16 February - National Weather Forecast presented by Aiden McGivern
Transcript
00:00Hi there, we start the week with yet more gusty winds and heavy showers, but looking on the bright side,
00:06there are brighter skies at the moment in between the showers.
00:10Daylight is increasing rapidly, the sun rising in the sky, and so, yeah, it's not going to be all gloom
00:17and doom.
00:19And the block to the northeast of the UK has shifted a little, and that's going to allow these systems
00:25to move through,
00:26more so than these systems have been moving through during the last few weeks.
00:31And so, at least looking ahead to the rest of the week, there will be at least one or two
00:35dry days rather than raining every day.
00:38But it will be raining in places today.
00:40Heavy showers moving through, some longer spells of rain at times where these showers merge together.
00:44Gusty winds accompanying the showers, making it feel relatively cool, but not as chilly as it felt at times over
00:51the weekend.
00:52Temperatures at or slightly above average for the time of year.
00:57Now, the gusty winds will increase in strength overnight, especially across the north and then later eastern parts,
01:04with coastal gales and gusts in excess of 50 miles an hour, or even more than 60 miles an hour
01:11for some exposed spots.
01:13In addition to that, we'll have rain, sleet and snow showers moving through northern Scotland, pushing down the east coast.
01:19Any snow accumulations are very patchy and limited generally to higher ground.
01:24The main issue, I think, by dawn will be icy patches.
01:28Northern Ireland, parts of Scotland into the north and east of England.
01:33Risk of slippery surfaces having seen showers through the day and overnight.
01:37And temperatures close to, if not below freezing in places by dawn.
01:42So, a chilly start for many of us, but a bright start.
01:44The showers mostly fading away by the morning.
01:47It remains gusty across the north and east of the UK during the morning.
01:53Those winds slowly moderating as we go into the afternoon.
01:56The showers eventually tending to ease away as well.
02:00And plenty of bright skies on Tuesday.
02:02A decent gap in between weather systems.
02:05Like I say, that's not something we've experienced much of recently.
02:09But, for Shetland, the chance later in the day of some more prolonged sleet and snow arriving.
02:15And towards the southwest, we end the day with another system pushing some persistent and eventually heavy rain in with
02:22snow over Dartmoor.
02:25Temperatures lower than Monday.
02:28Six to seven in the south.
02:30Four to five further north.
02:31But, adding on the wind, it's going to feel more like the low single figures or closer to zero on
02:37that east coast where the winds remain brisk into the afternoon.
02:41A further shower or two across eastern England and the north of Scotland will see showery sleet and snow for
02:50a time.
02:50But, it's this system as we end Tuesday that we've got a close eye on.
02:54This is going to bring a spell of wet and windy weather in from the south.
02:58And, as it bumps into the cold air, chance of some snow later Wednesday in places.
03:03We'll be keeping you updated on all of that, of course.
03:06We'll have those updates on our YouTube channel.
03:09So, make sure you subscribe and you'll never miss an update.
03:12Bye-bye.
