00:00I know part of our conversation will be not only about the power rankings,
00:04and we won't do the tedious thing of, oh, where do you have them?
00:07But I did find it interesting that ESPN and NFL.com had them at 11 and 12, respectively.
00:13Even though they're undefeated, they're behind a couple of 1 and 2s and a couple of 2 and 1s.
00:18So for me, it's not about where do you have them, although we can get into that.
00:22Eighth.
00:23Right, and I think I have them about the same spot.
00:25I didn't really go all the way through it, but for me, it's more about, like,
00:29what do you think?
00:303-0, you don't apologize for 3-0, you don't champion 3-0,
00:35but 3-0 is better than 2-1, 1-2, and 0-3.
00:39So that's kind of where I am.
00:40I just, every single year, thank God for the holidays, let me tell you why.
00:46Which ones?
00:47Well, all of them.
00:47We just had Rosh Hashanah.
00:49We did.
00:50Score that.
00:51Once we get past Thanksgiving, that's the start of it,
00:53but then we get into December and there's that void.
00:56There's that void from the college football schedule that allows people who are big fans
01:00to, you know, go shop and stuff.
01:02Go to Amazon, go to Whole Foods so that you can return your Amazon, all that thing that
01:08we do.
01:09And then we get ready.
01:10Whether it's Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, New Year's Day, you're going to go on a diet,
01:14whatever the hell it is.
01:15Shout out to Wally.
01:15That whole deal.
01:17And thank goodness for that, because that, for me, serves as a distraction from what
01:22I find to be the most insufferable annual sports debate that unfolds every year.
01:29And that is, who should be allowed to go play for the college football national championship?
01:39Every year it happens, and every year I go, what are all of you doing?
01:43What do you mean, who should go?
01:45There is no should in sports.
01:48There is and there is not.
01:49I am Yoda when it comes to this thing.
01:52There is and there is not.
01:55And they've done away with a lot of that.
01:56A lot of it, but not all of it on any level, even in college basketball on the back end.
02:01Don't you do it.
02:02You're going to have some sort of people in a boardroom deciding who gets in and who
02:07doesn't get in.
02:08And the whole thing is slanted and it's financially corrupt and all of these things, and I get
02:14that, and that's not even what I'm getting at.
02:15My point is, is one of the reasons, there's two big reasons that I am much more of a pro
02:21sports person than a college sports person.
02:23The reason number one is I grew up here.
02:25And that's what makes this city go.
02:26But reason number two is I cannot stand, I have a visceral reaction to the idea that
02:34people get to go play at the end of the year based on some dude who thinks they should.
02:40And I can't stand the constant conversation where people go, well, Alabama is 10-2 and
02:47Boise State is 12-0, but Alabama, they played Auburn and Georgia and strength of, oh gosh,
02:58shut up.
02:59You're in or you're out.
03:02And that's the NFL.
03:04And so that's what I keep hearing today is a college football conversation that's based
03:08on strength of schedule and the eye test.
03:11It's irrelevant.
03:12It's irrelevant.
03:13They're 3-0.
03:15And I think a smart person can also look at these Niners and go, why would you talk about
03:20the eye test when half of their key players are not even playing?
03:25Like, it's a rational thought to think that this is going to look like a different group
03:29sometime down the road.
03:30Well, the eye test is what you see with your eye.
03:33And the eye test is you've had Brock Purdy for one game, two quarters of which he was
03:38hampered.
03:38And Nick Bosa missed three quarters of the last game and he'll miss the year.
03:42George Kittle played one game.
03:44So the eye test is the eye test.
03:46And in this case, the eye test is a team that has had parts in and parts out.
03:51No IU.
03:52Demarcus Robinson gets to actually play tomorrow at practice.
03:56And will it be Mac Jones or Brock Purdy?
03:58I know Brock today was limited.
04:00So the eye test is in the NFL exactly what it is, which is this is your team.
04:06And you've got Luke Farrell and Jake Tonjes as tight ends.
04:10And you've got, you know, Connor Colby as a rookie who's now expected to be a good blocker.
04:16So I disagree with the nature of the eye test because, yeah, if you do make the playoffs and
04:21you do get to January, will it be Brock and Christian and George and Brandon and Ricky?
04:28Or will it be Mac and Isaac and Jake and, I mean, whoever else?
04:34We don't know.
04:36And whoever it is is allowed to win.
