There have been a series of clippers this week hitting areas from the Dakotas to the mid-Atlantic with wintry weather, and they're not done yet.
Transcript
00:00We're looking at the last six hours here. So you can see we switch over rain to snow around
00:05Allentown. So you're right on the cutoff really farther south. You don't get any accumulating
00:11snowfall. Syracuse, another spot that it's been a mix of snow, rain, a little bit of a wintry mix
00:18in there as well. So not really seeing accumulation there either. But some of us, we are adding on to
00:24the snow totals. Now, the other story here is the wind. And before we really dive into this,
00:27I'm going to take you to our alerts that have been issued because this tells you why the wind
00:30is a concern or what the impact from the wind could be. Blizzard warnings out for the higher
00:37elevations in West Virginia. This is now through 10 a.m. tomorrow. That's when it's set to expire.
00:45This means you should not be out on the roads in these counties unless it is an emergency. That
00:51is specifically what a blizzard warning will tell you in the wording of the actual alert.
00:56Now, elsewhere, we have lake effect snow warnings, winter storm warnings in the darker blue,
01:01all of the gray that you're seeing. Well, those are winter weather advisories. So snow and wind,
01:06the two big stories for the next 24 hours. Here's a closer look at what we're dealing with with the
01:11wind gusts. We're seeing it spread further to the east, now registering 18 mile per hour gusts in
01:16New York, 23 in Burlington, Buffalo 30. I want to focus in on that area of West Virginia with the
01:21blizzard warnings. We're maintaining the 12 to 24 mile per hour gusts here. The worst of it is
01:27tonight and things will be improving by the morning through the end of the day. Really, the morning
01:33could still see some blustery winds as well. So definitely could see stronger wind gusts. It could
01:39be worse, but it's enough that you can have some of that blowing snow. All right, tonight we see a
01:45switch. The clipper exits. It's lake effect snow that's left behind for the next 24 hours. The snowfall
01:50totals, they're not that impressive, especially when you think about lake effect, where a lot of
01:54times we're measuring in feet, not inches. It's the wind and the possibility of snow squalls that's the
01:59bigger concern here. I'll show you what it all looks like on future radar, help you time it out and give
02:03you an idea of what to expect. So the clipper takes a little bit of time exiting. By 10 p.m., it's rain in
02:08Boston, snow in northern New England, still some lingering snow showers into New York and Pennsylvania,
02:13but then into the overnight, it really is just the lake effect snow showers that are the problem.
02:19And you can see from future radar, the snow bands, they're not that heavy, which is why we're not
02:24talking about crazy snow totals. The other thing you see, though, Indianapolis into the Ohio Valley,
02:29Chicago. Here's our next clipper that's starting to move in Thursday to Friday. That's the timeline
02:34overall. Starts in the north central, of course, and then dives down into the mid-Atlantic. You are
02:39going to notice it dissipates a little bit, but we are looking at the possibility of some measurable
02:44snow into the mid-Atlantic. Once again, it's how we started the week. Could be how we end the week
02:49as well. Now, Thursday, Friday, here's what we're talking about an inch or more on our snow map. Most
02:55of us are in the one to three category, but some of us could see three to six inches of snow overall.
03:00All right. The other story here, of course, is the cold into the next clipper. Well, it brings a
03:06reinforcing push of Arctic air for some. The coldest air of the season so far. Now, I only talked about
03:13part of the impacts from this next clipper. Jeff's going to take it where we see the beginning of the
03:19impacts. Yeah, it's going to be really, really cold out here. We have a series of these clippers
03:23cutting through. Some areas are going to pick up maybe two to four inches of snow and then another two
03:27to four in a narrow stretch here, including possibly southern Ohio and maybe parts of extreme
03:33northern Kentucky as well. But we need to keep an eye out for this. In the meantime, even between
03:37storm systems, it's just messy. We have light snow and snow showers, some lake effect in progress in
03:42parts of Michigan, and even separate from the lakes, a little batch of some snow, light snow moving
03:47through the Quad City. Some of this may look a little worse than perhaps it should as, again, the blob of
03:52radar there kind of filling in some of the gaps. But there is some light snow falling, also a
03:56disturbance moving through the Dakotas. Behind that, though, we're going to get ready for two
04:00more clippers. One of these cuts through the northern plains on Thursday. Here it is. Minneapolis,
04:06one to three inches of snow, three to six inches in Waterloo, Iowa. That moves through Chicago with
04:11one to three inches probably Thursday night to early, early Friday morning. By Friday afternoon,
04:16that's mainly out of here. A new system brings some light snow here into Wisconsin. But here's the
04:22next true clipper that will follow suit on Saturday, rapidly diving through parts of the plains. By
04:29Saturday evening, it's down into the Ohio Valley, right back where the first one will have exited.
04:34So system number one brings us that one to three inch event. Minneapolis to Chicago, three plus
04:39inches, Waterloo, Peoria, and west of Indianapolis. Right behind that, the second one follows.
04:45Anna talked about the arrival of that Arctic area to the northeast. It'll be established first in the
04:49upper Midwest as system number two cuts on through. So again, Saturday is going to be a messy day there
04:56in the Midwest. Cleveland at Chicago, Sunday. This is behind that second clipper. The moisture is
05:01going to be out of here. But look at these temperatures. Highs only around 10. Accu at the
05:05real field temperature, 15 below zero for the pregame. It's going to be brutally cold. And even in
05:10Cincinnati, behind clipper number two, we're stuck in the teens. This is cold here for that AFC matchup.
