00:00Greg, let's get to Mac Jones, who we are likely to see Sunday in New Orleans,
00:05and I guess start with sort of more of an umbrella question about his play over the last four years.
00:11What have you seen as his strengths and weaknesses?
00:13Well, I think in many ways he's stylistically similar to Purdy,
00:18other than the fact that he's not as good an athlete as Purdy.
00:21Now, back to Willard and Dibbs on 95.7 The Game.
00:26Same guy, just not as good.
00:27Yeah, stylistically, and I loved his breakdown, and he's right.
00:31He's a guy who can thrive in the system, and he's going to make the correct throws
00:37based on what's schemed and what's called.
00:39The one thing that he said, and you said it before, it's about the escapability.
00:43If things do break down, is he going to have that same Brock ability to wiggle out and run for nine
00:49or throw one up for Tonjes? Maybe not.
00:51Yeah, let's get into this, everyone.
00:541-888-957-9570. Brock Purdy is very unlikely to play this weekend in New Orleans.
01:01Kyle Shanahan called it a long shot.
01:03Any further sense about whether Brock will be able to play on Sunday?
01:08I think it's a long shot.
01:09Is it possible that Purdy's injury could be a multi-week thing?
01:12I think that's the toe more so than the shoulder.
01:15Yeah, okay, so it's the toe.
01:17It's a long shot for this weekend, and it could be a multi-week injury.
01:22So, Mack Jones, very, very likely to be in.
01:26We know George Kittle's on IR.
01:27Jawan Jennings did not practice today, but that one is still considered kind of day-to-day.
01:33And then Trent Williams and Nick Bosa and Christian McCaffrey all got vet days and skipped practice today.
01:39Anyway, the one that really kind of hit me or will stick with me if I'm trying to create hope in my mind for the 49ers
01:48with however long Mack Jones is in there or if he has to come in again later in the year or whatever,
01:55he is sort of toward the end when we ask Greg, like, has Mack ever really had what he needs around him?
02:01And he was like, no.
02:04No.
02:04He expanded, but the first thing he said was no.
02:08Like, has Mack ever really had stability, the right coaching, the right whatever,
02:14whether it's offensive line receivers?
02:16I know everyone gets so flippant, triggered, and freaked out about product of system.
02:23But we all know, I think we're starting to get more comfortable with the idea that, to some degree,
02:29they're all a product of the system.
02:30Yeah, almost all of them, I'd say.
02:32And then, to some degree, every system is a product of them.
02:34Like, yes, you need a good quarterback, but nobody is good if everything's crumbling around you.
02:40And I kind of think it's almost become what the Niners do.
02:45They're like, let's get a quarterback, and then let's back him up with somebody who we think is undervalued
02:53because they've never been in a good system.
02:56And quarterbacks are learning that this is where you go rehabilitate your career.
03:02It's certainly what Sam Darnold did a couple of years ago.
03:05And he actually not only rehabilitated his career, but he learned a lot.
03:09And when he went to Minnesota, he had a great year because he got some confidence, he got some knowledge.
03:15You have a great year, then you go out and you get that bag.
03:17And so if you're Mack, last offseason, you're thinking, I want to follow the Darnold plan.
03:22And you get $5 million guaranteed in a two-year deal.
03:25Maybe he's only here for one year.
03:27And right away, this Sunday, it looks like he's going to get a start and a chance to show what he can do with his stability.
03:34And thinking about Jacksonville last year, you're running backs for Travis Etienne and Tank Bigsby.
03:40They're professional football players, but it's not McCaffrey.
03:44And you had one good receiver, and you didn't have much else.
03:48Your coach was on the way to getting fired.
03:50You went 4-13, and the thing was kind of a broken mess.
03:55I mean, I think that Jacksonville and the Patriots before them, there are players.
03:59There are players around them.
04:01But to me, it's even more a function of coaching.
04:04The Jacksonville coaching staff has been in ruins for a number of years.
04:08And that's why it got rebooted again this year.
04:11And New England was, you know, Matt gets picked at the end of the Belichick run.
04:16And then there's this confusion over what, remember this, like they didn't even have an offensive coordinator.
