00:00hey guys welcome back to the persis once again this is your host in the game and today's video
00:06i'm gonna be reviewing one of the all-time greats today's video i'm gonna be talking about a movie
00:14that is possibly considered the grandfather of cyberpunk in general right like um you know how
00:24you have sci-fis like stars star treks which influence you know the science fiction genre
00:33as we know it today while you have the other part of that futuristic sort of thesis we have that
00:43dominates with a lot of today's culture like movies games enemies and books and etc
00:51today i'm gonna be talking about labor now there's a lot that has been said about this movie
00:59over the years from its storytelling its themes the direction its influence on pop culture and
01:11mainstream media there's like anything you can think of about this movie it has been said by someone
01:17already and there's even the whole situation with this movie having multiple cuts and how that
01:26was handled over the years since its release right but i really have to say that when it comes to this
01:36right this has three different cuts of the movie right you have the original cut then you have
01:43the one from that was in like the 90s where they have like a set director's cut right and then you
01:54had 2007 you know the dawn of the digital age and social media age you have the the final cut which
02:02is the one i saw right um there are rumors about being as many as seven to eight different cuts of this
02:08movie with varying levels of stuff spliced around um from what i've read it doesn't seem like it's that
02:17significant in a sense like it's just like certain things uh but nothing too drastic to the main plot
02:27from what i can see but um with this i'm going to go up the final cut from 2007 i've seen it in
02:37blue way now the plot of this movie it's based around this former policeman named richard decker right
02:46he is a proclaimed blade runner right that his job is to track down bioengineered humanoids
02:57that are called replicants and terminally retire them he is informed that four of them are on earth
03:04illegally and you know he has to like go and find out about them search them down get information
03:12um like retire them there's a bit of investigative work there in this and that's pretty much a thesis
03:20of the plot um you can just essentially pop in the movie the opening crawl he basically explains it for
03:29you the whole setting right here in 2019 los angeles which is basically almost a year ago i know like this
03:39this movie a bit of a bit more can chew in terms of how it predicted the future right well at least we
03:48look like we did not live up to the expectations of the future you know um but then again it was in the
03:5580s this movie was made in 1981 82 ish back then predicting what the 2010s would have looked like
04:08would have been like well as compared to how we've seen them now um the spoiler alert is we don't have
04:16any flying cars of this moment or any of those other crazy stuff that you see in the movie which by the
04:23way i'll have to address that the way this movie looks is incredible it's it's unparalleled in comparison
04:37to any other movie that was released in the 80s you know the 90s or even the 2000s like when you look at
04:48the the city you know they had like this sort of like field view of the buildings and you've seen
04:57like these towers with flames coming out of them it looks so well done and the way that you see the
05:05the building where they zoom in and you see on the richard and character the main character and
05:14doing his interview the cg image the visuals so perfect in it that this movie looked like it came out
05:26a few years ago that's how well made it is from a cinematography production design
05:35perspective which serve as a huge building block for doing another genre that it has created the
05:44cyberpunk genre where you have the all these different stuff that are coming out nowadays like
05:53cyberpunk 2077 for example you know they tried to make like this huge vast exploring city and ghost in
06:02the shell even where they enough got its own live action that was pretty shit in my opinion all of
06:09them were basically inspired in some way shape of all my blade runner because when you look at blade
06:17runner i've looked at this movie at least three to four times by this point the open world it how it looks
06:23how it feels and the way it's paced throughout the movie right it feels like it's really like that this
06:31is a place that actually exists which is an interesting thing because ridley scott said that when he was
06:38filming this movie he went in japan because at the time japan had a lot of these buildings and you know
06:47sceneries where he was able to take advantage of for the production and the weather and such
06:55he said it created the perfect atmosphere for him to to make the movie and how he wanted it as you
07:01know how it looks and that's pretty interesting because the movie is supposed to be based in los angeles
07:07yeah but at the same time it's set in the future so it wasn't like really that big of a deal right
07:14but i personally find really interesting um anyways in the plot why stuff with the story and everything
07:21you know you have the main character he's doing his investigative work he's like looking around
07:29meeting different people one of them is the ceo from the company that creates the replicants um he
07:38interviews his assistant racial and he does the test in her to see if um she feels a pass because she's a
07:50replicant to believe she's a human company ceo right he explains that she is an experiment who has been
07:58given false memories which is one of the main things in this game where it's um talks about you know in the
08:06future you have like robots who are like little humans and they have like memory implants where they're
08:16living a fake life that's a really strong team that gets that has been brought up in recent times
