00:00I was just perusing Twitter, because now that's just what I do all day.
00:06Yeah, you're back.
00:07And I've got my account back.
00:09This is so funny.
00:11Jason Reed, longtime NFL reporter, and he's with ESPN right now.
00:17So I think he's based in Kansas City.
00:20He must be listening to Kansas City Sports Radio right now.
00:23And he says, the way some Chiefs fans go off weekly on the GM and the coaching staff is really something.
00:34And then he lists what's happened over the last decade.
00:38And I know we all know it, but I want you to listen to it.
00:42All right, the list of what this GM has messed up.
00:44Listen to this.
00:45Okay.
00:46Nine straight AFC West titles.
00:48Big deal.
00:49Seven consecutive AFC Championship game appearances.
00:54Wait, seven straight appearances.
00:56In the AFC Championship game.
00:58Man.
00:59Five Super Bowl berths during that time.
01:03And three Super Bowl rings.
01:07And they were the first team in 20 years to win back-to-back Super Bowl titles.
01:14And people are calling up the flagship station and ripping them for their inactivity today.
01:18Right.
01:18How the hell did they not get Brees Hall?
01:20Brees Hall's on Twitter.
01:21Says he wants out.
01:21Why did you not do it?
01:23And so it's...
01:25They are five and four, Mark.
01:26They're on the ropes.
01:27They are flirting with disaster.
01:30It's true.
01:31But I...
01:32Listen.
01:33The Niners have none of that.
01:36The Niners don't...
01:37They have a little of that.
01:37They have a little.
01:38But they don't have any Super Bowl rings.
01:40But two Super Bowl appearances.
01:43Let's see.
01:44Two other NFC Championship game appearances.
01:47Right?
01:49And...
01:49So that's been the Kyle Shanahan regime.
01:54And we're no different.
01:56I don't think, you know...
01:57I don't know if anybody on our station today has come out hot on the 49ers inactivity.
02:04Can't really speak for the Joes because the trade deadline was still going when they were done.
02:09But Steini and Goo had their takes.
02:11It sounded pretty similar to what our takes are.
02:14Disappointed.
02:15Mild disappointment.
02:16Thought it would be nice to give the locker room something.
02:19But I get why they didn't go all in.
02:21But I don't know.
02:22Is anybody feeling like this whole thing is just out of line?
02:26We do hear it a lot.
02:28And I...
02:29You know, for the life of me, I still don't know if that's just the lunatic fringe.
02:34Is that just...
02:35Are you just the crazy...
02:36Those of you who hate Shanahan and are like,
02:39He should either be fired or he'll never win the big one.
02:42Or he chokes in big moments.
02:44Like, are you trolling?
02:46Or is that real?
02:48Is there a faction of the fan base that would really love to see somebody else coach the 49ers?
02:54The 49ers?
02:55Yes.
02:55Absolutely they would.
02:56You think so?
02:56Yes.
02:57Because...
02:57Like an actual group that is, I don't know, 10% or something like that.
03:04Might be smaller than that.
03:05Might be bigger than that.
03:06But I like the ballpark where you put that.
03:07And it's the nature of people who are either not patient or they think that he is smug and arrogant.
03:16He can't game manage.
03:17He doesn't use his timeouts.
03:19He doesn't know what the overtime rules are.
03:21He's a choker.
03:22He's too conservative.
03:23And I could go on and on with what the Lunatic Fringe actually might think.
03:28And, yeah, you can look at that.
03:29And I'm looking at my notes right here.
03:32Super Bowl appearances since the year 2000.
03:34So this century.
03:37And the Niners have three of them.
03:39Kansas City's got five, which is the second most.
03:42New England's got nine appearances.
03:44Philly's got four.
03:45There are 12 teams that have not been since the year 2000.
03:49So, 20 teams have been.
03:51The Niners are in a small group.
03:53The Rams, Seattle, the Giants, and Pittsburgh.
03:56They've all been to three.
03:57And some of those teams have actually won one.
04:00The Giants have gotten a couple, actually.
04:02And Seattle got one.
04:03And, sure.
04:04Should the Niners have had one of the three that they've been to?
04:07Yeah.
04:08They rallied in New Orleans and lost.
