20 November - National afternoon forecast presented by Aidan McGivern
Transcript
00:00Hi there, wintry scenes for some parts of the UK today. For many though, it's simply a cold, crisp but bright late autumn day. Plenty of sunshine in many locations, thicker clouds towards the east and we've still got these showers running into northern Scotland, eastern England, West Wales, Cornwall, Northern Ireland. These showers once more falling as rain and sleet around coast but inland and over higher ground continuing to fall as snow.
00:30with further significant accumulations for the likes of the North York Moors, the Highlands of Scotland. All of that brought about by strong northerly winds making it feel cold. These are the temperatures recorded by thermometers but of course in the wind our bodies will feel colder because they'll lose that layer of heat that normally surrounds them. So these are the feels like temperatures, minus two, minus three degrees on the coast of northeast England and northern Scotland.
00:58Heading into the evening and overnight, we do see the showers start to ease and that means that there'll be less snow accumulating. Still some across eastern parts but eventually the showers fading in many other locations. Widespread clear skies, although some patchy cloud will move into the Midlands and eastern England. And under those clear skies, following all those showers,
01:28and in some parts of snow-covered Scotland below minus ten Celsius, it is going to be a cold start to Friday and there'll be slippery surfaces out there, particularly around some of these northern and eastern coastal parts as well as southwestern areas where we've seen the showers coming and going.
01:45But a change is on the way. We've got a ridge of high pressure moving through on Friday before these fronts return from the Atlantic. The winds starting to return from the west as we go into the weekend.
01:57Initially though, Friday is cold but bright, a frosty and icy start for many of us. And then the showers in the east becoming fewer and further between.
02:06Many places ending up with a sunny afternoon. Plenty of sunshine for England and Wales but for parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland, particularly towards the northwest, thicker cloud arrives by the end of the afternoon and outbreaks of rain coming in from the Atlantic containing something a little less cold but still the potential for some hill snow as that system bumps into the colder air.
02:25And it will be a cold afternoon. Once again, temperatures inland of three to six degrees, around coasts seven to nine degrees, but towards the end of the day, back up into the double figures for the far northwest as that Atlantic air returns.
02:40And certainly that's going to mark a significant change going into the weekend. We've got the wet weather slowly making its way into western and northwestern parts on Friday night.
02:50Clearer spells towards the east and southeast, and as a result, another frosty night to come with, again, a few icy patches around and widely a cold start to the weekend.
03:01But once that Atlantic rain moves in, well, the weekend's going to be very different. Spells of rain, stronger winds as well.
03:10I wouldn't exactly call it mild, but it will be a little less cold than it's been through the past few days.
