02:47The pair worked together for 55 years

02:5022 of which were on their hit show Chucklevision

02:54Barry passed away in 2018

02:57I'd never been on stage on my own before

03:00And I swear I saw him appear there

03:04And he put the thumbs up

03:05And I went on stage

03:07I was fine after that

03:08I find he's still with me now

03:10So I definitely believe in spirits

03:15I only moved in here about 18 months ago

03:36And there's times it sounds like there's a toilet flushing somewhere in the house

03:49And I suddenly noticed a little hand print on the wall

03:55And we hadn't had any kids here

03:57And up to then there'd never been anything like that wall

04:00It sort of made me feel a little bit spooky then

04:04Since then, we've heard little footprints here and there

04:30But we had a guest stay one night

04:34That there was somebody there in the room

04:36Walking backwards and forwards across the foot of the bed

04:38He was alright, he didn't get hurt

04:40But there's definitely something

04:42And I would really like to know what it is

06:06The bits we live in are the farm buildings

06:09And Paul is apparently living with paranormal activity in his home

06:20My wife said that she saw a figure come down the stairs almost like a ethereal mist

06:27I was in the living room

06:30And I see what she sees

06:34It was a definite shape of a figure

06:41I was massively sceptical

06:43And then a few times after that she was in bed

06:47And she'd wake up in the middle of the night, sit bolt upright

06:50And she'd say there's a figure standing at the end of the bed

06:54Could this apparition that Paul is experiencing in the house

07:05But I'm lost for an explanation

07:08So all my background is evidence based

07:14So I'd be absolutely intrigued to see what you can find

07:26There's been a murder or something like that around this area

07:31With that murder it's almost like

07:34Someone is looking for someone

07:47But they sound quite heavy

07:50I thought I was linking with a child

07:57But I think it's a small adult

08:02And it's definitely male

08:03But his energy feels quite negative

08:06But this darker energy of this darker person

08:12I've come to meet Dr. Scott Brewster, whose research has uncovered a terrifying history that could be linked to Paul's property

08:24Scott, I don't think we could have found a more beautiful spot on a more beautiful day, but I understand you've got a story to tell me that's not quite so lovely

08:42Well, the central character is Charles Pace

08:48Charles Pace, a notorious burglar and murderer in the 1870s

08:53He was only four foot eight

08:54Four foot eight?

08:56But he had a very big reputation

08:58His face featured in Madame Tussaud's Chamber of Horrors for over 100 years

09:01And had Jack the Ripper not come along as premier bogeyman a decade later

09:08Children might have been warned, if you don't behave, peace will get you

09:12Well, why was that? What did he do?

09:14Well, his career began in crime in Manchester in the 1870s

09:18He was a cat burglar

09:19But his criminal record escalated when he was intercepted at doing a burglary one evening

09:24And he shot the police officer trying to arrest him

09:27After that he fled to the relatively anonymous life in Sheffield

09:33We know he was a violent man

09:35But he was also somebody with a reputation for stalking women

09:38They actually struck up a friendship with the civil engineer Arthur Dyson

09:42And his wife Catherine

09:44He took an unhealthy and obsessive interest in Catherine

09:45He stalked the family and accosted Catherine threatening to blow her brains out

09:51And those of her husband

09:53And when her husband Arthur came out to investigate, peace shot Dyson

09:57Goodness me

09:59So what are his close connections to the area we're in?

10:04Why are you telling me all this?

10:06Well, it really relates to his time in Sheffield

10:10Where peace struck up a romantic relationship with a woman called Sue Rayner

10:15And Sue actually hailed from this very village

10:18They used to walk the local countryside here

10:21Including to a nearby barn where it was rumoured they were carrying on their, shall we say, romantic trysts

10:28But what are the chances that our property, the property we're investigating, it's a converted granary building

10:35Could it be the same building?

10:38It could be the self-same place

10:39Earlier on my walk around I could hear footsteps coming from upstairs

10:53So I'm going to check out the bedrooms

10:58And the atmosphere already feels different

11:02I feel really emotional in here

11:12Someone's trying to come through and talk to me

11:15And I just feel it's almost as if

11:21This friendly spirit is warning

11:25The homeowner

11:27About the negativity coming

11:29From outside within

11:31And it's almost like you can feel the energy

11:45Coming into this room

11:50But as it comes into this house

11:52I do feel it would turn around

11:55And I do feel it would look

11:57Towards the bed

11:59He's trying to find somebody

12:07So how did Charles Peace ultimately get caught?

12:11The police had tracked him down to this area

12:13And they discovered him in bed one day

12:15With Sue

12:17She gave them the name Mrs Bailey

12:19Peace gave the name John Ward

12:20And he escaped through a window

12:23In October 1878

12:25He was finally arrested

12:27Committing a burglary

12:29He nearly killed the police officer

12:31He was apprehended

12:33And his life of crime had finally come to an end

12:45I just feel a man

12:46He was very sinister

12:49And you know the longer I sit in here

12:52I'm getting pressure around my stomach

12:55And around my neck

12:59So I don't know how he passed

13:01But I certainly feel this pressure around my neck

13:05And my stomach area

13:07So why might Charles come back here?

13:10Well Sue played a role in his eventual demise

13:15Because after he was arrested

13:17He was actually charged and convicted

13:20Under the false name John Ward

13:22That he'd given the authorities when he was discovered nearby here

13:25But to save her own skin

13:27Sue actually revealed his true identity as Charles Peace

13:30And then Peace was taken back to Sheffield to stand trial for the murder of Arthur Dyson

13:36And in 1879 he was hanged

13:40So I imagine that he didn't have very fond memories of this particular area

13:46And of course Sue, the local lady who brought about his downfall really

13:51I think he would be coming back to that property with a spirit of vengeance