04:23You know, right?
04:24McDaniels leaves, and you have Belichick, who's a defensive guy.
04:28And then I'm going to blank out on the assistant coach with the beard.
04:32Who's the guy that had the big beard that was a defensive coordinator?
04:34Patricia?
04:35Yes.
04:35The pencil?
04:35Yeah, and then they used him as the offensive coordinator, but he's not an offensive coordinator.
04:40And so, Mack's getting worse every year of his career.
04:44And they were just kind of all over the place.
04:46And so, I don't know the inner workings of what they were doing, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't as high level as this.
04:53Like, you didn't have Christian McCaffrey behind you, Kyle Shanahan calling plays, and Trent Williams as your left tackle.
05:00I'm pretty sure that Mack Jones has never functioned in an environment like that.
05:04So, that doesn't mean he's going to be great this weekend, but it does mean what all athletes want, he now has.
05:15And that is, be in your best position to succeed.
05:19And I think that this game this Sunday is probably his best position to succeed.
05:23So, let's see what happens.
05:25Yeah, and probably going back to his rookie year where he had Josh McDaniels was the OC, and they went 10-7.
05:33Buffalo hammered him in the wild card game, 47-17.
05:36But if you look at that team, he had some real legitimate professional weapons around him.
05:44And the greatest football coach in the history of the NFL, not quite fully checked out yet.
05:49But the rosters he had year over year after that, they got progressively worse.
05:53And then Jacksonville is even worse than that.
05:55So, for Mack Jones, it's kind of a clean slate.
05:58Ideally, this would be happening in week seven, maybe, or week eight, where he had even more time to ramp up to it.
06:04But he got a good amount of reps in the preseason.
06:08So, all right, kid, go show us what you got.
06:10Kind of a fun text from the Boxer and Gerson work injury attorney's text line from the 650.
06:15The last time Mack had good things around him, Alabama.
06:21And that went very, very well.
06:23Now, that does not mean anything in terms of translating to the NFL, but I will never know what to believe.
06:32But on some level, we are led to believe that Kyle Shanahan had eyes for Mack Jones based on what he saw him do the last time he had good things going on around him, which was at Alabama.
06:46Yes, and it's interesting because stylistically, as Greg Cosell just mentioned, he matches up with Brock Purdy very well, yet Trey Lance doesn't match up with what Brock Purdy does.
06:58And so, in that moment, in that draft, they chose to go the other way.
07:03Then you find Brock Purdy with the last pick in the draft, and Mack Jones becomes available years later.
07:09It's like, yeah, Brock is a better version of the guy I was crushing on in that draft.
07:14So, of course, we'll take him as our backup.
07:16And I do think the transition from Brock to Mack this Sunday, assuming it happens, and Kyle said it's a long shot, I'm pretty much expecting that it will happen.
07:25But I don't think the transition will be as abrupt as going from Purdy to Trey Lance, for example.
07:34No, no, no.
07:34Or even like Josh Dobbs, you know, quarterbacks who stylistically are different.
07:38Yeah, yeah.
07:39I mean, quick aside, this is another reason, and you know this, whenever we do, I don't even like anymore when people before the year goes, what's your Super Bowl prediction?
07:51I'm like, what the hell is it?
07:55I have no idea what January is going to look like.
07:59The best part about the NFL season is that every Monday, it's a whole new world.
08:06It's a whole new world.
08:09We had a summit six days ago, okay?
08:13Six days ago, we held a summit that was solely based on this 49er season.
08:18What are the things that we talked about?
08:20We worried about Christian McCaffrey's injury.
08:23Turns out he doesn't have one.
08:24We worried about the 49er kicker.
08:26He's not the 49er kicker anymore.
08:29We talked about what Brock Purdy needed to do this season.
08:32Brock Purdy's not playing this weekend, and possibly next weekend.
08:37Who's the most important non-Brock Purdy 49er on offense?
08:42Well, some would say maybe George Kittle.
08:44He's not playing for the entire month of September.
08:47The whole thing is different.
08:49Totally.
08:50Six days later, and everything on offense that we thought we knew is largely now different for the 49ers this weekend.
09:00Right.
09:00The tight end is out.
