybody, welcome back to the MXGP of Andalucía, we are just outside of Almonte,
00:27you're in South West Spain. About half an hour from here you've got the border of Portugal
00:32and a beautiful part of the world it is. First time here as well, brand new venue, brand new circuit.
00:38Sand, not hard pack.
00:43The MXGP qualifying race coming up in just a few moments time, 20 minutes plus two laps.
00:48We're live on mxgptv.com, the final race of the afternoon here on Saturday
00:54with so much more to come on Sunday with the concluding races of vmx125-250,
00:59of course all four races to each from MX2 and MXGP.
01:04The racetrack, there's the view from above, 1700 meters long, 80 meters down into turn one,
01:10do that sweeping left down past pit lane into turn two, that's the first wall of noise through the
01:15grandstand. Turn right through turn three and then left through turn four, then you've got
01:23more corners turn five, six, the long sweep in left that is turn seven and the liquid molly jump and
01:28then of course we head back up into that top corner where you can see the left and then a
01:32right
01:33and then left just before the Monster Energy step down. Mexican wave, Spanish wave going on here
01:41and another grandstand over there on the far side. Track's taking a bit of a battering, a lot of riders
01:47here
01:47this weekend, 125-250, MX2, MXGP, a little bit sandy, we've had a bit of weather as well the last
01:53couple of nights during the day it's been fine but given that circuit conditions are very very good
01:59and it's a challenging racetrack for the riders here, that's what it looks like on the track
02:04Mac from the finish line there to the one heading in an anti-clockwise direction so over the one turn
02:09left over that first jump, of course that's the end of sector one, sector two bottom of your screen
02:14on the liquid molly up through the waves, couple of corners later end of sector three before you turn
02:17left turn 12 and then the final sector. Remember because the start is here we don't pass the finish
02:22line until the end of that opening lap and you've got to go from finish line to finish line to
02:27register
02:27that first official lap and a lap time. Riders have been out on track for their sighting lap, this was
02:32them leaving a moment ago led out by Geoffrey Hurlings, the gap between Hurlings and Lucas Coonan
02:37in the end in the time practice session was 0.0032 of a second
02:45in the free practice it was 0-0-1 so one thousandth of a second between Hurlings and Coonan in
02:53free practice
02:530-0-3-2 in time practice. PJ there he qualified in 10th place we'll do all of that in
02:59a moment
03:04atmosphere starting to build of course we've got uh the usual favorites and all the rest of it,
03:09a couple of Spaniards but let's go down to Lisa Lane she was on the grid a few moments ago
03:12she caught
03:13up with Lucas Coonan, Red Bull KTM factory racing, before that though the number 83 home rider Gabriel
03:18SS24 KTM factory rookies rider Aureole Oliver.
03:24So we're almost ready for the MXGP qualifying race let's grab a few words with Gabriel SS24
03:31rider Aureole Oliver. Aureole I want to chat with you because you've moved up a class to MXGP but pre
03:37-season
03:37you were looking good on the 450 at the British you're looking good on the 450 but how are you
03:41feeling? I'm feeling good uh I'm just struggling I don't know what I don't know why but it's not from
03:46this year with the time practice and free practice to make a fast lap you know we will need to
03:50work on
03:50that intensity for sure still it's the beginning of the season and we have a lot of races to go
03:55but
03:56the feeling is good on the bike so I'm looking forward to the to the motors. It's a home round
04:01for you and it's quite a new track I mean it's an old track this but it's been made over
04:05for the GP
04:05weekend do you know the track at all have you ever raced here before in the past? I didn't know
04:09the
04:09track because my home it's like 12 hours from here. Because you're in Barcelona aren't you? Yeah
04:13in Barcelona but no really good track amazing for me it's nice that it's Sunday I like the sun
04:20and yeah I'm enjoying it a lot will be the race I will see the race I think it's difficult
04:24to pass
04:25so we will be really important to start. Have a good home GP thank you Aureole.