08:27now as he's doing this investigative work you see um he gets led to other characters there's this photos
08:36they know the implant and such he's like trying to figure out these things he goes to a strip club
08:42where one of these replicants that he's supposed to retire he finds out the strip club he like
08:51confronting her tries to escape then he goes after her he shoots her and there's like a pretty cool
09:02shot the way how it's framed up and what pans out where she gets killed it was like really mesmerizing
09:10but he kills her then bryant who was the you know his supervisor right he tells him to retire racial
09:20the one who was in the corporation that he met with earlier the assistant that he put a test on
09:26you know she's the one who believes she is uh a real human this is the the one aware it seems i noticed
09:34where harrison ford's character right he gets in fact with another one of the um but because he gets
09:40getting beat up and he's about to get killed and she comes out from the car and she shots him
09:46and kills um the replica that's trying to kill deco now they they run back to the apartment to like
09:53talk about stuff now this scared part where it gets all like shaky because he's talking about
10:01oh he's not going to track her down you know how um they said you know the supervisor wants him to
10:08retire her or basically kill her but he says he's not gonna do it she tries to leave he you know he
10:18forces her to stop and basically like like sexually assault her right you know the way how he makes his
10:29advances towards her the crazy thing is this movie from 1982 right so back then this wasn't such like
10:37a huge impeding thing on the way how men exert themselves on women you know i mean nowadays you
10:47have this whole thing with the me too like since 2016 2017-ish like back then there was never really
10:55stuff like that to call that shit out and when you sony see if you see the movie back then you didn't
11:01really think much of it or anything like that you know they're getting it on i mean nowadays you might
11:07look at it like that's predatory and it does not not a good look but outside of him like you know them
11:18kissing nothing much really happened now the movie cuts back to the the villain which is where you have
11:25this guy who lives a bash at his apartment where the villain and rory and uh pyrus right the other two
11:35replicants tell telling them that the other replicants are dead and that all they need his help right he's
11:42telling that how he had the sort of syndrome where his life you know is aging uh at a unstable rate in
11:54genetics and his life is like shorter than the average human which is like a sort of like parallel to
12:00the replicants where they are built with a four year lifespan right sorry both of them they try to go
12:08into the um you know the ceo of the company and build the replicants he tried to get into the penthouse
12:15where he tried to demand his um the guy who invented the replicants to basically give him like more life
12:25like expand his life and you know he's trying to educate him and turn it out it's physically possible
12:34like because when he created the replicants he said that he created war and he's already as perfect as
12:40he is there's not nothing more he can do for him you know and he does a pretty good analogy where he says
12:48candles that burns as twice as bright will live are a lot less than candles that burn regularly you know
12:58um do you know the battery burn the the shorter your lifespan is and that's a pretty good way of
13:04putting it right like you know he's he claims that he's this perfect um set of the replicants and that
13:11it was impossible for him to like make him like you know immortal or whatever now this is where it gets
13:17creepy because roy end up confess that he's done questionable things right this is where you get to
13:24realize he's a bad guy although he was doing questionable things that you've seen showed earlier
13:29in the movie but here you see him basically ripping out the eyes from the crater the other guy he tries
13:38to escape and roy who follows him tries to you know i'm basically calming down or whatever now you get to
13:48the main aspect of the movie where you have decker's character comes back he comes back to the apartment
13:56where roy was at with the other guy he gets ambushed by the girl he kills her easy spectacular fashion
14:04it was a pretty weird scene um but roy comes back you know he chases decker through the building um he
14:14then sees the girl is dead and you know he starts going crazy whatever you also see how his um body
14:22is starting to like give up on him as his lifespan is reaching the ending you know the four-year lifespan
14:28he has you see like his hand is like starting to curl up like a fetus position and he's like stabbing his
14:36hand with like a nail or something like keep it from um going out on him they chase each other
14:44outside of the building onto the roof where he deckered he's um he tries to jump to the other
14:51side he falls and he's like hanging on the um ledge roy actually out jumps him and lands on the other
14:58side and then he like he stops him from falling and this is where like one of the most impactful scenes
15:07of the movie happens you know he's um coming up to him um on the other ledge of the roof and he delivers
15:14this monologue about how he's seeing things that people won't believe and that you know his memories
15:21will be lost in time like tears in the rain it's a really impactful scene and then he sees him and he's
15:30just like he just goes out and he turns out like basically retires you know which is their way of putting
15:39it as he dies right then you have the other guy that comes and he says it's too bad she won't live but
15:46then again who does then you go to the main character going to his apartment and he find a girl there
