00:00Kyle Shanahan and the 49er front office had absolutely no choice.
00:04They had no choice in this matter.
00:06I mean, they had every choice, but it's interesting when you ask him a question on a Monday,
00:13and, you know, is Jake Moody still your kicker right now?
00:16Yeah, now he is, but ask me again in, I don't know, 41 minutes when I have a chance to tell Jake that he's gone.
00:23Go ahead and ask me tonight how I feel about who my kicker is.
00:27And so Jake Moody gets waved, and now it's maybe going to be Eddie Pinero.
00:31He's being brought in for a tryout.
00:34Workout today.
00:34He's going to work it out, and, you know, we'll see if he is spry enough.
00:39And he turns 30 on Saturday, which is not old, but he's a guy who's kicked for a number of different teams,
00:45and he's a guy who can kick.
00:47Hopefully he can go out there and be better than Moody if he gets the job.
00:50And Boyer, the new special teams coach for the 49ers, did have him with the Jets for a little stretch a couple of years ago.
00:57Which is probably where the connection comes, because I know a lot of people were like,
01:00it's going to be Greg Joseph, and it doesn't look like it's going to be Greg Joseph.
01:03Which, oh, by the way, kind of, I saw that, and I thought it kind of furthered a point that I've been trying to make
01:10for the last couple of weeks about why kickers are different.
01:13Like, I know you kind of looked at the preseason thing, and you see that different,
01:17and I've sort of said, I don't see it as different because you're a kicker.
01:20You're not working things out.
01:22You have one job, you kick it straight.
01:24Like, if a football player was actually, if a kicker was a football player,
01:29then you'd bring in the guy who was in camp with you.
01:32Because team camaraderie, and you know how we do it here, and the chemistry,
01:38and you understand what's going on.
01:40But that's not what they did.
01:41They grabbed someone they've never met before and brought him in for a tryout.
01:44Because you're a hired gun.
01:46It's like I said, it's no different to me than calling TaskRabbit and having somebody show up at your house
01:52and build your bed, and then leave.
01:55You didn't do anything to put this house together.
01:58You don't buy the food here.
02:00You don't support this place.
02:01You don't take the kids to school.
02:04You don't do anything.
02:05Just show up, build the bed, and then leave.
02:09And if you build the bed correctly, then we'll have you back.
02:12And if you don't, we're going to hire somebody else.
02:15It's the weirdest position in sports.
02:17And that's what I sort of believe, in addition to the obvious, I think from a political standpoint,
02:24I just don't think Kyle Shanahan can look the rest of his team in the eye today
02:29and tell them that we're trying to win this weekend and send Jake Moody out there to kick field goals.
02:35That's probably the best point you've made in two days.
02:38Oh, thank you.
02:39I didn't make when two days ago was Sunday, but anyway.
02:42You made a lot of points, and you did it on Twitter, and I'm sure you made points in your Sunday show.
02:46I was listening to Mark Grandy and Sterling Bennett on overtime.
02:50Skew local, as I like to do.
02:52Not that I had the choice.
02:53I guess I could have streamed you, but I didn't.
02:547 o'clock, Grandy sent me the text.
02:56You're a ball game.
02:57Right.
02:58So we did take it from there.
02:59And at that point, I was yoked in on the bedtime sequence.
03:02But if you talk about what you just mentioned, that is probably the biggest influence on this whole thing.
03:09And I was looking at the drives earlier.
03:12So you lose Kittle, and you still find your way to four-minute drill your way down at the end of the half.
03:18And, you know, Grandy's grade's coming up later.
03:21And I know he's going to be critical of Shanahan's play calling in the second quarter.
03:24And he's not wrong.
03:25But you got in position to kick a field goal and have a lead.
03:30And Jake Moody doinked it.
03:32We've already played the sound a couple times.
03:34And then the second half, you come out, and you go eight-plus minutes.
03:39And you work your way down the field with no Kittle and two tight ends almost exclusively.
03:45And you are smash-mouthing your way down the field.
03:48And you stall out at the 18, and then the kick is blocked.