04:31Okay time now to touch base with Red Bull KTM Factory MXGP rider Lucas Coonan just reflect back
04:37to Argentina the opening round I guess not your usual explosive self and you did allude to the
04:42fact that you had an eye issue in that in that second race how were you feeling after that first
04:46round? I mean I feel good just need to wait one more day because I took a lot of dirt
04:50in my eye from
04:52the quality road model and then I just tried to take it out but you know how more you touch
04:56at it
04:56how more it gets like irritated so I mean I just tried to to get over it at the weekend
05:02score some
05:02points but now it's a new weekend and we start from let's say not from zero but we see what
05:07others
05:08already have done so no I mean also this time practice was fine I was happy with my pace I
05:13just
05:13put the lap down and didn't any risk I knew Jeffrey was wanting to put a fast lap but there
05:18is nothing
05:18if the gaps are so close I mean it's it's race now so it's gonna be fun and just out
05:23of interest
05:24Lucas why the change of number for 2026? I mean better better tell that later on more time
05:30interesting okay well good luck there uh very uh suspicious there uh time now for the MXGP qualifying
05:44Bryce yeah great to hear the views there of uh Lucas there
05:52and of course uh Oriol Oliver Jeffy Hurlings going to the line on pole position he was fastest by
05:57three hundredths of a second the gap was even less than that in the free practice a thousandth of a
06:01second between Hurlings and Kunin kind of all great to see him back this weekend the number 74 Nostan
06:06Hasbana Ryder as he goes to line third Hedder Roma Fervor Tim Geiser Tom Biel Albi Ferrato and uh CV10
06:13Calvin Ballandru Andrea Adamo Pauls Jonas and the rest of the guys you see there Ben Watson great to see
06:18him back this weekend on the dirt store triumph just doing the European rounds for now at least
06:22Adam Sterry on the chambers racing KTM and then Ruben Fernandez uh Hurley's got a case of the earth of
06:28kits at the
06:28moment but hopefully that passes and uh it can be uh full gas not literally because that might cause
06:34other problems if you know what i mean but uh anyway Jeffrey Hurlings makes his way to the line
06:40so the new rule is the mechanic can step there because obviously some of those backboards are a
06:46little bit further back but they cannot stand on the mesh that's the holy grail only the rider and the
06:50bike can go on the mesh so uh when you see Simone Filotti there just carrying the rear end of
06:59uh
06:59Jeffrey Hurling's machine obviously he was able to step as close to that as possible but not touch the
07:05mesh the 74 Kai DeWolf here to have fun he said throwing some big whips and stuff in practice
07:12and he was only three tenths off Jeffrey Hurling's pole time this morning in the time practice session
07:20and there is the number 84 Honda HRC Patronus rider
07:26fastest in free practice and time practice a couple weeks ago in Argentina didn't score points
07:30in the qualifying race though went down remember and at some point damaged to the bike in that crash
07:35kept him down in 12th place Lucas Coonan on the other hand second in the qualifying race just
07:41couldn't find a way past the fast starting number 16 Tom Biel who took the red plate after the first
07:46quality race of the season into the main Grand Prix on Sunday Kai DeWolf former MX2 world champion
07:52Astan has far in a factory racing kind of no pressure on him really is there other than from himself
07:58because first round he's done and dusted he's starting at a 50 point deficit this weekend
08:04and so anything that he can claw back this weekend going forward well that's going to be a bonus for
08:08him Romain Fevre fourth in the time practice third overall in the championship standings
08:14because Hurlings and Tom Biel tied at the top on 50 points each Fevre only two behind though on 48
08:22then Lucas Coonan just six adrift Maxime Renaud had a crash in time practice this morning wasn't sure where
08:28it was on track because we zoomed in on him but Maxime Renaud six overall in the standings coming
08:34into this weekend but wasn't too impressed with his 12th in time practice his teammate though Tim Geiser goes
08:42the line fifth for Monster Energy Yamaha
08:53and then number 80 Andrea Adama Red Bull KTM factory racing ninth in time practice 2.2 seconds off the
09:01pace but as Lucas Coonan said he knew himself that Jeffrey wanted to put in a fast lap that's what
09:07he kind
09:07of does that's what he enjoys doing but the times are so close these are Lucas Coonan's words as we
09:12look at Ruben Fernandez Honda HRC Petronas times so close it doesn't really matter the race is something
09:18else and the race is about to happen now MXGP qualifying race 20 minutes plus two laps
09:25Iago Kietze center of your screen a moment ago there's a 303 of Albi Ferrato he's in gate three
09:29so you got Hurlings Coonan Ferrato Fevre Tom Bial a couple positions further down fly racing 15 second
09:40board goes up for the first time this weekend for the MXGP class TMS gets everywhere doesn't he
09:47there's Joe in the background again five second board turns heads down revs up gates about to drop
09:59any moment now in Andalusia oh I'll tell you what Kai de Waal almost tried to go too early and
10:04it caught him
10:05out and it's Vial who else but Guadagnini looking to get around the outside he goes off track sends
10:13everybody flying somehow emerges in around about fourth place but it's Vial who leads but
10:20Coonan finds his way by at the end of the straight and leads the way
10:30Renault in third Guadagnini in fourth and behind them Verlandrin on the Red Bull Ducati then Ferrato
10:37Horgmo, Fevre, Adamo, Steri, Geisler where is Hurlings
10:48De Wolf down in 29th here's Jeffrey Hurlings he's right at the back so did he go down in turn
10:53two
10:54the Honda HRC Petrolas rider these qualifying races are not going to plan for the bullet in 2026 are they
11:02the one after it goes to?