09:02The quarterback is probably out.
09:04And the wide receiver, too, who finally was in, he might be out.
09:09The other wide receiver is amazing.
09:10Jake Tonjes actually gets the ball thrown to him.
09:13So you're right.
09:15So many things are...
09:16New kicker.
09:16New kicker.
09:17And defensively, everything, knock on wood.
09:19I mean, Yator Gros Matos, he probably will be able to go.
09:22I know he was out today with a knee.
09:24But defensively, you're kind of intact.
09:27And you know what?
09:28It's not an indictment on Brock Purdy or Kyle Shanahan if you have to win games 20-19 this year.
09:35That, to me, is okay.
09:37People are going to look at Brock...
09:39Like, if Seattle happens more regularly, two interceptions and a lower point total,
09:44if that happens a lot, fans are going to freak out that we're overpaying Brock Purdy.
09:49I personally don't see it that way.
09:51You just coach and you play to win the game.
09:55No, I don't mind any win.
09:56I don't mind any win.
09:57I do think that if, like...
09:59It depends on what you're talking about.
10:01If you're talking about right now, I totally agree with you.
10:05There is a bigger picture, though.
10:06Like, if the 49ers do go win the NFC West, it's like, all right, well, where are you going?
10:11You know, you watch that Sunday night football game.
10:14You think anybody's beating those two teams if you're grinding out things 20-19?
10:19Probably not.
10:21Like, there's a lot of fire pyro out there.
10:23Yep.
10:24And so if you're going to beat that...
10:26And the weird thing about the Niners is they'll never face it.
10:30They will not face it this year until the playoffs.
10:32So they could be a grinder team and do 21-17 all year long, 17-14 all year long.
10:41They could win a division.
10:42And then they could get into the playoffs and get totally outclassed because a Green Bay or a Washington or a Detroit is waiting for them.
10:51Or if they were to be fortunate enough to get into the Super Bowl, a Baltimore or a Buffalo or something like that could be waiting for them.
10:58And I don't know that we're ever going to know if the Niners, this edition of the Niners, is able to compete on that level.
11:06I don't know.
11:06Yeah, it just depends on two things.
11:08One is obviously health.
11:10And if you don't have your quarterback all year, it's going to be difficult.
11:13I'm not saying that's going to be the case.
11:14But health is first and foremost.
11:17And the second one for me, and this will be an ongoing thread that I'm going to watch throughout the course of the season, is this defense real?
11:24And we mentioned it before, the list of quarterbacks who you're facing are mostly Tier 3 and Tier 4 guys.
11:32You're not facing a lot of high-powered offenses in the regular year.
11:35So the defense might look better than it actually is.
11:39You know what I'm saying?
11:40Facing weaker offenses.
11:41No doubt.
11:42We might overestimate this defense until you go up against one of these teams that has multiple weapons.
11:48I mean, I kind of buy what Stiney was saying in the crossover.
11:51There is a scenario where the game that they just won is one of the hardest games that they will have all year.
11:58From a matchup standpoint, from the standpoint of the things that maybe we're not necessarily thinking about.
12:05The fact that, not that you're just on the road at Seattle, but you're on the road at Seattle week one.
12:11Like, that was where you got to test out all your stuff.
12:14We got rookies playing.
12:16We got to have timing.
12:17We got to have chemistry.
12:18You've got to hear me.
12:19You've got to know where you're going.
12:21And we're doing it on the road at Seattle.
12:24It's one of the hardest places to do it.
12:26Whether the fans are rooting for you or them or whatever.
12:29Doesn't matter.
12:30And they were able to figure it out.
12:33It didn't look great, but they were able to figure that out.
12:35And now you're dealing with a different set of challenges because key players are out.
12:41But if those guys are able to get back sometime soon, I don't know how many environments.
12:47Like, even you brought up the next two toughest games at the Rams and at Tampa.
12:53Those aren't scary environments.
12:55No.
12:56I mean, the Rams is going to be a home game.
12:58And Sunday, honestly, was less scary than it used to be.
13:01You could hear the Niner crowd throughout the whole game.
13:03Might not have been 50-50, but that was not nearly as difficult as it has been in the past.
