00:00Oh, the fans are starting to get up out of the seats on their feet.
00:08Oh, look at that.
00:10Two pro circuit bikes.
00:12Who's it going to be?
00:14It is Jake Wymer with the spike hole shot on the bike number 12.
00:20His teammate, Josh Hansen, right there.
00:24The Frenchman, Gautier Paulin, his third.
00:27Great start for him, his first Supercross here in the U.S.
00:34So Wymer could not be in a better position right now.
00:38I think Josh Hansen's in a better position.
00:41You know, I mean, Wymer's supposed to win.
00:44Josh Hansen, it's teed up.
00:46Oh, there's Morris.
00:47He's getting aggressive early on the 116.
00:5015 laps here, a lot longer than what we've seen in the heat race of six laps.
00:54So you got the pro circuit guys, both riders up front.
00:59The Geico Honda guys right there with Kennard and Wharton.
01:02Oh, Hansen.
01:03Big mistake.
01:04Down he goes.
01:06He lose three, four, five, and a whole bunch of other positions maybe before he's done.
01:10Very easy to do that.
01:11Beginning of the race, the dirt's very loose.
01:14They fixed all the ruts.
01:16He was fine used to his rut in the heat race.
01:18Went in there.
01:19See you later.
01:20Wow.
01:20The track looks like there's so much traction, but in spots, it's so deceiving that it's
01:25slippery.
01:25Or there, like you said, they'll take all of the, you know, the bulldozers and stuff,
01:29and they'll smooth the track out, move that dirt around, and it's loose on top.
01:33Go in there, grab too much front brake, get a little too aggressive.
01:36And that hands over second place.
01:38Oh, once again, to Morris, and there's Kennard.
01:40Oh, Kennard taking him down.
01:42That's Paul in.
01:44Yeah, on the 321.
01:45Down goes Gautier.
01:47And I'm sure we've both hacked up the pronunciation of that, so we're going to, I'm sure this is
01:52a rider that we're going to get to know real well here throughout this West Coast.
01:55Well, I'm pretty sure he's on a star racing Yamaha.
01:57We can tell you that, all right.
01:58He's doing a good job for them here tonight.
02:00Watch this here.
02:01Oh, Kennard triples in.
02:03Steals the line.
02:04Oh, just hit his right foot.
02:07Down he went.
02:07Wow.
02:08Doesn't take much as Warden goes by as well.
02:11Welcome to the United States.
02:13Nicoletti on the 175.
02:15You see him working his way past Paul in as well.
02:20Well, you know, that's a big part of it, Jeff, because it is a whole different style of racing
02:24over here.
02:24It is.
02:24And you've got to get used to this supercrossing in a hurry.
02:27A lot more aggressive here than in Europe.
02:29I mean, it's, you know, you've got to get on it and get after it quick here.
02:33You do not want to give Jake Weimer too much, you know, too much breathing room.
02:37He's been in this position before.
02:39Okay, now let's watch these lap times.
02:40You see Trey Kennard there, 38 on that Geico Honda.
02:44He tripled into that turn.
02:45That's a, what, half a second, quarter of a second right there.
02:48We're going to keep an eye on the lap times because Kennard is really tripling through some
02:53of these sections.
02:54Right now, our top three riders are all right in the 59-second range.
02:58Weimer just turned a 58-8.
03:00Morris a 58-0.
03:03And Kennard 58-1.
03:04So that's over half a second faster.
03:07Kennard was that last lap.
03:08This is going to tighten up all three positions for the podium.
03:12And don't forget, Morris on the pro circuit bike just a year ago, not there now.
03:16That door opens up for a riders like Hansen.
03:19And here he sits now in second trying to catch Weimer.
03:22And Kennard's got to get up there because he's supposed to be a championship contender.
03:26But that says a lot about the team that Morris is on there, that Rockstar, Canada, Pet Food, Suzuki team.
03:31And this is a new effort.
03:33And Morris, certainly the guy for the job there, starting it off the right way.
03:40There you see Blake Wharton, Josh Hansen, and Han on the 49.
03:45That is fourth, fifth, and sixth.
03:47And that's Will Han, little brother of Tommy Han, who has had so much success.
03:52Will Han's been in the lights class here for a few years.
03:55But in qualified practice earlier today, this guy was on the gas.
03:58That's on that Troy Lee Honda.
04:00Yeah.
04:01Remember Wharton also snuck in as a last place finisher in as he got in at that ninth place position.
04:08You see Han, number 49, sporting the Steve McQueen design riding gear.