11:03Kunan leads the way Vial second top of your screen turn ten third Maxime Renault fourth Mattia Guadagnini in
11:11Orange then Verrato
11:16in fact Volandren has found his way past and moves into fourth place Guadagnini now in fifth position
11:3330 riders on the grid 29th and 30th DeWolf and Herlings I wonder if those two came together
11:40at some point turn three maybe because everything looked okay or maybe just as we panned across to
11:48the other angle from turn one to turn two
11:55but Lucas Kunen leading the way
12:02confident in his speed from free practice and time practice confident in his ability
12:06in these kind of conditions is already 2.1 seconds clear of Tom Villar right here's what happened to Herlings
12:17gate number one over on the right hand side
12:20DeWolf gate number five neither of those two made a good start
12:25is he going to fold the front oh wow
12:29Paul's a flip and he took out DeWolf at the same time look DeWolf had nowhere to go
12:37watch it from this angle Herlings he gets squeezed a bit here by
12:41Kunen but no problems there but then he just came in caught the bank
12:45there look like a soft patch man he went down hard
13:00so a lot of work to do once again for the number 84
13:06DeWolf 25th Herlings 27th at the moment not the start either of the Dutch riders wanted
13:15but Lucas Kunen he won't care too much about that he's 2.8 seconds clear of the other Honda HRC
13:21Petronas rider Tom Villar who was victorious in the qualifying race last time out the opening round
13:27in Argentina
13:29Kunen caught him couldn't pass him
13:33now the roles are reversed Kunen leads Villar second
13:39but that gap is growing to more than three seconds
13:44with the first official lap complete
13:51Max and Renault another 3.7 seconds further back then we've got Pallana on four Guadalini five
13:55Ferrato six Fevre in seventh Villar would lead the championship if you put the flag out now
14:01by seven points over Lucas Kunen who would be tied with Fevre in third Herlings on 50 obviously not picking
14:08up points at the moment in four
14:12the importance of these qualifying races
14:17yes it's only the opening round but make hay while the sun shines and all the rest of it take
14:22those points while you can
14:24especially if you can
14:28go ahead and get the first one
14:28Nico Grootman there the 36 just going after Jonas those two fighting over 12
14:32here's Renault coming towards us
14:36so the 959 Montreux Yamaha still there in third where's his teammate Nate
14:40Tim Geiser
14:43just behind Albi Ferrato
14:54see how challenging the racetrack is not a difficult track to learn in terms of uh
15:00if you go through the track in your mind you know where turn one two what the jumps are the
15:03waves and
15:04everything else but just the physical challenge now with it chopping up those braking bumps they're
15:09very very big it's stodgy ground in places high speed accelerate braking bumps as well at some of the ends
15:16of the straights
15:19but Maxime Renault fastest in sector one he hits the line now
15:25third
15:31there's Guadagnini just going through here's Fevre Fevre in six Geiser seven Ferrato's lost two positions
15:37he finds himself down in eighth place at the moment so did the big man make a mistake
15:46Fevre going after Guadagnini here
15:51one thing Fevre can do is also right sand does the dutch championships
15:57when he has the opportunity when there's no clash which invariably is never and look at him
16:02sneaking down the inside of Guadagnini
16:05picks him off moves into sixth place into fifth place
16:15Lucas Kunin's time though 143 seven two seconds quicker than Tom Biel yeah now almost six seconds between them
16:23good to see Jose Butron here 173 this weekend he's in 18th place former third place finish you in the
16:30mx2 world championship
16:32former master of the foxhole shot as well i think he was the first winner in mx2
16:36when that happened as well then we hit the mesh and then it all went wrong for him
16:44Fevre on a charge eyeing up Volandran on the Red Bull Ducati who's ahead of him
16:51ah Kunin throws away the lead or does he simple tip over or was it just a overshoot in the
16:57corner
16:58he had 6.4 seconds to the final couple of corners