15:52then you know he wakes up and they leave the apartment although there's a call back to the this
15:59you know unicorn origami and then you have this scene that goes back to a a white horse running through
16:09the forest right and i'll get that in a moment that pretty much is it where the movie ends and that's
16:18pretty much it for the story itself it's pretty straightforward and nothing complex when you think
16:24about it you know it's just that it's how the story is told here that makes it stand out the
16:30movie doesn't skim through stuff and like gives you everything at all the bat takes its time it's
16:38very slowish it's also very melodramatic in a sense where as you're watching it you have to like you know
16:46piece together what's going on you have to pay attention to what you're seeing especially with the
16:51dialogue there's not really a lot of dialogue that goes around so with the minimal amount of
16:57dialogue you have between the character interactions you have to pay attention to you have to pick up on
17:01what's going on and even then it's not really the meat of the story it's not really in the dialogue
17:08it's the way how it's all told that sets this apart from make it stand out as it is the thing about
17:17this movie is the teams right this there's several things that goes along here you know you have the
17:22ideas of investigation crime type movie it's all film noir but it's also a sci-fi um drama in itself as
17:34well and a little bit of action but not too much you know this this is how you like you sort of got the
17:42creation of cyberpunk where you mix sci-fi and film noir together there's certain things where it
17:49addresses one of the main ones is the cultural theme of examining humanity you know where you have to
17:56discover who replicants are you have this test like sort of like empathy like this where you ask them
18:04certain questions focus on like animals or other living things and how they would like react right
18:13and appreciate compassion or concern whatever they are like just exposed to against human characters who
18:21would otherwise not have the same answers and it also shows you like most people on the streets like
18:31humans they are like very indifferent to each other what's going on like it's just like another um they
18:39follow them out there and another um interesting team it raises is that the main character itself
18:46if whether or not he might be a replicant it tends to like plays with the audience and you know the viewer
18:53as to but if you if you think that this guy who's the main character if he's also one of them
18:59or if he's not it doesn't give you any clear concise answer um although there are like a lot of debates
19:06that goes around with it as some people say now this one is seen in the movie where
19:12decker he sees this origami um fixture of this horse he cuts the movie cuts to this visual of a white horse
19:24running in the fields first and it's also reference at the end of the movie where he's leaving with the girl
19:33and it has you questioning hmm that is could have uh been an implanted memory right in this head as what they had just
19:42earlier in the movie he was interacting with the girl and he's explaining to her told her memories are implanted because he knows
19:50exactly what she had in the memories even though they like just met but he has this
19:59version of this like unicorn white unicorn horse thingy it raises a question if he is actually one of
20:05them as well and it's interesting because it doesn't really answer that for you which i find really
20:12compelling you know this movie it doesn't give you the um direct answer that you would want when you pay
20:19attention to the themes and the stuff that it raises questions about that i think that a very refreshing
20:28nowadays when you see movies nowadays where you have to like make it more straightforward no you have to
20:37give a direct answer and whatever and you also have to set it up as a sequel whatever you know all that
20:44stuff and it's pretty interesting because this movie actually the way it ends right it ended up leaving it
20:50so it could have meant that it was certainly a sequel which by the way spoiler alert a sequel did come out
20:59but i'll have to save that for another video um because that is a whole other thing in itself
21:07considering the gap in between that coming out and this movie come out is so huge it's just a whole other
21:16topic by itself right but outside that that's pretty much about it in terms of the story right right
21:25right so that's pretty much it's all i can think of with terms of you know the plotting right um
21:32the movie is is really something else because even after watch it like before time now there's still
21:39stuff about it i'm still trying to like figure out you know it's it's that open-ended book and it's crazy
21:49because the story is really simple you know this guy who will go on investigating work he's hired to
21:58track down these groups like like four or five different people he has to kill them basically kill them
22:05and you know that's pretty much it you know at the ending he he accounts for them they have this sort
22:14like showdown solo showdown and left down there then then he basically is right it's a simple straightforward
22:24story but you know where it's told it's you end up having this huge huge um discussion and about it and
22:32it's themes and all because the way it was executed especially from like a technical standpoint this
22:41movie is a technical marvel from the way that it looked and from the way it was designed too like
22:49movies like today don't do you really even come close to what this movie had it's so crazy when you think
22:57about like this movie is nearly 40 years old guys and it has been like forever edge in to the mainstream
23:07culture and what influence um the sci-fi genre as we you know see today in our games and other movies