04:10They blew two leads against Kansas City and lost.
04:13Yeah, but I like.
04:13But at least they're in the mix.
04:15But I guess my thought process, and I'm not going to ask you to do this on the fly,
04:19but all I'm really interested in is what has the league done since Kyle and John started?
04:242017, right?
04:25And the rest of it is kind of irrelevant to our conversation today.
04:29I'm not here to rip Jim Harbaugh or Carmen Policy or anyone.
04:33You know what I mean?
04:33The past is the past.
04:35What matters is Kyle Shanahan, John Lynch, Parag Marate,
04:40and how they are performing against their competition.
04:44So, that would be, I think, nine seasons, right?
04:46Right.
04:47This would be the ninth season.
04:49Okay, so they've only completed eight seasons.
04:50Philly's been to three.
04:53And Philly's won one.
04:55Right.
04:55Rams have been to two.
04:56Rams won one.
04:58Niners have been to two.
04:59And won zero.
04:59But the Niners, so what you're telling me,
05:02in Kyle Shanahan's and John Lynch's completed years,
05:06half of them end up in at least the NFC title game.
05:10Right, right.
05:11Okay.
05:11Four of the eight.
05:12Okay.
05:13Yeah, and the other four are just disasters,
05:15which if you give me, let me ask you this.
05:18Yeah, that's a fair.
05:20Well, would you rather have eight years of, like, the Pittsburgh Steelers,
05:24which is you're 9-8, you're 10-7, you make the playoffs, and that's it?
05:28I can already answer.
05:29Or would you rather have four good runs and four disasters?
05:33Although one of them is not a disaster because it was year one.
05:36I mean, if you're going to play this game.
05:38No, but it's not.
05:38I mean, like, it's not.
05:40It's not a disaster.
05:41Last year was a disaster.
05:43I was listening to Bonte this morning with the Joes,
05:46and he was going back and railing against what they did that year in the draft,
05:50saying you had Deshaun Watson the first year.
05:53You had Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes,
05:55and instead of getting your franchise quarterback, you took Solomon Thomas.
05:59Yeah.
05:59So, some people look at that first year and think,
06:02well, it didn't have to be a disaster,
06:04and then you panicked and you went out and got Jimmy Garoppolo,
06:07which he eventually took you to a Super Bowl.
06:10Yeah, but, like, I guess my response to that would be,
06:13first of all, I think it's hilarious that people are still putting Deshaun Watson
06:17in that sentence.
06:19That's not a compliment.
06:20That was not a good pick.
06:22What the hell did Houston get out of that?
06:24They had a couple of sort of little dances, mildly in the playoffs, and what?
06:31And what?
06:31Then they ended up getting a huge headache, and then it became, listen to me now,
06:36the worst contract in the history of the National Football League.
06:42Maybe sports.
06:42So much so, right, so much so that it is still hanging around their neck,
06:46and other owners of other teams had to potentially conspire with one another
06:52to stop the market from going the way it was going because of Deshaun.
06:57So, color me thankful that the 49ers did not draft Deshaun Watson.
07:01Now, the Mahomes conversation is a very different one,
07:04but I also wonder, how do you think Patrick Mahomes would have looked
07:08if you had tossed him as a rookie in on that roster?
07:11Yep.
07:11How do you think that would have gone?
07:12And that's what I've always said.
07:14I think that was their thought process.
07:15They weren't ready for a quarterback.
07:17And I do need to clarify, Philly's actually 2-1 in Super Bowl
07:20since the Niners started with Shannon.
07:22That first year, they won it.
07:23They beat New England.
07:24So, yeah, other than that, NFC-wise, you've got Tampa.
07:29They won it with Tommy.
07:31And then, yeah, it's the Niners.
07:33It's the Rams.
07:34And it's Philadelphia.
07:35All of that said, like, I'm not going to bed tonight being like,
07:40yeah, I'm stoked that the Niners did nothing.
07:45I don't like it.
07:46I get it.
07:47I don't like it.
07:49And I do think that this, it reeks of two things,
07:53and one is a compliment and one is not.
07:55The compliment I'll give them is I always love it.
07:59Even when I don't agree with someone's plan, boy, I love their stick-to-itiveness.
