01:29So we're just outside of Sirencester in Gloucestershire, heading to our next location.
01:34Yeah.
01:34You know this whole area, which is a really important Roman settlement.
01:37And it's interesting because the ghosts of Roman soldiers are seen quite often around Sirencester.
01:42The team have been called in to investigate reports of paranormal activity by the owner of this 17th century six-bedroom manor house in the Cotswolds.
01:54I can't wait to find out whether my house is actually as haunted as everybody says it is.
02:01It's the home of legendary interior designer and TV personality Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen.
02:10We moved from London to the Cotswolds about 15 years ago.
02:14I was filming in India at the time.
02:17My wife found this house on the internet, came to have a look at it, and sort of more or less bought it then and there.
02:23And then rang me and said, I hope you don't mind, I've bought a house.
02:27By the way, in brackets, it's kind of haunted.
02:32I've never personally had any kind of paranormal experience in the house.
02:38But this is a very, very busy house.
02:41This is a crazy house most of the time.
02:44There are people all over it.
02:45The whole family is here.
02:46And the thing that's really weird is that there's always one or two of them who suddenly start saying, oh, my goodness me, did you see that?
02:53Did you hear that?
02:55Cecile, my oldest daughter, she definitely feels very strongly that she's had moments where things have happened which she cannot in any way explain.
03:05So it's near constant that people are reacting to unexplained phenomena.
03:14One of the weirdest things that ever happened was just after last Christmas, and it was next door neighbour and her kid called Ryder, who was about three or four.
03:23And Ryder and I were sitting on this sofa, and Ryder was looking over my shoulder right the way through the hall into the dining room.
03:31And he started kind of pointing and saying, red man, big red man, who's the big red man?
03:37And I was sort of saying, that's probably Father Christmas.
03:41But he still kept saying, red man, red man.
03:44And I looked round quite slowly, and I couldn't see anything at all.
03:51And I thought that was really extraordinary.
03:55That felt really weird.
03:57It would be absolutely extraordinary if the team got Proust.
04:01Something that does give me a sense that there is someone or something trying to leave a bit of a message from the other side.
04:12So, Jane, are you excited for this case?
04:15Yeah, I am actually.
04:16I am intrigued about this one.

04:22Medium Ian insists he's told nothing about the case, so he knows he's receiving a genuine spirit message.

04:37But there's just something to do with a child.
04:40It sounds crazy me saying this, but there's also men in black.

05:37Wow, this property is absolutely stunning.
05:40It's beautiful.
05:42There's a lot going on here.
05:43There's certainly something that's drawn my attention to this room to my left, what looks
05:48like a small dining room.
05:52There's some distant sounds, some noises.
05:56It's a child crying.
06:02It's really funny, because this feels like a beautiful family home.
06:06But there's just something to do with ministers or something like that.
06:14I'm seeing headstones.
06:16It's almost got like a church vibe to it.
06:22I'm meeting historian Robin Shukba.
06:24He's invited me to a piece of land less than a mile from the house.
06:28The house that we're investigating, you should say, is Robert's House.
06:34And I'm assuming that the name has some kind of significance to its history.
06:38It most certainly does, yes.
06:40It was bought in about 1618 by John Roberts.
06:44And he was a remarkable man.
06:45He was the founder of the local Quaker group.
06:49So he was a very religious man.
06:50So the group of Quakers, John Roberts and his associates, I imagine they weren't looked
06:57upon too kindly locally.
06:59Well, the trouble is they were questioning all the fundamental bases of society.
07:04And they were really preaching a philosophy that would have taken away the sources of income
07:10from senior church figures, but also landowners and politicians.
07:14And so, not surprisingly, those establishments took very unkindly to this and persecuted them
07:21in a very considerable way.
07:22Gosh, can you give me some examples?
07:24How were they persecuted?
07:25I can.
07:26They held meetings to worship in their own way, which were often raided by the local authorities.
07:34They were arrested for things like blasphemy and sort of trumped up charges of the kind,
07:39all those sorts of things.
07:40And this happened to Roberts himself.
07:41He was imprisoned at least twice.
07:45It's really strange.
07:47Look how I'm holding my hands in prayer position.
07:52And that just automatically happened.
07:57There is a gentleman here now.
08:00And he's wearing a hat very similar to mine.
08:05He's all in black.
08:06And he's welcoming, he's saying, friends, come forward, friends, come forward.
08:16But the name of John is quite significant.
08:20Now, I don't know whether he's got a connection to the property or he visited the property,
08:24but his energy is certainly here.
08:25I can hear them crying again.
08:37It's really strange.
08:40There's definitely somebody singing upstairs.

