00:00All right, second down. Jones, pressure in his face, throws chance, has a catch, and it's loose, and the Rams will pick it up. Cameron Kitchens with some blockers. Turnover, and the Rams have it after what would have been a big play. Cam Curl punched it out.
00:18Now, back to Will and Dibby on 95-7, the game.
00:23Yep. That's the error.
00:26That was the error out of the balloon for me.
00:27Out of the balloon, yeah.
00:27Right there. That play.
00:29Okay. Rams, touchdown. Niners, three and out. Rams, touchdown. Niners, they're on the move.
00:35Yeah, they're moving the ball. They're like, they're rough.
00:38And then Jawan, 13-yard catch. Boom. The ball is out.
00:44Jawan Jennings is out.
00:46The ball is out. And it's funny, because I was watching again today, and I was like, I thought of you when that happened.
00:52You thought of me?
00:53I thought of you because...
00:55That's nice of you. Thank you for thinking of me.
00:57Well, I thought of you all weekend, actually, because I took care of you, and you know...
01:01You did.
01:01Thank you for that, of course.
01:02But when I saw that, and I saw Jawan go to the sideline and take off his helmet, and I saw the red hair, I thought, man, what does Mark always say?
01:12Like, these wide receivers with their off-season shenanigans, and when they come back, they don't play like they used to play.
01:20It doesn't work.
01:21Yeah.
01:21It doesn't work.
01:22It doesn't work.
01:23And this is not totally like, oh, Jawan, your holdout, whatever it was, your calf, but, you know, when you come back and you play, you don't play as well as you used to play, and this was like, you know, the ball is up.
01:38Yeah.
01:39We're going to go to the phones.
01:40Anyway.
01:40I'm going to get that officiating rant.
01:41I thought of you.
01:42No, but I do have a quick theory here.
01:44I really do, and it's the Klay Thompson.
01:46I'm going to nickname it the Klay Thompson theory.
01:49I think when you head to life, whether it's work or a relationship or parenting or anything, I think if you head out into the world pissed off trying to prove something, they're not going to go well.
02:05That's my theory.
02:06Simple theory.
02:08Can't prove it to a man and to a woman, but that's my theory.
02:13I just don't.
02:14I've suffered from this at times in my life where if you are out in the world trying to prove something to people other than you, you're in trouble.
02:27You're in a bad spot.
02:29You're going to make bad decisions.
02:31You're going to do bad things.
02:32Your motivations are coming from the wrong place.
02:35Motivation.
02:35And this is what wide receivers, or anyone for that matter, are doing when they're mad all offseason, and then, like football's an emotional sport, so these guys are all going out there, kind of, you know, trying to do the bleep you to the opponent thing.
02:51But when you're out there, and now you have to add in your own employer, potential other future employers, and you're trying to show something to somebody, and oh, by the way, you don't even have any real power over it because someone else has to deliver the ball to you.
03:07And he did.
03:07And you're just, it's not going to go well, more often than not.
03:12Yeah.
03:12And that's what I think happened to Debo, and then it happened to Brandon, and now it's happening to Juwan.
03:16And he hasn't been bad this year.
03:18Nope.
03:19But it's been a weird year.
03:21Up, down, up, down.
03:23It's just like the Niner schedule the last seven weeks.
03:25Exactly.
03:25Totally.
03:25And on that same drive, he actually had a false start on second and seven earlier in the drive where a wide receiver should never have a false start, and so fine.
03:35Okay, second and 12 now, and Kittle picks it up, and then Juwan a catch, and then Juwan a catch, and then boop, that ball got just straight punched out.
03:45And you go from 14-0 down to, okay, maybe we're about to get back in this thing to, nope, they've got a good field position.
03:53They score again, 21-0 night-night.
03:56We are live in the Laughing Monk Studios.
03:58Laughing Monk is righteously brewed in San Francisco.
04:01Thrilled that you are with us.
04:02Thank you so much.
04:03It means the world the day after a game always, even if it's not a victory.
04:08You know what?
04:09We've got too many people that want to weigh in.
04:10I'm going to hold that.
04:11We'll do the quick officiating rant here in about 10 minutes.
04:14Okay.
04:14Because, yeah, I don't want to make everybody wait.
04:17Let's go to Mason in Beaumont.
04:18Hey, Mason, what's going on?
04:20Thank you for calling.
04:20What's up?
04:22Hey, guys.
04:23Glad to talk to you.
04:24Maybe I don't get the chance to call in much, but I listen to you guys all the time.
04:26No, thank you.
04:27But welcome.
04:29But this is the thing I want to point out to a lot of 49ers fans.
04:32I've been to 49ers fans since 1980, so I've got some years on me.
04:35But here's the thing.
04:36For all you guys who are upset about what happened last week or didn't happen at the trade deadline, you have to take a deep breath.
04:44The 49ers did not tell you last week that this was not a Super Bowl roster.
04:48They told you that in the offseason.
04:50They told you we are going to have to rearrange the deck.
04:54We no longer can sustain a certain roster that we paid out money to that we had go to the Super Bowl a couple years ago.
05:01In the NFL, you get a certain window with a certain group of players when they're elite, and if you win, then you get the cherry on the take.
