00:00Residents of Tortuga village in central Trinidad believe a serial arsonist is
00:05responsible for a number of fires that have taken place in their community over
00:09the past two years. On Thursday afternoon, their iconic post office landmark was
00:15destroyed. Speaking with reporters on Friday, one resident said they live in
00:20fear that their own homes could be next and whether or not more than this
00:25century-old Roman Catholic Church could be next. Speaking anonymously, the
00:30resident says they suspect the person responsible is a mentally ill man who
00:35could target anyone at any time. However, the president of the Tortuga village
00:40council says there's no evidence for police to take action.
00:45There is only speculation that the fires are being set deliberately. We cannot
00:52pinpoint with no evidence. We cannot pinpoint or point fingers in any
00:56direction but it has been recurring for probably about two years now and it
01:03would have been a number of fires that would have hit deep into the fabric of
01:08Tortuga. A few weeks ago, the Tortuga Open Bible Church was destroyed by fire
01:14and two homes in the months before. Maharaj says the post office fire hit
01:19the community particularly hard since it has long been preserved and was a
01:24historical landmark visited as part of nature walks and tours carried out in
01:29Tortuga. We are trying our best to pinpoint what is the cause or who might
01:36be the cause. There are individuals who are speculating but without any concrete
01:42evidence or proof, we cannot say anything further. We hope that someone who would
01:46have seen what took place would come forward and be able to make a formal
01:51official statement.