08:59God, my heart's racing on this land and it's really long.
09:02And there's rooms all over the place.

09:08Something out my peripheral vision to my right scared me.
09:12It just shot straight across.
09:14It's this black figure.
09:15It's almost like John or somebody watching what we're doing.
09:21I've come to meet Lawrence's daughter, Cecile,
09:24who has experienced firsthand some of the house's paranormal activity.
09:29Hi, Cecile.
09:30Hiya.
09:30Hi.
09:31So, you guys live in this very historic home.
09:35I mean, it's got hundreds of years of history, hasn't it?
09:38What are your paranormal experiences in the house?
09:41I'd say my main, most unnerving experience would be when my eldest was a baby
09:48and I'd put him down in the corner bedroom,
09:52because there was a cot in there at that time,
09:53and I sort of stepped outside the door and left it five minutes.
09:56And sort of maybe halfway through that, while he was crying,
09:59and I heard this really distinctive, um, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh sound,
10:04and he went absolutely silent.
10:07Obviously, I then went back in again to make sure there wasn't anyone in there with him.
10:10There wasn't.
10:11and all of the windows were closed so it wasn't like i could have heard someone shushing from
10:16outside how did that make you feel i think i went like white as a sheet and i felt a sort of
10:22coldness the idea of leaving a child in a room with a spirit that seemingly could be soothing
10:29and comforting him but it could also be quite malevolent was the most distressing thing i think
10:35still to this day i really struggle to go back into that that room
10:38something's happened in this room you can just feel the energy in this room
10:48has changed from the landing area it gets colder in here
10:57and i've got this overwhelming smell of perfume
11:00there again there's this shadow this a shadow's just gone across this window
11:11and shot there
11:14into this cupboard here
11:18i just feel that there's a female this lady
11:23for some reason seems to hover in this room there's a connection with this lady and
11:30and there's something to do with a child
11:34historian robin has told me lots about john roberts but now i want to know more about the quaker meetings
11:40that took place i'm curious were there any women ever involved in these meetings and in this movement
11:46there most certainly were there was a rather wonderful woman called elizabeth hewlings who
11:50was a local midwife undoubtedly had played some part in in robertson's own children's births so she
11:57was a great friend to the family and she along with a group of other people were meeting in this house
12:04and in came armed representatives of the local lieutenant and they shepherded these people all up to the top of
12:12the stairs and pushed each of these people down the stairs in the house
12:18most of them were okay but elizabeth was not she was extremely badly injured and she died of her injuries
12:26just a few days later oh my goodness
12:32and this wonderful piece of slightly spooky ground is the burial ground for the quakers this land was
12:39given to them by robert's family because they weren't allowed to be buried anywhere else
12:44and there are 68 people buried in this top land all of them local quakers my goodness i'm very
12:51conscious that we're standing on top of many of those wonderful people so shall we head off let's
12:56do that fascinating thank you it's a pleasure

13:09why can i hear crying it's almost as if this lady's trying to comfort a child
13:17she's got this baby in her arms i can see her putting it back down and then drifting off
13:27how did lawrence respond and react to these experiences there was lots of other answers to
13:33what it would be that aren't potentially spirits or ghosts in a way i'd be quite tempted to have
13:40him proven wrong you know it would be quite um satisfying have you experienced anything else in
13:44the home my sister said that she once thought she saw a boy in the uh dog room downstairs next to the
13:52kitchen can you describe any more what did she see exactly she said it was sort of a youngish boy um
13:58maybe eight or nine years old i think it did unsettle her quite a lot um i don't know that he
14:03was all together you know uh alive seeming it was quite a quite a gruesome one yeah
14:13look wow that's unbelievable so that's telling me that somebody's walking across this landing area
14:21and we need to find out who that can be this house is really really active there's a lot of history
14:34finished with our initial investigation it's now time for us all to meet the homeowner
14:39do you find anything good oh my god so much yeah fascinating history yeah oh yeah how was it oh wow
14:44this property is absolutely beautiful uh there's so much going on in there what do you want to
14:49know whose house this is yeah go on this is lawrence llewellyn bowen of the interior designer that's
14:54exactly wow that's so kind of you i am the interior designer anyway welcome to my humble home thank you
15:01it's absolutely beautiful stunning property and it is active there's things going on is there yeah
15:07well you see this is the whole thing we have people coming around they see things their eyes are
15:12kind of roving around the room as i'm talking to them but i have never seen anything my wife
15:17jackie's never seen anything so we want you to lift the lid on the house well do you know what i've
15:21been digging into the history of this beautiful property and it's fascinating so i've got lots to
15:25tell you shall we go in and begin our spirit trigger session brilliant this way thank you
15:30no not there just joking so yes lawrence i believe you do know some of the history of the house
15:45don't you so yeah in a way that's the problem because you get sort of little snippets that people
15:50keep telling you but a lot of it's kind of not very well brought together you don't get the whole
15:54picture well you will know john roberts of course he was quite a well-known quaker who lived here in
16:01the house hence the name roberts house he had one member of his group a lady her name was elizabeth
16:07hewlins and she was a really well respected midwife in the area and they held meetings here at the house
16:13which were often raided and there was one particular raid in which the group were actually pushed down
16:21stairs here and she later died off those injuries really what a tragic waste the burial plot there
16:28there are 68 quakers buried there and elizabeth humans is one of them she was buried there in 1670
16:35so we know she's there wow let's call out let's record the audio and see whether we get any responses