13:09But, yeah, environment-wise, you're not going to have too many other tough ones.
13:13And I know this Sunday, if you do go with Mac Jones, it's going to be a lot more difficult
13:19knowing that he's making his first start as a Niner.
13:21You're listening to 95.7 The Game, KGMZ FM and HC1 San Francisco and Odyssey Sports Station
13:27in the home of the Golden State Warriors and Valkyries, always live on the free Odyssey app
13:32coming to you live from the Laughing Monk Studios.
13:35Yeah, you've got to bake all of that into your ziti.
13:38Do you know what I mean?
13:39It's like there's a bunch of stuff that was happening in that game that we didn't know.
13:44Like, we knew that George Kittle was out.
13:46And then we found out that Juwan was out.
13:48Now we found out that Brock was running around on a toe injury and a shoulder injury.
13:55There's all kinds of things going on in that football game that we did not know about.
14:02And I'll add in another, which is sort of philosophical.
14:07I don't know what conversation happened on the sideline, but I bet there was something,
14:11something to the effect of, hey, dude, we're scoring touchdowns the rest of the way.
14:16And if not, we're going forward on fourth down.
14:18So, if we're late in the game and we're losing, yeah, dude, huck it up.
14:23We're not getting into a kicker battle.
14:25He's fired.
14:26Don't worry about him.
14:26He doesn't even play for us anymore.
14:28We'll send him out there for extra points and kickoffs.
14:30Other than that, we're done.
14:32We're done.
14:33I don't think anything like that exactly happened.
14:37But there was something.
14:38There was something to me that was suggested, which was let's avoid field goals if at all possible.
14:45Right, and that's what they did, their approach.
14:47So, the kick gets blocked, and it's a 36-yarder.
14:50And you could see Kyle, open mouth, say a word that even John Feliciano, friend of the program,
14:56hasn't uttered.
14:57It starts with a F and rhymes with duck.
15:00And he screamed it as loud as humanly possible.
15:02And so, from then on, yeah, I'm with you.
15:04The next drive, it's fourth and two at the 14.
15:07They pick it up because they don't want to kick a field goal.
15:09But then, fourth and 13, fourth and goal from the 13, oh, heck, now what?
15:15You're not going to go for that.
15:17He kicked it, he made it, and the game was tied.
15:19But I'm kind of with you when you get down all the way to the nitty-gritty.
15:24And I wonder if it was fourth and goal from the four.
15:27If Tonjes doesn't make that catch, we'll never know what they would have done.
15:31Field goal ties it.
15:33Awful tempting, even though you can't wait to cut your kicker.
15:36It's a chippy.
15:37He couldn't miss two of those, could he, Mark?
15:40God, I hope not.
15:42I mean, luckily we didn't have to get to that point.
15:45No, but you're, like, I watched it in a completely different way once you got to the fourth quarter.
15:51Yes, the game was still in the balance and you could win it.
15:54But don't you get to a point where you're like, this is so ridiculous that, like,
15:59I'm not going to watch this anymore with a, like, please make it, please make it.
16:03It's more just like, oh, hell, let's see what happens here.
16:07You going to hook this one, too?
16:10Like, you sort of, it's not give up, but it's just a change in perspective to where I'm like, I don't, what the hell is everybody supposed to do?
16:19The kicker doesn't kick the ball straight.
16:21So, it's a feeling of dread.
16:24And, you know, McCaffrey gets one on that first play, the clock's running, and we're not thinking about the field goal line that they put on the screen.
16:32You know, ooh, the field goal line.
16:33If you can get to the 38, that's Moody's range.
16:36Oh, my God.
16:37The idea of Moody's range was not crossing my mind at all.
16:40I was thinking, they're going to lose this game like they lost all these games last year, where this time it's the kicker and the kicking team.
16:48And, you know, the interception, the second one from Brock, it's like, come on, Brock.
16:53That's not the time for that, kid.
16:55No, I know.
16:56You want, like, actually, what we got to experience last week is what we never got to experience at all last year, which was, ooh, I think we kind of got away with one.
17:05Like, that never happened.
17:06Boy, we gave that feeling to a lot of other fans.
