19 February - National Afternoon Forecast presented by Alex Deakin
Transcript
00:00Hello, thank you for joining me for your latest update from the Met Office.
00:03Most places, quite a bit drier than they were yesterday.
00:07Still fairly cloudy, still fairly chilly.
00:09The satellite picture shows a lot of clouds smothering the UK.
00:13Also, this beautiful swirl way out in the Atlantic.
00:16That's a deep area of low pressure.
00:19It's quite intense at the moment, but it's going to weaken a little bit,
00:22and these weather fronts will approach and bring us some rain,
00:25but also some milder conditions as we head through Friday.
00:28In between, we've got a bit of a ridge trying to build in,
00:32which will bring some drier weather.
00:34We had quite a bit of rain yesterday, still quite a wet start this morning.
00:38That rain is continuing to fizzle out, but dampened drizzly through parts of southern Scotland and northeast England.
00:43And our weather front is bringing more rain back to Northern Ireland
00:46and into western Scotland through the rest of the day.
00:49A bit of drizzle may affect Pembrokeshire, Devon and Cornwall for a time as well.
00:52But a good chunk of the country, certainly the areas that were wettest through the course of yesterday,
00:57a lot drier today over the Midlands and much of southern England.
01:00Still a brisk and fairly cold wind nagging in from the North Sea along some of these North Sea coasts
01:06and a bit breezy in the southwest as well.
01:09But here we could get temperatures 9, 10 degrees.
01:11Elsewhere, we're only looking at 4 or 5 Celsius under that thick cloud,
01:14and it certainly feels cold with that breeze blowing around the coast of Scotland in particular.
01:20Now, as we go through the evening, we'll continue to see the outbreaks of rain working across Scotland
01:23with a bit of snow over the very tops of the mountains.
01:26It turns a bit drier for a time in Northern Ireland,
01:29but then that next weather system we saw earlier starts to move in,
01:32so things turning wetter again here.
01:34Bar the odd little bit of light rain and drizzle,
01:37most of England and Wales actually having a dry night.
01:40A fair bit of cloud around, and that should stop the temperatures falling too far.
01:44If we get any breaks in the cloud, we could see some pockets of frost in rural spots.
01:48But most places, certainly most towns and cities with that cloud likely to stay a few degrees above freezing.
01:54Still probably feeling quite cold and quite grey to start with on Friday,
01:58but generally a dry start, certainly in eastern England.
02:01But further west, we've got this zone of rain moving through.
02:03It clears from Northern Ireland.
02:04Could be quite heavy for a time over Northern England,
02:07perhaps into parts of Wales and southern Scotland,
02:09easing a little as it dribbles its way to East Anglia and Southeast England.
02:14But most of us will see a spell of rain, followed by a whole raft of showers.
02:18Now, these could be pretty lively through Friday afternoon.
02:20Across Northern England, parts of Wales and the Midlands,
02:22some heavy downpours should tend to zip through quite quickly,
02:26but accompanied by a strengthening and gusty wind.
02:29Some brighter spells between those showers coming in,
02:32but the wind is now definitely coming in more from the west or southwest,
02:36which is bringing the milder air.
02:38So temperatures quite a bit higher for Friday afternoon compared to today.
02:42Most places getting to double figures could easily get to 11 or 12
02:46and one or two places with a bit of brightness.
02:47So those temperatures are going to be 5, 6, 7 degrees above today's values.
02:54And that's what this map is showing.
02:56Temperatures of 4 o'clock compared to 4 o'clock today.
02:58Say some places 7 degrees above where they will be today.
03:02So it is getting milder.
03:03It may not feel hugely milder because of the gusty winds
03:07and this zone of heavy showers that zips through as we go through Friday evening,
03:12leaving behind some drizzly conditions and that brisk wind.
03:15And a messy picture then as we head into the weekend
03:18with weather fronts trying to move in.
03:21Quite a few isobars on the chart suggesting it is going to be quite breezy.
03:25So there will be further spells of rain to come in,
03:28exactly where those weather fronts lie.
03:30Difficult to pin down at this stage.
03:32But we all know that the winds coming in from the Atlantic will bring milder air.
03:37So that milder theme will continue certainly into Saturday.
03:40Warmer air sitting across the UK and generally staying on the mild side,
03:44certainly compared to what we've seen so far over recent weeks.
03:48Temperatures a good deal higher.
03:50So it's turning milder but not necessarily that much drier.