23:18and tv shows and the most disappointing aspect in it is that right when this movie came out it was
23:27sort of like a mixed bag in fact it under performed at the box office to the point where it was basically
23:32considered a box office bomb right it did gross back its budget but it didn't really like make any
23:40butt which is crazy when you think like a movie has influenced you like this you would think that it was
23:45like a box office hit but it wasn't because unfortunately for this movie it came out around the time
23:53where it had et and several other big movies that came out that actually did banners at the box office
24:02so this movie is sort of like handicapped at the box office you know which is gonna suck because it's
24:08harrison ford in this movie and he's like basically the guy that really gives the life in this movie because
24:15this movie is very slow paced it's very mysterious and how it goes about in a storytelling doesn't
24:23be direct or give you straightforward stuff you know it's like you have to pay attention to it
24:32as it goes along right and focus to figure out this movie as it goes along even though it has a simple
24:40storyline and harrison ford his performance you know his charm in this movie he really does carry
24:49the movie it just sucks that you know because this guy this movie came out during harrison ford's golden
24:56age where he had star wars and indiana jones and this movie was out around that time and it's basically
25:04one of his lowest performers at in his prime days which is kind of sucky but yeah this movie when it
25:12came out it wasn't even um hell yes please as it was today it was so like mixed to mix positive at the
25:19time because people like misunderstanding the um the themes of the um the movie the plot you know thinking
25:29or this is supposed to be a sci-fi but it's also a detective cell sci-fi you know so they're like
25:37misunderstood understandments about you know the movie and it's um ideas but from from then till now
25:50as time has passed it has grown upon the audience which is something i really like with these types of
25:57movies where over time people come around to it and to understand it and realize that how good this
26:06movie actually is as opposed to movies that they come out and they're like wow they're like so good and
26:13then like years later you visit them and you're like it was okay you know it's like aging like fine
26:21wine in a time where movies are aging like milk and that is something that's very powerful it shows you just
26:34how well you know some of the movies back then were made in a time where resources were much less valuable
26:43like less in the movie business but nonetheless blade runner it's a masterpiece of its class made by a
26:56master cinematic auteur ridley scott who at the time only had like aliens and like probably some small
27:05credits to his name he was a commercial director so he directed um advertisements and commercials and
27:16at the time he just had this aliens movie and then he lent that to james cameron and then that
27:23we all know that went after that and he did this and out of all the moves i think
27:31ridley scott has done in his career i think this is the most profound movie that he has ever worked on
27:38and it is probably the movie that has earned every single place it gets and then some even though it is
27:46not for everyone like i said it's a slow-paced uh movie you know it's visually stunning it's also not
27:58as direct as some other sci-fi movies it takes its time it sets up certain things and also leave things
28:06in the open for you to like ponder on so yeah all right guys so the sum it all about give this movie a
28:179.7 out of 10 i would say it's it's perfect right it's right on there perfect right if you guys don't
28:28know of my reading yet i would say as it goes up i'll put it in the um description number but as you go
28:37from 9 to 9.6 you have the excellence and from 9.7 to 10 you have the perfects right and for me this
28:47movie is probably i think the first time i've actually reviewed a movie on my um reviews where i
28:55list it as a perfect movie um i know there are more perfect movies out there but this is the first time i
29:01i reviewed the movie and i was you know deemed it as such because this movie it it is at this point
29:10you know it's a perfect movie there's literally nothing else you can like say i mean there's like
29:16probably one or two gripes about it nothing like really that major i can think of i mean aside from
29:23like the imagery of deckard and the do you know the the horse and then there's the whole problem with
29:36this movie having like seven eight different cuts of it which like had like a huge confusion as to
29:44which one you have to watch which one is the definitive one but i didn't really um bother too much
29:50by that i just watch the final cut although i did hear that there are certain scenes in one of the
29:55other cuts that wasn't in the final cut so there's all that hassle but yeah those are i just mainly like
30:03small guys i'd really like legitimate criticisms so to say right so yeah guys that pretty much sums up
30:12this video my like sort of review commentary on blade runner a perfect sci-fi movie the grandfather of
30:23cyberpunk the movie that is everything and more as you know what everyone has been seeing about it right
30:32so far that's basically how i view it and my commentary um let me know what you guys take
30:38comment section down below what are your thoughts on the blade runner right do you like it do you hate
30:45it do you think it's overrated do you think it's underrated um do you disagree with it things do you
30:51think it's been misinterpreted you know there's a lot of like discussions about it maybe there's something
30:57that you have picked up or that no one has picked up as yet then let me know in the comment section down
31:03below and be sure to check out my only videos and i guess i'll see you guys later