17:25john roberts there's an irony here because of course the quakers were pacifists they didn't
17:29actually agree with warfare but he was in oliver cromwell's army and they did wear red
17:35well this this gentleman's military and he stood there warming his buttocks against the fire looking
17:42this way
17:45it's fading in and out so he's quite weak but

18:16it seems lawrence is not receptive to the paranormal world and that's probably the reason he's never
18:23seen or heard anything himself so i have an idea on how to get this spirit trigger session going well
18:29guys i had a great chat with cecile and she's had lots of paranormal experiences here she's actually
18:35seen a female apparition which may or may not be this elizabeth that uh you mentioned um i think
18:41it'd be great uh to maybe get her in here to join us and also your wife jackie could have been a moral
18:47support for her lawrence's eldest daughter cecile has told us she's heard a disembodied voice in one
18:54of the bedrooms which tells us she's more sensitive to spirit her returning to the bedroom with ian

19:08how do you feel now you're back in this bedroom it just makes me feel so sort of chilly and itchy and
19:15a bit uncomfortable in here yeah well do you know something what fascinates me is when i did my walk
19:21around as soon as i walked in in that little alcove there i saw a lady that is interesting because there
19:28used to be a cot in that out so there was a cot in there there was a cot in there wow that was the cot
19:34i left albion so i think what would be interesting is let's try and make communication with her and
19:38find out if we can make contact if we can find out who she is okay i'm using an alice box the
19:46psychokinetic itc device that allows spirits access to a memory bank of thousands of words helping them
19:53to produce responses to questions so the lady if you're here and you're the lady i saw earlier today

21:01no i'm fine yes i think cecile's quite sensitive to spirit oh that's when you should say that i was just
21:08about to say the same empathical i think so yeah are you drawn to any part of this room if you look
21:16around that window you're drawn to that window yeah i don't know why walk over to that window for me
21:25and when you walk over there what do you feel you need to do turn around turn around yeah so turn
21:31around for me right and now what what are you i'm looking over there again that's amazing so she's
21:40walked you forward to turn around to look where the cot was oh i feel that they're like dingly sponginess
21:49again okay i want to go on this side i want to go to this bit right okay stand
22:01stand and you're standing so she knows you're there right okay i just like i i just i'm rooted
22:09to the spot my legs feel all kind of like a little bit jellied very tingly um and my breasts are
22:17prickling like when a baby starts crying it's very weird she's getting all of these maternal sensations
22:25during this i'm feeling a bit uncomfortable actually okay feel a bit antsy and a bit um this a bit
22:30distressed are you happy to continue um i'm not sure if you want to you want to stop yeah i think
22:38i want to stop is that okay because it's okay you at the end of the day it's how you feel right
22:43yeah guys we're just going to stop this experiment because cecile feels really uncomfortable okay
22:49yeah no problem after a clear indication of contact with a spirit for cecile we all return to the living
22:55me are you you're all right yeah no you look very flush no i am a bit it's not all makeup yes you did
23:02very well that was really significant contact and communication so i think from the evidence that we've
23:09gathered so far this evening with your help i feel quite strongly that elizabeth is here but of course
23:14hopefully she'll communicate a bit more with us and we'll gather some more information for you and
23:19more evidence of that but we also need to work out who the gentleman is is this john roberts or someone
23:26else once lawrence and his family leave for the evening i take jane and ian into the nerve center
23:35to see how i've set up the cameras for tonight's investigation we've got a large cotswold stone manor
23:41house and i've placed eight cameras across this entire property so camera number one i've positioned in the
23:47kitchen now this is looking directly at that utility area and it's also where hermione cecile's sister
23:54saw the apparition of a little boy camera number two is located in the dining room area the third camera
24:01i've positioned in the lounge area now this is the room that we did spirit triggers and that's where i
24:06saw the gentleman near the fireplace camera number four is on the stairs the fifth camera is upstairs and
24:13this is in the corner bedroom this is the room where cecile heard that shushing sound was pretty
24:18terrified during spirit triggers and that's where i sensed a female the sixth camera is also in one of
24:24the upstairs bedrooms and the seventh and eighth infrared cameras are positioned on the top floor
24:29so i think tonight's investigation is going to be a challenging one where would you like to start
24:33well do you know what given that cecile almost seemed to be channeling you know bringing forward
24:41the energy of elizabeth in that bedroom i'd quite like to go in there actually and just see if there's
24:45another woman a mother maybe she'll speak to me it's a good idea so whilst you're doing that perhaps uh
24:51ian and i sit in the living room area and try to communicate with john yeah yeah all right let's get cracking
25:03while ian and barry head to the living room i'm going to do some scrying an ancient form of divination

