00:00Hi there. Strong winds from the north and northwest will continue the showers across north and northeastern parts of the
00:07UK overnight and bring increasingly cold air.
00:11So these showers will be falling as sleet and snow for northern Scotland, eventually some eastern southern parts of Scotland
00:16as well as eastern England seeing those wintry showers.
00:19I think at lower levels any accumulations are very small and patchy.
00:23Over the hills there will be some more moderate accumulations, 3cm above 150m, 8cm above 300m, but of more concern,
00:33I think, of greater risk of disruption would be the icy patches first thing across many parts of Scotland into
00:39the east of England as well as Northern Ireland following the showers and a freeze by dawn.
00:45Widespread clear skies developing as showers clear away, but temperatures dipping close to, if not below, freezing and especially cold
00:53for upland parts of Scotland where we've got snow cover already, minus 11, minus 12 Celsius.
00:58Not only that, we've got strong winds accompanying the showers and those icy patches.
01:02Northern Scotland initially and then later in the night and first thing Tuesday, eastern parts of England seeing wind gusts
01:08of 50 to 60 miles an hour.
01:11So that could be quite tricky to deal with, first thing, we've got the ice, we've got the wind and
01:16we've got those showers clearing away.
01:17But through the morning, it's an improving picture.
01:21We've got a ridge of high pressure building in, the winds gradually moderate, the showers eventually mostly push offshore.
01:28And then a spell of dry and bright weather for many parts of the UK.
01:32Still chilly through Tuesday afternoon, certainly a colder feel compared with Monday, 5 to 6 Celsius on the east coast.
01:39But when you factor in that strong wind, which will be continuing into the afternoon, expect it to feel more
01:45like 0 to 2 Celsius.
01:48We've got the winds picking up towards the southwest as well.
01:50That's going to push in cloudy skies across the southwest by the end of Tuesday and a spell of rain
01:57as the next weather front moves in.
01:58That's going to slide mostly light rain in initially, but it's going to open the door for another area of
02:04low pressure later Wednesday.
02:05There's a bit of uncertainty about the track of this low, and he has more on this in the Met
02:11Office Week Ahead video on our YouTube channel.
02:13But essentially, that's going to bring some precipitation into the south, mixing with cold air further north, and it will
02:20lead to a mixture of rain, sleet and hill snow by the end of Wednesday across most likely southern parts
02:29of the UK.
02:29But like I say, some uncertainty about the track of this system.
02:32But through Tuesday night, it's mostly just going to bring cloudy skies and light patchy rain into the southwest as
02:39well as southwest Wales.
02:40The cloudier skies reaching other parts of the UK, the wind picking up as well.
02:45But it's a cold start to Wednesday towards the north and the east once again.
02:49Widespread frost, perhaps some icy patches as well.
02:52But mostly it's a dry start with clear spells.
02:55A spell of snow actually on Tuesday night for a time later Tuesday into the first part of the night
03:01for Shetland.
03:02That clears away for the start of Wednesday.
03:04And then plenty of sunshine for much of Scotland, northeast England as well.
03:09A marked contrast compared with further southwest where we've got the rain pushing into the cold air.
03:14And as you can see, it leads to some snow over higher parts of Wales, perhaps Exmoor, by the end
03:20of Wednesday afternoon.
03:22And the breeze picking up as well.
03:25With the wind picking up with the cloud across many central and eastern parts of England, although we don't get
03:30the rain here, it's going to feel pretty raw out there.
03:33Four or five Celsius at best for Scotland, staying below freezing over upland areas.
03:37So, we end the afternoon with sunshine for Scotland and Northern Ireland.
03:42Cloudier skies further south.
03:43We've got this heavy rain developing for southern counties.
03:46How far north that gets and where we see the strongest winds and where we see any hill snow.
03:51That currently is a little uncertain.
03:53But that's for Wednesday night into the start of Thursday.
03:56And if you want to watch Annie's Excellent Explanation on all of that, head to our YouTube channel.
04:03Bye-bye.