04:15Troy Lee doing an outstanding job of giving a cool look to the sport this year in honor of the legendary Steve McQueen.
04:24That's pretty cool, that tribute here.
04:26Well, and you can see here how Hansen had the opportunity, was challenging for the lead.
04:34Now maybe a little frustrated, maybe a little disappointed here after that fall.
04:39Lap time is not where it needs to be as the leaders are really, really putting it to him here.
04:45Canard closing in, and Weimer isn't too far out.
04:48No, he's not.
04:49Still in striking distance.
04:50I mean, we're just a quarter of the way through this race right now.
04:54Here we come.
04:54Let's see what the gap is.
04:5858-1, 58-9, and a 58-2.
05:01That's how Canard caught him.
05:02He was seven-tenths of a second quicker than Morris.
05:04And a 57-9 is the best lap for Canard.
05:09A little bit faster than anybody on the track.
05:11Well, what he's going to have to do, he's going to have to stop following Morris here
05:14and get, you know, how you get like that, you know, that zone where you just zone in on the rider's rear wheel
05:20and you start using the same line.
05:23You ride their race, so that's not good.
05:26Well, he's fast right through this section.
05:28See, he just scrubbed that triple.
05:29Watch what he does.
05:30He triples in here.
05:31There you go.
05:32Half a second right there, but did not go clean in the turn afterwards.
05:36No, you're right.
05:37And just watch how he's just staying right in the same racing line as Morris.
05:41And unless Morris makes a mistake, they could run around this for the next nine laps
05:46and end up in the same place.
05:47But we're not even halfway into this just yet, though, Jeff.
05:49So, I mean, he's got plenty of time to change that lineup here in a hurry.
05:52Now he's on it.
05:56Oh, more problems for Josh Hansen.
05:59Down again.
06:00And maybe somebody might have tried to take him out or something.
06:05You know, he moved to Australia.
06:06Didn't even take a cell phone with him.
06:09Didn't want to talk to anybody.
06:10Just wanted to focus on his racing.
06:12Wow.
06:13I'm not sure I could do that.
06:14No, I don't think so.
06:15Well, we have families, so that, of course, puts us in a different...
06:18Still, though, seems like it.
06:21So, he talked to his dad every night on the computer.
06:24His dad, of course, led to the motocross star in his own right.
06:27I'm telling you, in the early 80s, Donnie Hansen was the man.
06:32Supercross champion, motocross champion in the same year.
06:36All that stuff.
06:36Motocross, the nation's champions.
06:39Jake Weimer out front.
06:40Let's look at the gap.
06:41He's opened up a good one over Morris and Kennard.
06:44Yeah, he has.
06:45Well, right now, okay, I don't want to take anything away from Morris.
06:49He is really riding a fantastic race.
06:52Just when you thought that Kennard was going to pour it on here
06:55and just catch up to his back wheel and pressure him,
06:58instead of looking behind and slowing the race down,
07:01Morris has really put it together, and he's been right at 58 and a half seconds.
07:06Right in there, really consistent,
07:08where the other riders have been half a second slower, half a second faster.
07:11He looks great on that bike.
07:15I'm telling you, I am so proud of him.
07:17This is just another solid ride for Ryan Morris.
07:19He is riding really good and has a lot to prove.
07:22You know, like I said, a little bit of bitterness maybe.
07:25I don't know, but, I mean, he's impressing me for sure.
07:28Like you said, he's riding really good.
07:32Bike for six is between Searle and Tickle.
07:35Searle, another one of those riders on that orange number 19, the KTM bike,
07:40getting a welcome into the sport here.
07:42Got him.
07:43And there's a hello from Brock Tickle on the way.
07:45Wow, that's like a crystal ball.
07:47That was perfect timing, Ralph.
07:48Yeah, Tommy Searle out of England,
07:51one of the world championship contenders for the last few years.
07:54And this is his first attempt at Supercross here.
07:57And he's a veteran in the motocross world,
07:59but in Supercross, he's a rookie.
08:01I think he has a lot of talent here,
08:02and there's a lot to be learned in these first, you know,
08:05first few races here.
08:06And the most important thing I would have to say,
08:08I mean, obviously you want to win or be on the podium and all that.
08:11I think the most important thing for Tommy Searle
08:13and that KTM team is for him to ride every lap of the main,
08:17okay, gain the experience.
08:19Because if you crash in the first lap, second lap,
08:21and you don't get the experience of that 15 laps,
08:24you really miss out on it.
