National afternoon forecast presented by Alex Deakin
Transcript
00:00Storm Bram continues to cause problems. Whilst the rain may be easing, there is a continued risk of flooding and the winds are actually going to strengthen in many places through the rest of today.
00:11Here's the bigger picture, the view from space. The UK smothered in cloud from the storm system, which is just sitting to the west of Ireland at the moment.
00:21It's really got quite an elongated form to it and it's just on this southern flank where the isobars are really squeezed together.
00:27That's where the strongest winds are barreling into the Republic of Ireland at the moment, but strengthening through the afternoon across Northern Ireland.
00:34Already very gusty around western coast. Plenty of rain, but it is actually starting to ease.
00:40Many places seeing some drier spells through the afternoon. It might even brighten up in one or two locations and it isn't cold out there.
00:48Really quite a strange fear with that very warm air in place as temperatures get up to 14, 50, maybe even 16 Celsius.
00:54But it feels a bit cooler than that, though, because of the strength of the winds, which will be picking up through the afternoon into the evening time across Northern Ireland.
01:04There's the storm system clearing away to Northern Scotland through the evening, but it's on that southern flank where those isobars are really pinched together.
01:11That's where the strongest gusts are going to be overnight across parts of Northern Scotland in particular.
01:16Let's take it back to the afternoon, though. Look at the gust graphic and we can see those winds really picking up in the coming hours over parts of Northern Ireland.
01:25That's why we've got an amber warning in place here and then strengthening into Western Scotland through the evening time, showing signs of easing a little bit.
01:34But actually, we're going to keep some very strong winds well into tomorrow across Northern Scotland, especially those weather warnings then through the afternoon evening time.
01:44The amber warning for western parts of Northern Ireland and then for the northwest of Scotland into Wednesday morning gusts for Northern Ireland.
01:5360, 70, perhaps for a time, 80 mile an hour gusts.
01:57And for that amber warning in Scotland, gusts of 70 to 80 miles an hour, perhaps in exposed areas 90 miles an hour.
02:03Those kind of winds are likely to cause structural damage, create flying debris, bring power issues and obviously widespread transport disruption.
02:10Other warnings are in place as well. Yellow warnings covering a good part of England and Wales.
02:15But notice large parts of England are actually not in any warning areas.
02:19You may be wondering what all the fuss is about a blustery day.
02:22Yes, and a blustery night with a few showers here and there.
02:25But the main focus, as I say, those strong winds, which will continue over Northern Scotland,
02:31continuing to bring the threat of further disruption through the night and indeed even into Wednesday.
02:37With a very windy night to come, even though there'll be some lengthy clear spells, it's not going to be a cold night.
02:42Yes, cooler than the previous night, but temperatures still holding up at 8 to 10 degrees Celsius.
02:48Now, for many, Wednesdays are a bright and blustery day.
02:50There should be some sunshine around.
02:51A fair few showers for western parts of England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
02:55It's still pretty gusty.
02:57But even though the storm system is pulling away, there is still the likelihood of further damaging gusts,
03:03particularly for Shetland, where it stays very windy all day.
03:06But right across Scotland, Met Office yellow warnings remain in place for a good part of Wednesday.
03:12Of course, the storm system moves through likely to weaken structures.
03:14So when it stays windy, still a continued risk of disruption, travel disruption,
03:19but a continued risk of further structural damage and power issues also.
03:25As I said, though, for many, just a bright and blustery day.
03:28Still quite mild, not as mild as today, but these temperatures are still above average for the time of year.
03:33Probably feeling a bit more pleasant than today with those winds a little bit lighter.
03:37And they will continue to ease down those winds, even across Scotland, through Wednesday evening.
03:41Not becoming light, but just easing down.
03:45Notice further rain to come into the northwest also.
03:47But elsewhere, at least a little drier, which will give at least a brief respite from the heavy rain.
03:53But it looks like there's further wet weather to come towards the end of the week.
