17 February - National Weather Forecast presented by Aidan McGivern
Transcript
00:00Hi there, a very good morning to you. A cold start out there this morning with icy patches
00:05in places, not just because of the clear skies overnight, but also because of a strong northerly
00:10wind. 50 to 60 mile per hour wind gusts into the north and the east for a time before eventually
00:15the winds moderate into the afternoon and following showers across northern and eastern
00:19parts of the UK and the overnight freeze, always some slippery surfaces first thing.
00:23But the showers tend to ease away as the day progresses and for many places it's a weather
00:28window into the afternoon. Plenty of dry and bright weather, but it is going to feel cold
00:33out there. Six or seven Celsius in the south, five in the east, but add on the wind, which
00:40will still be gusty into the afternoon, feeling more like zero Celsius or even minus one in
00:46the north of Scotland. Actually over upland parts of Scotland, temperatures will remain
00:49below freezing through the day after a particularly chilly start. We've got that cold air in place
00:55then as we end Tuesday, but weather systems are wanting to return from the southwest. At
01:01first they'll be weak, but another more active low pressure and weather front will move in
01:06later Wednesday, bringing some heavier rain to the south and perhaps causing some issues
01:11with rain, wind and snow across southern and maybe central parts of the UK. But some uncertainty
01:18on the track of this low, there are more details in Annie's week ahead forecast in our YouTube
01:23channel. Now, at first on Tuesday nights, we've got spells of rain pushing into the south and
01:28southwest. South Wales as well, not quite reaching Northern Ireland, but it does turn cloudy here
01:33with a brisk southeasterly wind. Elsewhere across the UK, areas of cloud move in from the southwest,
01:38but it stays clearest in the northeast of Scotland. Initially, some snow will move through Shetland
01:44earlier in the night, but that will clear by dawn. And then it's another chilly start for many of us
01:50on Wednesday morning, away from the far southwest, where the cloud and rain will keep things frost
01:55free. So, cold on Wednesday morning, a lot of cloud around, areas of medium and high level clouds,
02:02so some bright spells coming through and the best of the sunshine will be across Scotland.
02:06In fact, after a damp start for Northern Ireland, it turns increasingly dry and bright here by the
02:11afternoon with a brisk southeasterly breeze, making it feel cold. But we've got this north-south gradient
02:18in our weather with a lot of fine weather in the north, but thicker cloud further south and heavier
02:24rain arriving into the south and southwest by the end of Wednesday afternoon. Bumping into that cold air
02:30could lead to some snow over hills, but there's some uncertainty, like I say, about the position of
02:37this rain and hill snow. Increasingly so as we go into Wednesday night, and that tends to move across
02:44southern and perhaps central parts of the UK. So, we'll be keeping an eye on that system with the risk
02:51of impacts from rain, hill snow and from strong winds, and we'll keep you updated. But into Thursday,
02:57at least, that clears away and it's a mostly fine day. Bye-bye.