08:04I love it.
08:04This is what I originally loved about Gabe Kapler and Farhan Zaidi
08:08when people asked me, what is it you liked about them?
08:11Well, they had their plan, and, boy, they were going to stick to it.
08:14Now, it turned out to not work, so they lost everybody.
08:17The Kyle Shanahan-John Lynch plans, I would argue, have largely worked.
08:22And this year, they are really sticking to it, and I respect that.
08:26That said, it's not necessarily the plan that I would have backed.
08:31And when plans change, I believe you've got to adjust and evolve.
08:36And if your plan was to be 3-6, but you're 6-3, I think you've got to say hello
08:43to the players that got you there.
08:45It's interesting hearing that from you because you're so processed more than results,
08:49and what I'm hearing you say is that the results that you've had,
08:52you're 6-3, should change your process.
08:55And I don't know...
08:56Mildly.
08:57Yeah, and I do believe that they probably...
09:00I believe they tried to go out there and make the mild moves.
09:03For sure they did.
09:04And the mild moves weren't there, and so their process was what Shanahan said back in August,
09:09and that sound should be on your board all year because he told us in the preseason
09:13that, you know, we just want to make the tournament, and then we're going to go
09:16and see what we can do from there.
09:19He was setting those as the expectations.
09:21So the process has not changed.
09:24The results are different, but the process is still the same.
09:26Real quick, let's go to BPA.
09:28Nick Friedle is going to join us here in two minutes, but I want to get this call in.
09:33Hey, Brian, what's going on?
09:34Thanks for calling.
09:36Good afternoon.
09:38Good afternoon to you.
09:39Miss you, brother.
09:39Where have you been?
09:40What the hell, Brian?
09:43I'm around.
09:46Us too.
09:46In my opinion, the message is F off to the fan base, but spend your money.
09:54We will take your money.
09:55Jed wants another wing in the Los Altos Hills Mansion.
09:59They are definitely become very much a penny-pinching organization in the last 12 months.
10:05I don't know why exactly.
10:07I think it's worth a deeper look.
10:09But, yeah, you know, I don't think the state of the 49ers and the Kyle Shanahan era is great.
10:16All the guys they gave money to can't find the field.
10:18Their prize number one pick, blown ACL out for the year when he was on the field with three minutes left,
10:23and the blowout shouldn't have even been on the field.
10:25Yeah, I don't think things are great.
10:27Sean McVay has clearly passed up Kyle.
10:30But, yeah, let's talk about how great they are, I guess, right?
10:32I mean, they should have made a move.
10:34I think they're 6-3.
10:35I think they owe it to their fans to do something.
10:38They barely have a serviceable defensive line.
10:42They don't have a serviceable defensive line.
10:44They have no edge rushers, healthy edge rushers.
10:48Yeah, I think they should have done something.
10:50Make it look like you care, maybe, right?
10:52But, yeah, I guess, you know, Super Bowl's in Santa Clara this year,
10:56but it's a bye year, I guess.
10:58Yeah, Brian, I agree with Brian that, again, could have and should have done something.
11:05I'm not going to go so far to call an organization penny-pinching over the last 12 months
11:09when they've extended Brock Purdy, Fred Warner, and George Kittle,
11:12and Diomino Lenore, by the way, and I don't blame them for when people get hurt.
11:17That's just me.
11:18I don't think that's fair in football to blame an organization when their players get hurt.
11:24And when you're up 34-17, and I'm looking at my notes, four minutes to go,
11:28you can't just take out Mikel Williams.
11:30You can't just take out everyone.
11:32This is not college football.
11:34You don't just pull your first-team defense off the field.
11:37You continue to play when you're out there playing football.
11:40They also don't have that many defensive linemen.
11:42Like, which ones you're trying to protect Mikel Williams and put who in?
11:46Exactly.
11:47Kalia, Jordan, who are you putting in?
11:49They're already out there playing.
11:50Right.
11:50They matter, too.
11:51Exactly.
11:52And some might believe they matter more.
11:54Yeah, and I'm not sure about the penny-pinching, either.
11:57Yeah, that doesn't sound right.
11:58The coffers are full after they just sold off about, what, 5% or 10% of the franchise.
