00:00The fire occurred shortly after 11 a.m. on Monday at a five-bedroom house located at Toe Hill Trace, Mount St. George, Tobago.
00:09Kelvin Joseph, 72, and his wife were not at home at the time of the blaze.
00:14Neighbour Marlon Tony told TV6 News he only moments before returned from work when he observed the fire.
00:22An appliance from the Roxburgh Fire Station responded to the fire.
00:25However, the entire house was gutted.
00:28I came from work and was coming from my mother's house to come out at my house.
00:34When I looked across, I saw my neighbour's house on fire.
00:37So I went across, calling him, and I wasn't getting on to him, so I tried breaking into the house to see if I see him.
00:44He wasn't there, so when I went inside, I saw the flame started in the kitchen close to a microwave, so I closed to a microwave, I understand.
00:52So I tried to push the microwave off, thinking that the microwave was on fire, that that caused the fire.
00:58Mr. Tony told TV6 News, after realising no one was home, he acted quickly in trying to subdue the flames, but had to later escape.
01:08Nothing was saved in the inferno.
01:10So by the time I pushed off the microwave, the fire just engulfed, and it was up inside the roof.
01:15So I'm not sure what caused the fire, but it's along the side where the microwave was.
01:18Area representative for Mount St. George Goodwood, Megan Morrison, visited the scene and spoke with affected resident, 72-year-old Kelvin Joseph.
01:29Ms. Morrison told the TV6 News all efforts would be made by the THA to assist the family.
01:35Well, I will have to communicate with all the bodies affiliated, you know, TEMA, the Division of Settlement, and everyone, even the Division of Social Protection, to be able to assist the family.
01:48We don't know what help can be had, whether restoration of the home or part thereof, but we will definitely keep in contact with the family, because the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
02:02And based on the fact that this family has been here, resident on this spot for so many years, it's so heartbreaking.
02:10Kelvin Joseph and his wife lost everything.