17:10That happened, I don't know, four, five, six times, where the other team won the football game, and they were like, you shouldn't have won that game.
17:18So now, now the Niners got one.
17:21Yeah.
17:21The only one was Tampa last year.
17:23They tried to give that thing away about seven different times.
17:26Sure.
17:26And then they didn't.
17:27Right.
17:27Like, I mean, I won't say that the Seahawks, quote, should have won this game, because they got outplayed.
17:33But when you start sprinkling in all of the other pieces of what took place on Sunday, I do think the Niners kind of got away with one.
17:42And thank goodness.
17:43Thank goodness.
17:44Because now they might be playing the next game or two without their quarterback.
17:48And for me, that changes everything.
17:49It changes the way I assess.
17:51It changes what I hope for, what I expect.
17:53Although, I don't know, man, if I'm listening to everybody, maybe I shouldn't.
17:59The Niners are still favored.
18:00It's always fascinating to me how many people in our city and in our fan base and all of those things.
18:09And I get it.
18:09It's frustration.
18:10And it might be a small percentage of the audience or whatever.
18:13But there's so much sort of like, there's a lot of frustration and lack of trust sometimes that gets directed at Kyle Shanahan.
18:21But it's so fascinating to me then when this happens, and I really think it pins people in a corner.
18:27It's like, if you think Kyle Shanahan's so overrated, and he doesn't know the rules, and he's too conservative.
18:36Always bad clock management.
18:39And damn it, stop calling him a genius.
18:41If that's how you feel, how do you think they're going to win this week?
18:47They don't have their quarterback.
18:48New Orleans is not very good.
18:50That would be an easy counterpoint to that.
18:53If they were home against Arizona this weekend, would they still be favored?
18:58Maybe.
18:58Maybe by a point.
18:59It'd be close.
19:00That'd be a close one.
19:01That would be a tight one, I do believe.
19:03And hopefully we won't have to see this going forward, because it's home to Arizona next Sunday.
19:09And if you still don't have Brock, you won't have George.
19:12We don't know about Juwan.
19:14And you get to that spot, if Arizona's 2-0, and so are you, that might be a pick-em.
19:20Because Arizona, they've got a pretty decent little offense there.
19:24I mean, the quarterback is giving you problems.
19:28I thought the Saints weren't any good.
19:29He had no answer for James Conner recently.
19:31Yeah, I thought New Orleans wasn't any good.
19:32Trey McBride is a very good tight end.
19:35I thought New Orleans wasn't any good.
19:36They're not.
19:37Okay, so what did Arizona do that was impressive?
19:39They won.
19:40Okay.
19:40They won the game.
19:41Yeah.
19:41And, you know, that counts.
19:43It does.
19:44It does.
19:45I don't think they're terrible.
19:46I don't think the 49ers were very impressive.
19:49There was aspects that were...
19:50I don't either.
19:51Ricky Pearsall was impressive.
19:53And Nick Bosa was impressive.
19:55Fred Warner, my goodness, Greg Cosell's got a crush on that man.
19:59A lot of people do.
20:01Yeah, hard not to.
20:01Who was impressive for Arizona?
20:05Oh, I haven't seen the whole game.
20:06I've got to look at the tape, Mark.
20:08I saw a 95-yard touchdown from Marvin Harrison that Kyler Murray threw right over his head.
20:14Yeah.
20:15Threw it right over his head.
20:16Murray threw for a buck 63.
20:18Had a couple touchdowns, no picks.
20:21James Conner, 3.3 yards a carry.
20:23Trey Benson broke a 52-yarder, which allowed him to average 8.6 yards per carry.
20:31But all in all, 52 of his 69 yards came on one run.
20:36Harrison, five catches, 71 yards.
20:39Okay.
20:40Trey McBride, yep.
20:41He did...
20:42I mean, okay.
20:45All right.
20:46I don't have to worry about them for another 10 days.
20:48So, not even thinking about Arizona.
20:51Although, yeah, the picks are in today for the week.
20:54And I like Arizona giving the 6 1โ2.
20:56That's a late game on Sunday, I think.
20:58Who the hell are they playing?