17:03yeah that little double there oh very lucky almost eight dirt
17:17bit of a wake-up call
17:20one of those things that do i really need to be pushing a second or two a lap ahead of
17:25everybody
17:25else but then if that's your pace and you're comfortable with it then why not
17:30and if you can throw down the marker to everybody as well just to say i dominated and even better
17:37right dwarf is up into 20th place at the moment
17:47through turn seven over the liquid mileage up here for lucas kunin
17:52looking very calm isn't he at the moment apart from that one little error where he just went deep front
17:57end
18:00first
18:01found his mojo again hasn't he
18:15twin brother sasha won the mx2 qualifying race a short while ago is it going to be a kunan double
18:26certainly looks comfortable
18:28certainly looks comfortable
18:29see if he can keep this next right hand landing cleaner this time around
18:34doubling in yeah a lot cleaner anyway it's gap as he hits the line
18:43the last split was 7.8 does he maintain that does it go out
18:46one forty four six his lap time valandran under attack from
18:52fevere here as they approach the final corner gap 8.8 seconds now between kun and vial renault
18:582.6 seconds further back nothing in between calvin valandran on the red bull ducati and
19:03kawasaki racing teams roman fevere here number one
19:09french one two at the top of the championship at the moment we put the flag out now vial 59
19:13fevere 54 lucas kunin 52 hurlings 50 then renault 42
19:25you know what this is a bright start for the red bull ducati of calvin valandran
19:31fevere looking impatient and there's going to be a clash
19:35just forced his way down the inside valandran thought better of it in the end fevere now up to fourth
19:50decided you know what i'll take the second route fevere i think he just pulled the clutch did the old
19:56panic rev technique
19:59valandran gave him a wide berth
20:02and already fevere closing in on maxim renault there he is just going out of shot
20:06so fevere eyeing up third here
20:11remember 10 points for the win in the qualifying race world championship point standings
20:1510 9 8 7 6 down to 10. jeremy siwa has had a nightmare he was down in 23rd a
20:21moment ago
20:22and uh jeremy siwa goes down on the exit
20:27of the second corner
20:33in fact he was up to about 19th wasn't he because uh mandonek went by so now down to 23rd
20:38and see what
20:41Anakin right Roman Fevere
20:51pushing hard testing the boundaries of adhesion and the parameters of the circuit here's Hurlings
21:02with a lot of work to do he's now to 18 he's got DeWolf there ahead of him look
21:10this again the replay of what happened at the start gate number one DeWolf gate number four
21:15or five to his right watch here hurlings inside gate get squeezed to the bank a little bit here
21:24but as he comes in he hits a soft patch around about there look wow
21:30hard hit DeWolf has nowhere to go he clatters him as he goes down thinking oh sneaks on the inside
21:36look at that boom takes it both down and that's the left side the injured thumb with the ligaments
21:42that Kai DeWolf injured so hopefully no after effects from that but hurlings following him
21:49through he's got uh he's just found his way past Jago Kiertz here on the beta so he moves up
21:54into 17
21:56Jeffrey hurlings DeWolf there ahead of him look 74 in 16th place
22:03eight minutes to go plus two laps how far is he off at the points 21 seconds
22:09i'm not going to say it's impossible but Nyon is there is another two laps in there as well but
22:17some pretty tasty sand riders in there Watson in that 10th place for instance
22:25Fevre made light work of Renault at the moment in this last couple of laps these two fighting over
22:41third place
22:44how far down the track is Vial
22:50another five seconds
22:56lap times Lucas Cooner 144-7 out on his own without a care in the world 47s for Vial 48s
23:04Renault 47-6
23:08there he is in red
23:14Fevre searching for lines look outside no big bumps doesn't want to get caught following just looking
23:22for anything it's the only good thing about a bad start is you learn to find new lines around a
23:27racetrack
23:28where to pass someone like Lucas Cooner for instance doesn't have that intel