04:38And whoever it is is also allowed to lose.
04:41And so for me, the eye test right now in this moment through three weeks is what the eye test is.
04:46And part of that is you've got a backup quarterback who's 2-0.
04:50You've got a star running back who's not great at running it.
04:54But boy, what a receiver.
04:56He's one of the best receivers in football.
04:58You have a couple of tight ends who you never would have thought would play.
05:03Now you have your edge rusher, his down.
05:05You've got rookie defensive players who are flashing and making huge plays in huge moments.
05:10So the eye test is what it is.
05:13You've got a kicker that you love.
05:14You've got a puncher that's quietly getting it done.
05:18No, you love the kicker.
05:19But you love the kicker.
05:20But you love the kicker because of who he's not.
05:23But you also love him because of who he is.
05:25Yes, but he did.
05:26He made a 50-yarder this last week.
05:28He's played two games and he opened up his Niners career by missing an extra point.
05:31Yeah, fine.
05:32I'm not taking a shot at him, but that's my point.
05:34It wouldn't have been fine if it was someone else.
05:36And it wouldn't have been fine if he would have lost the game by one.
05:38I get it.
05:39If it was Jake Moody, that would not have been okay.
05:41Okay, so very often, and I think that this is true, like that's why I asked that question the other day, like have you ever broken up with someone?
05:48Like when you start dating someone new, you don't even see any of the flaws.
05:53You are so thrilled that that person is not the last person that you love that person just for that.
06:00You're like, I'm not even going to get into whether or not we're compatible yet.
06:03But I'm just thrilled that you're not her, and I think that's where we are with Pinheiro.
06:09A game-winning kick absolutely helps.
06:12How could I take a shot at the guy?
06:13I have no issue with him.
06:15But he hasn't done anything where you're like, oh my God, he's amazing.
06:19He hit a 35-yard field goal.
06:21You're supposed to hit a 35-yard field goal.
06:23Yeah, you are.
06:24Great.
06:25But Moody missed a, what, 28-yarder?
06:28Yeah, that's my point.
06:29That's my favorite thing about Eddie Pinheiro is he's not Jake Moody.
06:33That's my favorite thing about him.
06:36Yeah.
06:36That's all I'm saying.
06:37I mean, does Jake Moody have a walk-off game-winning kick in his career with the Niners?
06:43Oof.
06:43I mean, I'm not going to give him that preseason Raiders thing that everybody raved about because it didn't count.
06:48But technically that was.
06:50Yeah, preseason doesn't count.
06:51Does he have a walk-off kick?
06:55I don't know.
06:58I'm actually looking at it here.
07:00And he walked off Tampa 23-20 last year in a game where they probably should have salted it away a long time before.
07:10But that was one with three seconds left that he made the kick.
07:15And on the game, he was three for six.
07:19So, yeah, you get credit for a walk-off win.
07:22That was the same game where Debo freaked out at him.
07:25Must have been.
07:25Same game.
07:26Yeah, November 10th of last year.
07:28So, he gets credit for the walk-off winner.
07:31But you were three for six.
07:33So, yeah, there's that.
07:35Yeah.
07:35So, anyway, that's all I'm getting at.
07:37Like, you know, we can do this.
07:41I know that power rankings are tons of fun.
07:43I'm not trying to be the fun police at all.
07:45That's why we came in here.
07:47And even though I said it's irrelevant, I've also got him at eighth, Dibs.
07:50I've got him at eighth.
07:51There you go.
07:51That's my pre-week four ranking of the San Francisco 49ers.
07:58I've got him at eighth.
07:59But the other side to it is I do find the entire conversation, like, it's fun to have as long as that's where you keep it.
08:07It's just fun.
08:09That's a cloud that you're talking about.
08:12The Niners are eighth.
08:13Like, it's not relevant, and it's not based on anything with substance.
08:19Again, very strange to me that you would watch a Mac Jones-led 49er team with Sky Moore and Marquez Valdez-Scantling catching passes in the fourth quarter.
08:29Why would you look at that and go, well, they don't look like a playoff team to me.
08:33Why?
08:34They don't look like the Niners to me.
08:36You've got people catching passes where people have to pull out the internet to figure out who just caught that in the fourth quarter of a two-point game.
08:44People don't even know who that is yet.
08:46So why would I look at this group and start projecting what I think that they're going to be in December or January?