03:51Not Moody's fault, but if you're a player in that moment, you don't give a crap whose fault it is.
03:57You just worked for eight solid football minutes to get down there.
04:02You dominated Seattle.
04:04You're in position to tie the game.
04:06And again, we can't get three points?
04:08Where's my helmet?
04:09I'm going to throw it.
04:10Where's Mike Singletary?
04:12This is a class.
04:13Can't do it.
04:14Can't win with him.
04:16Can't do it.
04:18That's it.
04:18And, you know, to the point that you were saying off the top, I chuckled a little bit when I saw, thank you, Florio and Pro Football Talk,
04:28their headline after the Moody release today was,
04:32Kyle Shanahan changes his mind from Sunday to Tuesday, releases Jake Moody.
04:38I said, no, if you weren't listening, that's what you might think.
04:43But that's not what Kyle Shanahan said.
04:45And he openly said that that's not what he said.
04:49Once someone followed up with him and asked, why are you, like, ensuring that Jake Moody will be the kicker this weekend?
04:56And Kyle's like, I didn't say that.
04:58You asked me if there was any doubt that he's my kicker right now.
05:01No, there's no doubt that he's my kicker right now.
05:03But I have a plane flight to catch, and we're going to evaluate on the plane.
05:07And then we'll figure that whole thing out later.
05:09The second I heard that, you knew damn well exactly the way this was going to go.
05:14And so, you know, I don't know how everybody feels today.
05:18Like, you get to these situations, and sometimes it feels like the fan base and the media has kind of been on a crusade to make this happen.
05:24And then when it finally does happen, you feel a little bad.
05:28Like, Jake Moody, he's not a bad guy.
05:30He didn't ask to be picked in the third round.
05:33The Niners did that.
05:35He didn't do that.
05:35But the guy got hurt partially because he made a poor decision on the field.
05:41I've always said this about kickers.
05:43Get your damn head out of the tackle.
05:46Do not go in there and try to make the tackle.
05:48I'd rather somebody goes and scores.
05:50Don't go make the tackle, kicker.
05:53And he's never been the same again.
05:55And so, I don't know.
05:56Like, I have every belief that Jake Moody, with the mental side of this position,
06:01he probably will go have a career somewhere.
06:03I don't think he's done.
06:05And he may work out.
06:07But I'm sorry.
06:08It can't be here.
06:09There's no more time to wait.
06:11And so, this became, I think, just an obvious move for the 49ers to make today.
06:15You mentioned Doug Bryan before.
06:17And as a rookie, he was a 49er.
06:20And they won the Super Bowl.
06:21And he had a mostly good year.
06:23And then the next year, he was either cut or traded.
06:26I didn't get the exact transaction.
06:28I just looked at his stats.
06:29But he went on to kick for multiple other teams.
06:33Oh, yeah.
06:33He had a good, long career.
06:34And so, that's kind of the way that goes.
06:37And actually, it'd be great to talk to Doug Bryan, who went to De La Salle.
06:40That's a good thing.
06:42That'd be great.
06:42We should track him down.
06:44I mean, somebody who was in that same spot.
06:46Third round pick.
06:47And he actually was put into much more of a pressure cooker on a team that was expected to win the Super Bowl.
06:53And, in fact, they did win the Super Bowl.
06:55And then the next year, he struggled.
06:58And he was gone.
06:59And that's just the way it goes with kickers.
07:01And I get that.
07:02So, here's the story on Doug Bryan.
07:04Just because you asked, I thought that was interesting.
07:06So, yeah, they win the Super Bowl.
07:07He also apparently recovered a fumble in the NFC Championship game.
07:10I don't remember that.
07:12But he did.
07:13And then the very next year, are you ready for this percentage?
07:17Talk to me.
07:18The next year, after winning the Super Bowl, Doug Bryan made 58% of his field goal tries.
07:27Which is a disastrous number.
07:29Even back then.
07:30That's a disastrous number.
07:32And back then, you didn't get to kick the K-ball that you have now.
07:36Right.
