On the northern side of storms roaring through the Midwest, winter weather isn't over yet.
Transcript
00:00There is a cold side to this storm system though as well and it's not just thunderstorms and severe weather
00:07but there's some snow and ice with this storm and another one that follows so we want to send things
00:12over now to Duluth, Minnesota.
00:14Anna, not so inviting out there in the harbor camp.
00:18No, right at 32 degrees at the freezing mark and I think, am I seeing some active snowflakes falling?
00:27Yes, in the foreground there.
00:28Chunks of ice.
00:28Oh, yeah.
00:29Yeah, okay.
00:30Well, that matches exactly what we've been seeing on radar and what we've been seeing in storm reports.
00:34At home, you might be thinking, yes, it's obviously snowing.
00:36I'm looking at a very small screen.
00:38Let me preface with that.
00:39Sometimes it's a little hard to see the active precipitation on the camera but let's talk about what has happened.
00:45Our radar estimated snowfall.
00:47Some areas have gotten four plus inches of snow in the last 24 hours.
00:53That's significant for April.
00:55I mean, especially some of you.
00:56I know these are areas that we expect late season snow but you might have thought it was over with.
01:02Well, not too soon if that's the case.
01:03But I'm much more concerned about this.
01:05What we're seeing, the freezing rain especially.
01:07We have some sleep reports and that's bad enough.
01:09Ice is ice.
01:10But freezing rain, it just creates that thick layer of ice on the surface.
01:15And I'm saying thick because some of you have seen more than half an inch of ice.
01:18Yeah, that causes widespread problems.
01:21We're talking power outages galore and that is exactly what we are seeing.
01:25Wisconsin hit the hardest here, especially central Wisconsin, where, as one of our forecasters familiar with the area has told
01:31us,
01:32it's where the power lines are not buried, they're above ground, which, of course, is going to cause problems when
01:37we have tree limbs falling down.
01:38We have power lines coming down because of the ice weighing them down.
01:41Michigan getting in on things as well, really, to no surprise.
01:44Michigan, you tend to hop on the power outages with an event like this.
01:48Now, we still have an active threat ongoing.
01:51We have several types of winter weather alerts, including some areas under an ice storm warning here into the UP
02:00of Michigan, into far northern Wisconsin.
02:02When all is said and done tonight, we will be seeing several inches of snow.
02:07And you can see temperatures certainly supporting this at this point.
02:10Here's what we're talking about with the ice through tonight.
02:13But then there's another round that takes over tomorrow.
02:16Significant impacts continuing.
02:18And a lot of the same areas, you're going to get hit again with a couple more inches of snow
02:22and more freezing rain.
02:24So be prepared for it.