28:19near the door what's going on who are you can you tell me your name
28:24what happened upstairs almost instantly i felt like i could see a woman and she was sad she was
28:41overwhelmingly sad for these babies i just kept thinking babies and then when i closed my eyes i
28:49could actually see still babies oh god she will have experienced that here because the roberts
28:56family lost but they had stillborn children oh but also the next thing i asked her was
29:04you were murdered here is that why you're still here and they've just said killed oh my god could
29:08this be elizabeth has she came forward now through scrying connected to you and i've brought her
29:13downstairs without knowing yeah the lack of contact from john roberts could mean
29:18he is here but only in residual form whereas elizabeth it seems is communicating directly flowers flowers
29:31their graveyard is specific to them really small thank you so much serious thank you

30:01the spirit we think is elizabeth seems to be guiding us upstairs so we continue our investigation
30:09back in the room where jane had such a strong connection with her we start by using my structured
30:14light sensor camera that can pick up spirits and apparitions the naked eye can't so that area there
30:20cecile walked over to and she was looking into this direction she was drawn there jane there walk over right
30:26right tight up to that corner jane this section is where the cot was cecile's newborn yeah she says
30:32she put it in there quiet oh quiet there's a figure word next to jane oh my god jane yeah
30:40there is somebody stood next to you okay oh my god there's another one there's two you're being
30:47there's one on either side i'm freezing i'm absolutely freezing one on the bed next to you on your left
30:53is pointing outside elizabeth is that you you're here with me bones bones what bones elizabeth

31:47surname west was buried at the quaker burial site please yeah i'll check you now
31:55this is a jake oh yeah receiving go ahead yes so i've just checked and we have a daniel west that was
32:04buried in the burial ground on the 25th of june in the year 1700 wow wow that's amazing
32:12daniel west thank you sir cecile's sister hermione saw what she described as being a young boy
32:20in the utility room in the kitchen crazy that's amazing
32:23this is the barry yeah just to make you aware on camera one in the kitchen we have just had the
32:32light flashing and going off that's the motion activated led and that's in the utility area where
32:38that little boy's been seen let's go
32:43i'm wondering if there's a connection between this daniel west and the child spirit seen in the utility
32:48room by one of lawrence's family could it be that daniel is setting off the light sensor i've got
32:54something up my sleeve that may help us in our investigation i've picked up my buddy brian the
33:01robot oh okay cool he will not move unless he's gestured to is he working now he's working so let's
33:14call out to the child spirit that's been seen in here i'm assuming it's daniel okay okay i'll start

