Twelve people are homeless after a fire destroyed two houses in Penal on Tuesday.

One of the victims is attributing the blaze to an explosion of a leaking gas tank.

A tragedy was averted, as two of the occupants who are unable to walk, had to be dragged out from the burning structure.

Alicia Boucher has the details.

00:0876-year-old Margarine Williams says she was at home on Tuesday with her granddaughter, who decided to make a meal for her.
00:15So she took bread and this kind of long sausage and toast, and what kind of thing, and bring it to her.
00:22For the 50-70, it did no one as I started, it did a hit, boop!
00:27And as I hit, boop, the whole place had fire.
00:30So I was bison, I was born, I was in a car, but my son and I had to run because they pulled me.
00:36I can't walk, so they had to pull me out.
00:39Another occupant of the house who previously suffered a stroke is unable to walk and had to be rescued from the blaze as well.
00:47Two houses were destroyed, and according to Williams, so too were all of their belongings.
00:53It was real tough.
00:54Very, very, very.
00:55As for what they believe to have caused the fire, which has resulted in 12 people being homeless,
01:03Williams tells of an experience with similarities to others echoed in the past few months.
01:08Meanwhile, speaking at the American Chamber of Industry and Commerce Conference on Health and Safety,
01:24the TNT Fire Service says it is aware of what is taking place with the exploding tanks.
01:30According to Assistant Chief of the Northern Division, Noel Stewart,
01:33the fire service has disseminated information on social media concerning the proper storage and care for these LPG tanks.
01:41We are presently engaging with the suppliers of these tanks,
01:51and we are on board in terms of safety and what actions to be taken.
01:58He adds that it is important for homeowners who have the LPG tanks to have fire prevention mechanisms,
02:04such as fire extinguishers.
02:05So we also have that responsibility, not only the suppliers of these tanks, but the buyers,
02:16those who, the consumers, we have that responsibility to put things in place to safeguard ourselves.
02:24So it's a very serious situation that has gained the attention of the fire service.