05:10And unfortunately, the 49ers, as we know, didn't cash in on the roster that they had a couple years ago.
05:16So now they're having to redo it.
05:18Now you have injuries to your top players that only exacerbate the situation, the fact that this is a middle-of-the-pack roster.
05:25And one trade last week wasn't going to change their odds of winning the Super Bowl.
05:30So here's this.
05:31We are now having to reassess the fact that the reason why they're 6-4 is because when it comes to coaching, game preparation, getting the most out of your players, we got one of the best coaching staffs in the NFL.
05:44But what the 49ers do show, at least we've seen the past few years, in order to retool quickly, and the Rams did this too, by the way.
05:52They no longer had the same team that they won a Super Bowl with.
05:54They retooled, and they have hit on their draft picks.
05:57When it comes to the 49ers and their recent draft picks, it's kind of sketchy.
06:01So you've got a great coaching staff, but what will determine this current window in the next few years is can they get the young pieces in to get this team back to where it was?
06:16And if you have – that's where most of your criticism is going to be.
06:19This season, they're making chicken salad, chicken bleak this year.
06:23They're doing an amazing job getting the most out of what they have, but there was no way this team was going far anyway.
06:29Mason, thank you.
06:30I actually really, almost to a T, I agree with this take.
06:34The only thing that I would change in what he said, and what Mason basically said, is they didn't tell you this at the trade deadline.
06:39They told you this all offseason.
06:40I would say they did tell you this all offseason, but it was subtle, and then they told you again at the trade deadline because their point at the trade deadline is even further down the road than it was in the offseason.
06:55Because I think in the offseason, it's like, all right, we're going to have to blend some really young talent in with our veteran talent, and then the hope – and Kyle said this before the year started – the hope is that they get better each week.
07:11And by the end of the year, we've got an actual defense that's kind of humming, and maybe we can get ourselves into the tournament and then do some things.
07:20Now, that's under the idea that Fred Warner and Nick Bosa play for your team.
07:25So now at the trade deadline, it's their original point, and double it, because it's now we're really – we're really not going to reinforce this.
07:34So I've said it all along, and I think it's a hard point to make.
07:37I'm mad about the trade deadline, but I understand it.
07:39Haven't you ever gotten into a conversation with a family member, and you're like, what you did totally just ticked me off?
07:45I get it, though.
07:46I get it.
07:47Or at work.
07:48You know what I mean?
07:49Yep.
07:49Like, ever been through a contract negotiation where they're like, you know, this is kind of where the industry's at, so we'd like to double your salary, but we're not going to.
07:58And you're like, I'm mad about that.
08:00Right.
08:00But I get it.
08:01But that's kind of where I was at the trade deadline.
08:03So I'm still mad about it.
08:05I get it.
08:06But it sucks.
08:07Their defense is going to be bad all year.
08:09Well, even if they tried to, like, double down on that, what would that be?
08:13It would be, like, bring in an edge rusher.
08:16Okay.
08:16You're still not a great defense.
08:18Bring in a linebacker and an edge.
08:20Okay.
08:20You might be better, but are you better enough to actually, like, make a run?
08:24So I do think what you're saying is factual, where, you know, you look at what this team is, if they had Bosa and Warner still, you'd be a different team.
08:34But you're not going to replace Bosa or Warner, so what are you trying to do?
08:38You're going to try to give the young guys all the chance they get, and you're hoping that, you know, you can have an offense that's good enough to be complimentary and protect the defense, and yesterday they weren't.
08:48But you love that word, complimentary.
08:50Right.
08:50So, to me, I think it's actually, it's, I get what you're saying, but the idea that, oh, one player is not going to change everything.
09:01Right.
09:02But it could a little bit, because, like, Nick Bosa is one player.
09:06Now, you can't find Nick Bosa.
09:08No.
09:08But you could find somebody that could have some sort of a trickle-down effect and help the other guys, and then suddenly Bryce Huff looks better.
09:18And then, suddenly, Kalia Davis looks better.
09:21And you're not going to make all the plays.
09:24You might still give up 25 points a game.
09:26But how about not 35 points a game?
09:29That's kind of what I'm getting at.
09:30Who was the, I'm going to ask you real quick.
09:32Let's see if you remember.
09:33Okay.
09:34Who was the player I actually wanted at the deadline?
09:38Not a huge name, but not dumpster diving either.
09:41Do you remember the name I really wanted?
09:44Ah, boy, I don't remember.
09:46Okay, New York Jets, Will McDonald.
09:50That's right.
09:51How many sacks he had yesterday?
09:53Eleven?
09:55Almost.
09:58Four.
09:59In four?
10:00Four sacks yesterday.
10:01Wow.
10:02And no, he was not going to call for a first or second rounder.
10:06Or even a third rounder.
10:08And yes, he's under contract next year.
10:10That team's hot, though.
10:12Oh, my God.
10:12They've won two in a row.
10:14They have.
10:15They're now two and seven.
10:17And they're still doing it with smoke and mirrors.
10:18Yeah.
10:19Two special teams touchdowns.
10:20Was that right?
10:21That was crazy, yeah.
10:22Yeah.
10:22Yeah.
