00:00Extreme heat warnings are in place for much of England and Wales for most of this week.
00:06And this morning we issued a red warning.
00:09Health implications are significant for not just the vulnerable, but anyone really in the red warning area.
00:17Temperatures are going to be record breaking.
00:18It's not just about the numbers, the temperatures.
00:21It's about the humidity making it very difficult to sleep at night.
00:24It's going to be exceptionally warm by day and by night for a number of days.
00:29And that cumulative effect is likely to have significant impacts on people's health and also on the infrastructure.
00:36So the red warning is in place for Wednesday and Thursday, along with this broad amber warning covering most of
00:42England and Wales.
00:44For today and Tuesday, there is an amber warning in place, slightly smaller area.
00:50The temperatures are going to be gradually building over the next few days, getting over 30 Celsius today and then
00:56into the mid to high 30s by the time we get to Wednesday and Thursday.
01:01Nothing like as hot further north.
01:03We've got some showery rain across Scotland and Northern Ireland, quite pleasant in northwest Scotland.
01:07And skies brightening generally across the north of Northern Ireland with sunny spells here too.
01:11The possibility of one or two isolated heavy thundery showers over Wales and southwest England, but very hit and miss.
01:17Most places will stay dry and in the sunshine, those temperatures getting back up over 30 degrees Celsius and probably
01:25peaking somewhere around the Bristol area.
01:2833, maybe 34 degrees Celsius.
01:30Always a bit cooler around the coast.
01:32As I said, much cooler across Scotland and Northern Ireland.
01:35It's much more pleasant here, particularly in the sunny spells through the afternoon across the northwest.
01:39The showery rain should clear from eastern Scotland.
01:41Still the possibility of a heavy thundery shower or two moving across England and Wales, but heading out into the
01:47North Sea.
01:48Most places becoming dry with clear spells overnight.
01:51Just a small chance of showers coming up across the far southeast.
01:55It is going to be a very warm night.
01:58That humidity, as I said, that's a key factor with this hot spell.
02:02Keeping the temperatures up, making it really muggy, really humid.
02:06Very difficult night for sleeping.
02:07Some of the urban areas across the south may have a tropical night.
02:10That's where temperatures stay above 20 degrees Celsius.
02:13A bit more comfortable for sleeping again with the cooler air across northern Scotland.
02:17But even in southern Scotland, across northern England, temperatures likely to stay in the high teens.
02:22So, again, difficult conditions for sleeping here.
02:25Lots of hot, hazy sunshine to come then on Tuesday.
02:28Again, small chance of a shower early on across the southeast.
02:31Some showers possible across the northern Isles as well.
02:34But most places dry.
02:36Most places seeing a lot of sunshine.
02:38Of course, we're starting the day in the high teens or even over 20 degrees Celsius.
02:43So, the temperature is just building and building.
02:45The warmer air wafting a little further north as well.
02:48So, more widely up over 30 degrees Celsius on Tuesday up into parts of northern England.
02:54And in this zone, across the Midlands, into southeast Wales, down to southeast England, 35, 36, 37 degrees Celsius is
03:02likely.
03:02Obviously, UV levels are going to be high or very high as well as the temperatures and, as I said,
03:09the humidity.
03:09That will lead into another hot and humid night.
03:12And, if anything, temperatures higher again on Wednesday.
03:15That's when the red warning comes into play.
03:18And that's because temperatures are likely to get to 36, 37, maybe 38, 39 degrees Celsius.
03:25And 40 Celsius isn't completely off the cards either.
03:27So, we are seeing these peak in temperatures across this zone, across central parts of England, southeast Wales and southern
03:34England in particular.
03:35As always, the coasts will be a little bit cooler and it will be a little bit fresher further north
03:40across Scotland and northern Ireland.
03:41Thursday, again, those temperatures likely to get into the high 30s across parts of central and eastern England, perhaps into
03:49parts of southeast Wales.
03:51Again, these temperatures record-breaking and they are likely to cause both health and infrastructure issues.