08:25That's what he needs is Supercross experience.
08:28Battle for second, heats up as Kinnard goes inside.
08:33Using that triple, gets inside of the 116 of Morris
08:37as we pass the halfway point.
08:39Now you got, if you're Trey Kinnard right now,
08:42you have to, I mean, you have to put your head down and go.
08:45Make the best laps that you've made all weekend long
08:48to have a shot at the main event.
08:52Here we go.
08:53This is the triple here.
08:55Scrubs and triple, watch as he comes in.
08:56He gets on the brakes, he gains a little bit there.
08:59Wow.
09:00See, he hops over.
09:01There's a little hop and then four jumps.
09:03He hops over the first jump and triples in.
09:06That is a tough section.
09:09On TV, it might be hard to see,
09:10but I'm telling you right now, that is very, very hard.
09:13Well, in RC, we were talking about he's got to put his head down.
09:16He ran a 57.9 on that last lap.
09:18Weimer had run a 58.1 and Morris a 58 flat.
09:22He is definitely the quickest guy out there right now
09:25with that 57.9.
09:26You see Weimer take a little look over.
09:29He knows that his toughest competition for this championship
09:32is going to be Weimer.
09:34He just looked to his right there,
09:36seeing that Weimer's in the second.
09:37So now it really is.
09:38Okay, I know where he's at.
09:40Focus on me.
09:41Don't worry about where Trey's at.
09:42I need to ride a mistake-free race,
09:46hit all my lines perfectly.
09:51Two tenths quicker that lap.
09:53Two tenths, and Weimer has, or I'm sorry,
09:55Kennard has the potential.
09:57He's done a 57.9,
09:59which is about a half a second faster than what he did last one,
10:01but the track's probably gone away.
10:02It has gone away,
10:03but I'm telling you,
10:04the one-tenth, the two-tenths is not going to get the job done.
10:07To catch Weimer, he's so, you know,
10:09he's so far behind.
10:10He's almost four seconds.
10:11He's going to need a full second of lap here.
10:14So that's Wharton on the 21.
10:17He's battling with Han on the 49.
10:20That's a fight for Ford.
10:22And you talk about two interesting personalities.
10:24I don't want to stray too far away from the racing here
10:26as we're locked in this heated battle,
10:28but I'm telling you,
10:29both of these guys are two of the coolest young riders
10:32you will ever meet.
10:33Their personalities on these guys, man, I'm telling you.
10:36And here it comes on.
10:37He's charging hard on the 49.
10:39Uh-oh, a little.
10:41Oh, and Wharton took the line away from him.
10:42A little break check.
10:44Not anything aggressive,
10:46but definitely by slowing down there into the off-camber.
10:51Wow, did you see Han just tripled onto that tabletop?
10:54Wow, that, I don't think I've seen a Lights guy do that.
10:57No, hey, if he's in the right position,
10:59if he does that next lap around,
11:01he's going to go flying past Morton
11:02because that is what we've talked about
11:04throughout the broadcast in our 450 race at Supercross
11:07is that that, I think,
11:09is the most important rhythm section out there
11:11where you can make up.
11:12It's probably a full second right there.
11:14He's lost a lot of time through here, though, Jeff.
11:16He makes it up in that one section, right?
11:19Yeah, like he's in Will Hunt.
11:21He's pretty talented, man.
11:24He's pretty creative, you know,
11:25as far as the track and doing things.
11:27His bike is good and fun to watch.
11:30Let's see brother Tommy here.
11:32Triple down.
11:33Wow.
11:34But he's really giving it up
11:35around the starting line,
11:36the whoop section,
11:37especially the first set of whoop.
11:39Oh, here's a move to the inside.
11:40Oh, here we go.
11:42Oh.
11:43Didn't double out of the turn.
11:44Let's see how close he has.
11:46Well, he triples in here
11:47and keeps it fairly close,
11:49but definitely.
11:50Wow, look at that, Ricky.
11:52That's a good move.
11:52That's unbelievable.
11:53And it's not even looking like
11:54it's too hard for him.
11:55No.
11:56I mean, he's taking the rutted out
11:57section of the turn.
11:59Commitment, though.
11:59When he gets that rutt, Ralph,
12:01he sets down in there.
12:02He hammers the throttle.
12:03And if he makes a mistake,
12:05he ain't going to be able to let off.
12:06The way he was doing that,
12:07leaning back, seat bouncing it,
12:09the right grip is twisted
12:10all the way back.