23:33he's been out on his own since he took the lead early on from Vial on that first lap
23:42why would you sit there eating rooster sandwiches all day off the
23:45rear tires of the riders in front of you felt that one front end went deep for Fevre
23:54having to use all of the racetrack here
24:01Yamaha and Kawasaki crews down there in pit lane looking on
24:14a lot of squeaky brake action as they hit those last couple of corners
24:22Cooner walking away with it Vial happy to sit there maybe conserve some energy for tomorrow
24:2913.3 seconds of drift he's around that turn three six seconds further up the track as these
24:36two start to trip each other up Maxime Renault and Romain Favre
24:40confidence booting confidence boosting ride this for Maxime Renault
24:46fourth of the qualifying race back end left and right almost set him out the side door didn't
24:52matter which one managed to stay on two wheels though in the end
25:02is working him hard though isn't he chooses to go inside this time felt he lost too much time last
25:07time around searching for those new lines right taking a look back wants to know if he makes a
25:13lunch is it going to cost him sees that Valada and two and a half seconds further back
25:19thinks I'm willing to risk it for a biscuit
25:26maybe even a scooby snack who knows
25:37I'm not doing a great job of sustaining and uh withstanding the pressure from behind
25:43the pressure from behind from his fellow frenchie
25:54those bumps are almost enduro par de 2k-esque aren't they that three-hour beach race on the northwest
25:59coast of france which is south of calais happens every year at the end of uh well can be the
26:07end of
26:07jan early feb it's on the 15th february this year
26:13he's got that kind of feel about it this sand has
26:18Renault looking for momentum around the outside febvre jumps to the inside does he steal a couple of
26:23bite legs hard to say but he's got his parts on the track where he's quicker and reels in oh
26:32just
26:33lost his foot peg but fortunately his left leg was strong and steady on the on the left foot rest
26:44the longer three seconds adrift of these two still a magnificent showing that for the red bull ducati though
26:56ruben fernandez has been down
27:00emerges just behind jago kietz he was in 12th place
27:17a frustrated rover febvre here wasting massive amounts of energy trying to find his way past
27:25maxim renault looks like renault's just concentrating on clicking off his laps hitting his mark
27:33febvre going left right catches him loses ground the odd hiccup here and there but will he get his
27:39opportunity in the next two and a half minutes plus two laps be a hard earned third place if he
27:45can
27:45find his way past the monster energy yamaha
28:04the wolf and herlings 12th and 13th
28:08the wolf is four seconds behind hordmo another second behind ferrato
28:14for that 10th place ferrato 152 48 for de wolf so there's some legs you know what de wolf could
28:24probably sneak 10th place here
28:31oh adamo and geyser
28:36geyser seven adamo eight adamo looked like he just found his way past
28:40geyser goes back through and that one mistake there from adamo
28:45he just found his way still to hollow in one minute
28:59enzo loowks the brazilian in 17th place jonas has lost gran he's down the 16th at the moment
29:10Gaisa with Guadagnini ahead of him, in Orange, on the Van Rooch ATM.
29:19Adamo riding with some intensity and some purpose as well, look.
29:23Taking those outside lines.
29:30Looks comfortable, doesn't he, Adamo?
29:33Former NX2 world champ.
29:39Hurlings has found his way past De Wulf, maybe it's Hurlings that's going to find his way into the top
29:43ten at that one championship point.
29:46It's going to be three laps to go, isn't it?
29:49Because Kunin already over the line.
29:54Adamo goes through now.
29:5833 seconds down on the leader.
30:03So the two-lap one will go out next time round for Lukas Kunin.
30:09Time is up anyway.
30:14Adamo finds his way back past Gaisa.
30:23Here's your race leader, Lukas Kunin.
30:32It's been a quiet walk in the park, hasn't it?
30:34For the Belgian on the Red Bull KTM.
30:38Not a speck of dirt on him.
30:39And he's dressed in white as well.
30:48It's going to be a fascinating contest, isn't it?
