Multiple rounds of wintry weather are in store for much of the northern U.S. in the second week of December.
Transcript
00:00The trend really continues this week with the snow and the cold.
00:03I mentioned what you started the week with.
00:05That's what you're going to be dealing with really the rest of the week.
00:07Let's take a look at how this plays out into the northeast and the north central,
00:12the Great Lakes, the northern half of the country, just about.
00:14Jeff will cover the northwest, though.
00:16All right, zooming into radar and satellite,
00:18we're working on getting that snow out of there,
00:20but let's take a quick look at the storm reports.
00:23How much snow have we seen?
00:24A lot of snow reports populating here, and we just got even more that loaded here.
00:285.1 inches into southern Virginia, further to the north, 3 inches.
00:33Let's take a look at West Virginia with a 5-inch report with snow still falling.
00:38I want to point out these snow reports because it is significant,
00:42especially this part of the country, to get 5 inches of snow in 24 hours.
00:46Yeah, that causes some problems.
00:486 inches, snow starting to wind down in eastern Virginia.
00:52We get to North Carolina, and we have a trace reported, 3 tenths of an inch.
00:56The snow total is not as impressive, but still, hey, it's North Carolina.
00:59It's early December.
01:00It's not even technically winter yet.
01:02And the alerts, they continue.
01:04Winter storm warnings, winter storm watches, winter weather advisories.
01:07And one other thing to point out here, we also have high wind warnings.
01:11That is a cold front, not a line on the pen like I wanted to draw, but you get the point.
01:16Wind and snow, that is the concern because that is a bad, bad combination.
01:21Let's break down how it plays out.
01:23Round after round of snow throughout the week as we get clipper system after clipper system.
01:28Here's what it looks like on future radar here.
01:30So we exit from Virginia.
01:33The attention turns to the Great Lakes as we head into tomorrow morning.
01:37But I want to point out, too, we have system number one here right around Michigan.
01:41System number two, not too far off.
01:44In fact, when I show you our snow map here in just a minute, both of these systems are on one snow map because it's one right after the other.
01:51We'll continue to play this out through the day on Tuesday.
01:54We start to get into the northeast, somewhere like Chicago.
01:57That's where you really need to watch out for the mix of types of precipitation.
02:00We could see some freezing rain.
02:02We could see some sleet.
02:03We could see very dangerous situations on the roads because of the freezing rain or the sleet.
02:08Now, overall, we talk about this snow.
02:10It's not crazy snow totals.
02:12It's really more about how many days you're going to get snow this week versus how many inches of snow you end up seeing.
02:19As we go through Wednesday, we get into the evening overnight hours.
02:23A switch takes place.
02:24It's now lake effect snow.
02:25Our clipper is out of here.
02:27That's going to be a separate snow map that I will show you here.
02:31All right.
02:31We continue on through time here.
02:32There's even a late week system that's going to move through.
02:35But I want to focus in on the short term here, this snow map.
02:38We're getting up to a 6 to 12 inch category.
02:40It's not very widespread.
02:43It's very small areas that could get up to the AccuWeather local storm acts of 15 inches.
02:47Again, it's not about the amount of snow.
02:49It's about the combination with the wind, especially.
02:52Somewhere like Chicago, we get a coating to an inch, about 12 hours of snow overall.
02:56But take a look at the wind concerns.
02:59Omaha, Sioux Falls, Minot, North Dakota, 40, 50, even up to 60, 70 plus mile per hour wind gusts.
03:05That can create rapid drops in visibility that are going to be a concern.
03:09Even as this moves east since the lake affects snow, snow squalls are a concern as well.
03:13For more information on the weekends, this is a first mile.
03:16We have a Bakradian that's going to be a concern for the windленing.
03:17Where is it?
03:18Watch this, when you move around.
03:19You can see the wind.
03:20That can make a look of the wind.
03:21That can make a look.
03:21Over here, if you move around.
03:23That can make a look.
03:24I'll show you a bit.
03:24That can be a beautiful eye for the wind.
03:26It's not about the wind.
03:27I can make a look.
03:29I'm ready to look at the wind.
03:29It's not about the wind.
03:30It's not about the wind.
03:32Where is it?
03:33It's not about the wind.
03:35It's not about the wind.
03:36It's not about the wind.
03:37It's so small or the wind.