12:12Battle for 10th is between
12:13Jeff Valeski,
12:14who holds position right now
12:15in the blue bike
12:16and the white and blue riding gear
12:17into the 801.
12:18He's got Sean Borgenhagen
12:19right behind him on the 63.
12:21And these are the two guys
12:22that battled it out in the LCQ
12:24and they ride themselves
12:25amongst each other,
12:26battling in the main event.
12:29Hey, I'll take it.
12:29Got the better of that battle.
12:31Yeah, well, I'll take it.
12:32If you go into the,
12:33if you have to go through the LCQ
12:34and both these riders are
12:35right there inside the top 10,
12:37right around 10th,
12:38I'll take it after a night like that.
12:40Our leader is working through traffic.
12:42We'll see if this comes into play.
12:44That's Weimer.
12:45He's caught the backside
12:45of Chris Gossler.
12:48Former Pro Circuit rider there.
12:50I believe they were teammates
12:51a couple years ago.
12:53Or at least they battled
12:54on the same track.
12:56Weimer was riding a different brand,
12:58but right now he has got it going.
13:01He is riding a perfect race.
13:03It's still three and a half second gap,
13:05or at least that's the finish line
13:06that time around with Trey Kennard.
13:08And look at that.
13:08That is a really cool whoop section
13:10because you come through
13:11and you shift up before that triple.
13:13So much speed.
13:14And these guys just lift the front wheel,
13:16ride the rear wheel over
13:17about the last five or six whoops
13:19into that triple.
13:20And you can jump through them.
13:21You can blitz them,
13:22like get on top of them,
13:24wheelie through them.
13:24There's Kennard.
13:28He's into the traffic as well.
13:29He's catching up to the backside
13:30of Phil Nicoletti right now.
13:34Trey's still hammering hard,
13:36just can't quite make the time up.
13:38Well, and you see right here,
13:39Gossler really needs to be pulling
13:42further out of the race line
13:44than what he is for these leaders here.
13:46Because right now,
13:47Gossler is running way back in 17.
13:49But Jake Weimer,
13:52I got to believe,
13:53is going to be very,
13:54very happy with his performance tonight.
13:56Not just the fact that he won
13:57and has a points lead
13:58going on to Chase Field
14:00next week in Phoenix.
14:01But boy, Ricky,
14:02it looks like if you set up your plan
14:04of what you wanted to happen here tonight,
14:05come out,
14:06run good practice,
14:07win your heat,
14:08get a great start in the main,
14:09dominate the main,
14:10you really set yourself up
14:11in this short championship run.
14:13It looks like he is so programmed,
14:15even from his heat race.
14:16I mean, it was perfect.
14:18Every jump he did was perfect.
14:19Every turn he did was perfect.
14:20And now here,
14:21it's just like it's so programmed.
14:23Yeah, he looks so great on the bike,
14:25his riding position and all that.
14:27Except for that little slight mistake there.
14:29Totally in control.
14:31Yeah, yeah, totally in control.
14:32And that is a good feeling
14:34to start the season that way.
14:36This is really good right here.
14:37The section before the finish line,
14:40pretty cool.
14:41Second year in a row,
14:42Jake Weimer wins,
14:44Anaheim won,
14:45and sets himself up for a run
14:47to the West Coast Championship.
14:49Trey Kennard will be right there
14:50to battle with him
14:51as he comes home second.
14:53I don't know why Trey Kennard
14:54was pumping his fans.
14:56I don't know,
14:56was he mad maybe?
14:57He couldn't have been happy.
14:59Second in the first round?
15:01Yeah.
15:02But you know he wanted to win, though.
15:04Sure he did,
15:05but he's pumped, okay?
15:06This is the way to start the season,
15:08right there.
15:09Three points behind,
15:10that's okay.
15:11Short season,
15:12but this is going to be tight
15:13between Weimer and Kennard,
15:15no doubt.
15:15They're going to take this thing
15:16all the way down
15:16to the final round.
15:17Another Dungey,
15:18like these guys battled last year,
15:20Weimer and Dungey.
15:20Yeah.
15:21Got the same thing shaping up here.
15:23Pretty cool.
15:24It's interesting how you two
15:24look at that, though.
15:25Obviously, Jeff taking the glasses
15:28half full,
15:29or, you know,
15:29I've had a solid second place approach,
15:31and Ricky,
15:31you've kind of taken that
15:32it's half empty,
15:33and then second place
15:34is the first loser approach.
15:35Two different ways
15:36of looking at a championship fight.
15:37You've got a lot of people