30:502026, the old guard of sort of Roman Fevre, Jeffrey Hurlings, Tim Geiser.
30:57You've got the new pretenders coming in.
30:59Lukas Kunin, Tom Villal, Adamo, De Wulf.
31:06Two more to go.
31:10For Lukas Kunin.
31:12The Red Bull KTM rider.
31:14Got to the front early, put some distance between himself and everybody else.
31:18And from there, stand-up wheelers all around.
31:21Take a bow, son.
31:26Villal realized quickly that,
31:28you know what, don't have the pace today.
31:30Don't really need the pace today.
31:33Tom Villal leads the championship as it stands right now.
31:3659, Fevre on 55.
31:38Lukas Kunin on 52.
31:39Hurlings still on 50.
31:41The gap, though, between 10th place for Rato
31:44and Jeffrey Hurlings, 8.2 seconds.
31:47They're 10th and 11th.
31:48But the gap, only two seconds a lap quicker
31:51between the two, the Italian and the Dutchman.
31:53He may just run out of time.
31:58But Fevre still not able to find his way past Renault.
32:02He knows every championship point will count in 2026.
32:05Does the defending champion.
32:21Vial and Renault, three Frenchies,
32:25with Fevre right there behind them.
32:27We've got a battle, three-way battle for second here.
32:29Tom Villal, Max and Renault, Fevre.
32:30Fevre. There is Vial in red, top of your screen,
32:33in second position.
32:36So while he's just been cruising there in second,
32:38these two have just been pushing on.
32:41Might even be a second place here for Renault
32:44and a third for Fevre.
32:46Unless, of course, Vial finds another gear,
32:50turns it back on.
32:54Back end, dancing around on Fevre
32:56as he exits turn 12.
32:58That left-hander.
33:05Six and a half seconds between Ferrato and Hurlings.
33:08Keeping an eye on that,
33:10because that's going to be a crucial point
33:12at the top of the championship, isn't it?
33:14Watch this.
33:15Left, right, left.
33:17He's not even in the army.
33:20But he's got his marching orders there, nearly.
33:28Hasn't given up, has he?
33:30The tenacity from Fevre.
33:32Likewise for Max and Renault.
33:40Back marker between Tom Villal,
33:42who has realized he sensed the danger from behind.
33:45The number 16 Honda HRC Petronas rider
33:47comes in to land.
33:51Final lap.
33:52He's not going to do it, is he, Hurlings?
33:545.2 seconds.
33:57Ferrato was a 48-2.
33:58Hurlings was a 46-1.
34:00De Wolf was a 45-4.
34:02He's only put 1.6 seconds behind the bullet.
34:06As we focus on Vial here.
34:10Just over a second and a half between him and Max and Renault.
34:20What a race.
34:21In many ways, different ways.
34:32What a race.
34:33He's got his credit here.
34:34Look, 4.4, the gap between Ferrato.
34:36If Ferrato just switches off, thinks, you know what?
34:38I've got a tenth.
34:39Yeah, it's a qualifying point.
34:44Final turn.
34:45Checkered flag.
34:46Lucas Kunen.
34:48Showtime.
34:49As he hits the line, throws a whip.
34:52Wins comfortably.
34:55His first race win of 2026.
34:57Tom Vial comes through in second for under HRC Petronas.
35:02Third for Max and Renault, Monster Energy Yamaha.
35:05Fourth.
35:06And look at the frustration there from Roman Fabra,
35:08Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP.
35:12Lay low at the ready down there.
35:17Getting ready to have a word with LC5.
35:21Okay.
35:21Guadagnini over the line, seven.
35:23Geiser, eight.
35:25Watson should be over the line in ninth on the triumph.
35:28Ferrato is going to hang on.
35:30There he was in the background now.
35:32And then Hurlings, 11th, 2.3 seconds further back.
35:40Another Neil Poin in the qualifying race.
35:46He loses the championship lead to his teammate once again.
35:49Tom Vial on 59 points.
35:52Fevra, 55, Kunin, 52, Hurlings, 50.
35:56What a swing at the top of the championship from that qualifying race.
36:11Adamo found his way up to six, past Guadagnini on the final lap.
36:22Adamo found his way up to six, past Guadagnini on the final lap.
36:29He's here with us.