07:36And, you know, kicking then was harder than now.
07:38But 58%, that's not going to work.
07:39And it wasn't a full season.
07:41So, it was a portion of the season.
07:43He was making 58% and then missed a potential game-winning field goal one week against the
07:48Indianapolis Colts.
07:50And the Niners cut him.
07:51And three weeks later, he signed with the New Orleans Saints.
07:53And as you said, he went on to play 12 seasons in the league.
07:57I could completely see this happening with Jake Moody.
08:00Absolutely.
08:01Well, think about Eddie Pinero.
08:02If he, in fact, gets this job with the 49ers, it's not his first rodeo.
08:07He's a guy who's been a bear, missed a year.
08:11He was a Jet, and then a Panther for three.
08:13And then this year, the Panthers had a competition, and he lost.
08:17And so, he's back on the street.
08:19And if he becomes a Niner, that'll now be his fourth team in six years.
08:23That's what you do when you are a journeyman kicker.
08:26The difference is, and there's a fair question to be asked with this guy not even 30 years old,
08:31why has Eddie Pinero not ever actually, like, stuck long-term with anyone?
08:36He is making 88% of his field goals in his career.
08:4288% of his field goals for his career.
08:48Right.
08:48Right.
08:49Look at his numbers beyond 40.
08:52He is 43 for 55 beyond 40, which is, that's not good enough in the modern day and age.
09:0043 for 55, man, pretty good.
09:02That's 78%.
09:03That's pretty good from beyond 40.
09:05Not anymore.
09:06Yeah.
09:06And I did the math during the crossover.
09:08This year, through one week in the National Football League, kickers are 14 for 17 from beyond 50.
09:15Yeah.
09:16So, you've got to have...
09:17He's 11 for 14 in his career from beyond 50.
09:20Right.
09:21That's not...
09:21It's not a lot of chances, but...
09:23I mean, no, it's not a lot of chances, and maybe he'd...
09:25I don't know much about Eddie Pinero.
09:28I don't know if he's got the biggest legs.
09:29I can close my eyes and remember that he's, you know, much more of an accuracy guy, not so much of a distance guy.
09:35Yeah, I don't know if he's a long-distance guy, but again, 11 for 14 from beyond 50.
09:39What's his longest of his career?
09:4256.
09:43He has made a 56-yarder.
09:45That is the longest of his career.
09:48I don't know.
09:48I mean, do you need someone that'll like, you've got to make it from 60?
09:51I don't know.
09:52He's 29 years old.
09:53He makes 88% of his kicks.
09:56Sure.
09:57Like, great.
09:58And actually, I do think the Niners, I don't think they're going to commit to whoever they bring in.
10:03Did you notice that Robbie Chosen was released off of the practice squad today?
10:09So, the Niners didn't just create a roster spot.
10:11They also created a practice squad roster spot, which means, in theory, you could just practice squad the kicker and then call him up.
10:21Each week, you can do that for as long as three weeks.
10:24Yeah, three times you can call a guy up.
10:26And so, therefore, if you like, let's try him for a week.
10:29If it's not good, well, okay, off we go.
10:32Let's do it with someone else.
10:33I don't know.
10:34But, like, if you want to know the biggest sort of, like, the firmest statement that the Niners made, they released Jake Moody.
10:45They waived him, I should say, without even knowing who their next kicker was going to be.
10:50Right.
10:50It's not like they went, ooh, we found someone.
10:53They went, not you.
10:55Our first decision is not you.
10:58And now we'll go from there.
10:59So, that's how the Niners did it this week.
11:01That's right.
11:02And you think about last year where Jake Moody got hurt, and then you had Wisnowski kick for the remainder of that game.
11:09And he went one for one, a little chippy, inside of 29.
11:13But you had Anders Carlson.
11:15You had Matthew Wright.
11:16And so, even last year when they were in a spot when they didn't have Jake Moody for a handful of games,
11:22they went into that piecemeal approach.
11:24So, yeah, if it's Eddie Pinheiro, and he gets the first crack, and he's not as good as they want, they're on to the next.