08:54That's why I'm so excited right now.
08:58The only thing that matters is that you won.
09:01Your style points right now are completely useless.
09:05They may matter down the road.
09:08Yes, you have to be a really good team to advance in January.
09:13But a Niner fan should know better than anyone that, like, a roster can change in the blink of an eye.
09:20It seems to happen to the Niners every week.
09:22Yeah, and a season can change in the blink of an eye, and that's just the way it goes.
09:26And if you want to talk about power rankings, you could look at teams like the Broncos, the Chiefs, and the Ravens.
09:32It's three teams that some people would have ahead of the Niners, and they're one and two.
09:37So you've got a one and two team.
09:39And I think that both those power rankings that I shared with you, NFL.com and ESPN, they both have the Ravens ahead.
09:46And I think they both have the Chiefs ahead.
09:47I don't.
09:48I know you don't, but they do, and it's the national perspective.
09:52And you and I think differently about the Chiefs.
09:54I think the Chiefs are better than you think.
09:57I don't think they'll make the playoffs, but I do think that they're a team that is probably going to wind up in that 9-8 sort of a maybe even 10-7.
10:06I do think their defense is good enough to where they can be better than they've been so far.
10:11But the greater point is what you're saying.
10:13Right now, power rankings doesn't matter.
10:16If you want to rank a team that's one and two ahead of the Niners, go ahead.
10:20They're one and two.
10:21And right now the Niners are three and oh.
10:23The Chiefs are one and two.
10:25And they're not in a must-win spot, but them and the Ravens both, they face each other in the 125 window on Sunday.
10:34And whoever loses that game is one and three.
10:38And you've got probably about a 10% chance of making the playoffs.
10:41Well, the issue for the Ravens, if they were to come out of that with a loss, is that Joe Burrow has been hurt.
10:46Cleveland is Cleveland.
10:48And Pittsburgh is going to also be that middling group.
10:52They'll be 9-8.
10:53Yeah.
10:53I mean, Pittsburgh always has a winning record.
10:55The Ravens were, they had a wobbly start last year.
10:58And then they ended up winning that division.
11:00So I would still, even at one and three, very much favor the Ravens to win that division.
11:05They probably even come out of a one and three situation.
11:08They might be a game out of first.
11:10You know, we'll see what Pittsburgh does across the pond against Minnesota this weekend.
11:15That might be a little decisive.
11:17But Cleveland's not a threat to anyone.
11:19And I don't believe that Cincinnati is either without Joe Burrow.
11:22To your point about the Ravens, after the Chiefs game, they have the Texans and the Rams, a bye.
11:27Bears, Dolphins, Vikings, Browns, Jets, Bengals.
11:31Okay, now, by...
11:32You want to talk about going on a run.
11:33By contrast, listen to what Kansas City is about to do.
11:38And tell me who just got the better of who on the show bet.
11:42The Chiefs, I believe, are about to be one and three.
11:46So, that's a premise.
11:48They play Baltimore, as Dib said on Sunday.
11:51Then they go to Jacksonville.
11:53That one's, you know, Chiefs will probably be a small favorite.
11:56Little coin flippy, let's say they win it.
11:59Week after that, they get the Lions.
12:01Then they get the Raiders.
12:03They probably handle that, though it is a division game.
12:06Then they get the Washington Commanders.
12:08Then, back-to-back road games to Buffalo and Denver.
12:11There's a bye in between.
12:13And then after that, they get the Colts.
12:16Good Lord.
12:17Much tougher.
12:18This is not a team that is going to be above .500 at the end of that.
12:21And that's week 12, my opinion.
12:23That's not a team that's going to have seven wins at that moment.
12:25Yeah, they might.
12:27And it depends on how you think about this game coming up.
12:30And I'll share my thoughts as we get to Friday on what I think about Baltimore and Kansas City.
12:36Mr. 12-2 over here.
12:37The pick is already in for tomorrow, and I'll share that one tomorrow as well.
12:40You don't get to pick that game, though.
12:41I don't get to.
12:42You can if you want.
12:43I'll share it.
12:44You want to do a bonus pick?
12:45You're 12-2.
12:46If any struggling gambler out there wants to hit me up for my thoughts, I'd be welcome to share it.
12:51All right.
12:52I'll play the role of struggling gambler.
12:54What are your thoughts?
12:56Don't say yet, though.
