The third full weekend of February will kick off with rain in much of the Northeast and snow in New England, but by Sunday, snow is expected from the Appalachians up to Boston.
Transcript
00:00Well, we're dealing with a couple of storms, two of them that will impact the northeast over the next several
00:04days.
00:04Very different storm systems. The first one Friday into Saturday, an icy mix early Friday in the Poconos, pooling northeast.
00:12We'll see a changeover to rain for many of us. Most of us further south will be very warm with
00:15some rain.
00:16And we've got snow building through the New England states.
00:18Let's take a look at highs on Friday. Big contrast, upper 60s in areas down around Richmond, Virginia.
00:23There could be a rumble of thunder amid your showers there, but we're stuck in the 30s into New England
00:27with snow accumulating.
00:28And Saturday, still some lingering snow, still accumulating in central New England.
00:33That's for the first storm system. That'll bring us some areas of the deeper blue, 6 to 12 inches of
00:37snow, into the Adirondacks, parts of the Green and White Mountains, 1 to 3 inches in Boston.
00:42Now, there's that first system. We really have a lot of eyes on the storm after this one, though, as
00:48well.
00:48So there's that sloppy mix, Scranton in the morning. This pools through the New England states.
00:52It's significant snow late Friday through Saturday into central New England, then fizzling Saturday afternoon and evening.
00:59But then we turn our attention to the south. We've got a storm that moves through the mid-Atlantic. That
01:04heads out to sea.
01:05Another one follows. That will help to seed and strengthen a coastal low.
01:09In the interior, there's going to be some snow, widespread snow, for the interior northeast, at least central Pennsylvania, parts
01:17of western Maryland, on Sunday.
01:20And a little farther south, we've got rain.
01:22So two potential storm scenarios.
01:24One is that this strengthens a little slower, a little more delayed, goes out to sea more with fewer impacts.
01:30If it strengthens more rapidly and hugs the coast, then we're dealing with a big winter storm.
01:35Our most likely scenario is kind of favoring the slightly farther east scenario, though there will be that interior disturbance.
01:41Regardless, it will bring us some snow and a rain-snow mix into areas around the Chesapeake and Delaware bays.
01:46So when we take a look at our initial snowfall forecast, one to three inches for most of the big
01:50cities.
01:51A little more in Boston, but there's potential for more along the beaches and in the mountains of West Virginia.