20:59I don't even know who they're playing.
21:01I just wrote down the team I took.
21:03You like them out at 6 1โ2, but we don't even know against who.
21:06Arizona Cardinals this weekend will be...
21:09Oh, they're hosting the Panthers.
21:11They're hosting the Panthers.
21:12Man.
21:14Quarterbacks.
21:14Yeah, Bryce Young.
21:16All right, you can ride with Bryce.
21:18I'm 5-0, so all your little noises and all your clapping with you and your little buddies
21:22back there, y'all need to just check yourselves.
21:25It's Ride the Dibber now.
21:27It is.
21:27The bit's got a new name.
21:29For the moment.
21:30That's temporary.
21:32I mean...
21:32Like, we didn't pull out...
21:33I gotta lose a few in a row before I get the rug pulled out.
21:37I don't know if you get to make that rule.
21:39I don't care about it.
21:40You call it whatever you want.
21:41I'm hot.
21:42You call it whatever you...
21:43You are.
21:44You are.
21:45You are.
21:46I ain't changing the open, though.
21:47That's too much more.
21:48Don't change the open.
21:48No, no, no, no.
21:49That is, isn't it.
21:49Oh, Fade the Dibber.
21:51I like what you've done with it.
21:52You've done a lot of good things there.
21:53You could just do it live.
21:55I could.
21:56The texter earlier said,
21:58Mac Jones and the best talent he's ever played with was at Alabama.
22:02Alabama.
22:03Just glanced at it.
22:04Brian Robinson Jr.
22:05Yep.
22:06So it'll be a reunion.
22:07Teammate.
22:08Devontae Smith.
22:09Sure.
22:10117 catches that year.
22:11Right.
22:12And who was the other receiver?
22:13A guy named Jalen Waddell.
22:16Jalen Waddell.
22:17Najee Harris.
22:18Najee Harris.
22:19He had 1,466 yards in 13 games.
22:24Bryce Young, the backup quarterback.
22:25The aforementioned Bryce Young.
22:27And it goes on and on.
22:28I mean, bananas.
22:30He threw for almost 5,000.
22:334,500 yards.
22:3441 touchdowns.
22:36Four picks.
22:36My favorite part is when somebody with an Alabama, like a Southern accent,
22:40will be like, you can't prove that we're paying our players.
22:46Yeah, we can.
22:48Yeah, we can.
22:49I was talking to somebody about this last week.
22:52I was at a game.
22:53This is 1,000 years ago.
22:55At the Rose Bowl.
22:56College football.
22:58Probably BCS days.
23:00BCS National Championship game.
23:02Miami versus Nebraska.
23:04I think Miami had Ken Dorsey as their quarterback.
23:07Wow.
23:08Miramani.
23:08Yeah.
23:09Wide receivers.
23:10Andre Johnson.
23:11Santana Moss.
23:12Running backs.
23:13Clinton Portis.
23:14Willis McGahee.
23:15Frank Gore.
23:16Tight ends.
23:17Kellen Winslow Jr.
23:18Jeremy Shockey.
23:19They're all.
23:20That's just the offense.
23:23And Reed is playing safety.
23:24Oh, yeah.
23:25I'm like, holy crap.
23:28Yeah, prove, prove, prove.
23:30Tell us that you're paying your players without telling us that you're paying your players.
23:34They just recruited their butts off that year, Mark.
23:36They did great.
23:36They did great.
23:37So they're all muchaca.
23:39Yeah.
23:40They did great.
23:41They know people out there or not, but they did great.
23:42They both did well.
23:42I, they just knew all the time.
23:43OK, they don't necessarily build your fans, but you hear them.
23:45They gave me 10 days when you're trying to game and see you.
23:45All right.
23:46So let's go crazy.
23:47They don't do good.
23:47But where are you going to win you?
23:49You can see the offense you're going to spend time next to where you are.
23:50Oh, yeah.
23:50Nooo!
23:51You can look behind that.
23:51Not by the way, man.
23:52I think they do'll run you.
23:53But I mean what turns out I think that if bottles in expensive food.
23:54Like, then, you lose everything.
23:56You know,ํal money and think it will get worse.