35:37does that mean that the child's happy here we're not getting any indication that they need any
35:42help of any kind that's not a trapped cry is it i don't think that's not a plea it's almost a playful
35:48yeah cool i think that elizabeth wanted to be acknowledged and her story to be recognized
35:55she was murdered here in this house and she wants people to know that yeah that's the justice
36:00so guys what do you suggest we can't say prayers really it's not appropriate but i think we do need
36:07to acknowledge everyone that's communicated with us this evening
36:11we believe the back bedroom is the epicenter of all the activity so we've returned there to pay our
36:20respects to everyone that's made contact tonight i'd like to thank the house and the people here
36:27for sharing your stories how sad they may be thank you for coming forward for giving us information
36:36to elizabeth in particular thank you for helping us all understand what happened here and the injustice
36:44as dawn breaks we invite lawrence and his family back to talk through what we found out during the
36:56investigation good morning good morning hello how did you all sleep very well yes we yes we did we did
37:03well we had a very very interesting evening did you yes and it was actually as a result of your
37:11experiences during the spirit trigger session that once you left us we decided as a team that
37:17i would go into that room on my own for a period and i decided to try a very traditional method of
37:25divination of communication and that's mirror scrying and actually i began to feel there was a tremendous
37:31sadness over loss i definitely felt that was being kind of placed upon me by someone else and the only
37:38logical person would be elizabeth so that was quite a powerful experience for me when i rejoined the
37:45boys down here it really did then seem to intensify and we wondered actually whether i had really opened
37:52up this channel of communication with elizabeth and maybe she had in fact followed me downstairs or because
37:58we started to get responses which really did seem to be from her right i'll play this yeah can you
38:04tell me your name communicate that was the first response very quickly followed by this one she will
38:16have experienced that here because the robert's family lost but they had still born children
38:21killed oh the next thing i asked her was you were murdered here is that why you're still here
38:27so we felt that maybe another reason she was here was justice injustice and that actually seemed to come
38:36through for us later what was that excuse my language died here and justice died here justice and then the
38:50last one keep it coming there was a stump upstairs please justice please just please died here justice
39:00please all in the space of 30 seconds we didn't know about elizabeth no we didn't at all well there
39:08were other responses that came through um literally moments after those i'll play them for you flowers
39:14flowers graveyard yeah we actually felt that we needed to get back in that bedroom because it is such
39:22a center for the energy and the spiritual activity in the house so we did that i was using what's called
39:30a structured light sensor camera the sls camera now if this camera detects anomalies spirit form it will
39:38show them as stick figures i want you to have a look at this there are two that appeared either side of jane
39:44oh yes look there's one there's one right there yeah yeah yeah the figure that appears almost seems
39:53to be standing where the cot was as if the bed isn't there yeah yeah i felt someone put their hand on my
40:00left shoulder so i turned around and then says ask who it is and i did and we got a clear female response
40:09which i didn't pick up on at the time let's just ask who did it elizabeth that was elizabeth she was
40:17telling us her name yeah who did it it was her she was comforting us or reassuring us i think we've
40:23got more than enough evidence here to convince us that her energy is very much in the house and then
40:29we had a word come out on the alice box again west and we had west and we knew that there was a
40:36daniel west the quaker buried at the burial plot during this part of the investigation i suddenly
40:41got called from nerve center saying barry the light that you placed in the utility room in the kitchen
40:48has turned on by itself and i was using a small robot toy which i called brian and we thought that
40:56by using this it might encourage the spirit of the little boy to play and oh my god it did right brian
41:03decided to do a little dance really moved around and then he got knocked over backwards what was
41:09interesting is when i picked him up he'd been switched off wow and what i'm about to play for you
41:17was recorded right but we heard it at the time and it sent us into something of a panicked frenzied
41:26stunned state so i i don't need to explain it to you you will hear it oh but a daniel vest is buried
41:36in the quaker burial plot
41:42it's i'm here and it's from a distance it was just so clear you know i've got children i knew the tone
41:50in the pitch i knew that was a child well obviously i mean you know whatever the emotion behind it it's
41:55it's a successful communication yes exactly you know whoever it was was actually they achieved being
42:02able to speak to you you you were there you achieved listening to them yeah that's right we were very
42:06lucky and privileged to receive such intelligent responses from spirit in your home the kind of
42:13bottom line for us is you know we didn't do anything to send them anywhere because that's not
42:19our place actually they belong here and as long as you're happy with them i could not agree more and
42:25what i love about all of this is the fact that i think we now feel as if we know people that have
42:33been here before you know we've always it's always been sort of slightly abstract and it's always obviously
42:38been there it's a very old house we know it's got a very long history but to actually link with some
42:42of these names i think it's been very very very lovely the big thing to come away from this is
42:48ever since that experience i've felt quite a large sort of sense of distress yeah that now sort of having
42:55almost a a greater understanding of where that might stem from yeah is a lot more comforting than
43:03the idea of they're not being spirits at all yeah yeah and i think times once their story's been told
43:09it's almost like it puts them at rest themselves because they've been listened they've had a voice
43:14haven't they john roberts i think he is residual energy i don't think that he was able to intelligently
43:20communicate with us during the evening i do feel that the responses we got were from elizabeth
43:27and daniel and i think that john's essence is here because he's part very much part of the fabric and
43:33the stonework well the big thing that we need to do is we've got to go and put some flowers on on the
43:38burial uh plot because i think elizabeth is very very specific about that i think that's nice i think
43:44that's lovely
43:52it's been another fascinating investigation that gave us some wonderful evidence
43:57evidence but who knows what the next case will bring
