00:00I want to use this Niners run as an example of something else
00:05that I feel like comes up a lot in Bay Area sports.
00:09In fact, it came up the last time the Warriors won a championship.
00:15When you get to the halfway point, sometimes,
00:17I mean, I hear people doing it already with the Warriors,
00:19and the Warriors are only 30 games in.
00:21So we're not even at the halfway point yet.
00:24I think it's a repetitive thing, and I understand it.
00:27Fans get to a point where they're frustrated by the product,
00:31and they'll go, just play the young people.
00:36Just play the young people.
00:38Hell, we are about what?
00:40We're five weeks removed from people I know who are smart human beings
00:46who said things like, just save Brock for next year.
00:50Ah, yeah. Go with the hot hand.
00:52Well, but not even just hot hand, but like, ooh, that toe, that's a thing.
00:56Patrick Willis, am I right? You've got to save him.
01:00Big contract, don't risk it.
01:03Even can we get out of the contract?
01:05Like, ooh, what a mistake that baby was.
01:08The best stuff in sports is the unexpected,
01:13and I know that, you know,
01:15this is kind of like every trade deadline with the Giants.
01:18Okay, you're one game over .500.
01:20Should you go for it?
01:21Like, don't be stupid.
01:22This isn't going to go somewhere good.
01:24Well, sometimes it does.
01:29And I think that if you are a real sports team in a real market,
01:34you exhaust that first.
01:37I think there is a line, and sometimes it's hard to find that line.
01:41When's the right time to just be like, white flag this sucker?
01:44Or this isn't going anywhere good.
01:47So, yeah.
01:47For the Colts, it was last night.
01:49That's a good point.
01:49And so now you're probably going to take Phillip Rivers
01:52and give him the Ariana Grande, thank you, next.
01:54I agree.
01:55You're going to play the rook
01:56and have Phillip just chill with his ten kids up in the booth,
01:59and thanks for coming back.
02:00Yeah, let's go.
02:01Let's get some info.
02:02Right.
02:02We don't need info on whether or not Phillip's our future quarterback.
02:06He's 44 years old.
02:08So, I just look at this Niner season, though,
02:12and they were already playing young guys on defense.
02:16But anybody who kind of had that thought,
02:19Fred Warner leaves, you're 4-2.
02:22And I think there was the thought of like, well, you're 4-2,
02:25so you've got to play that out.
02:26But this isn't going anywhere.
02:30So, let's go.
02:32So, this is kind of an in-the-weeds example.
02:35Get Nick Martin on the field for crying out loud.
02:38Get him in there.
02:40Let's see what he's got.
02:43And I just, this is an example of why sometimes that's the wrong take.
02:50It is sometimes the wrong take a third of a way or halfway through of a season
02:55that has been frustrating or daunting to say, ah, screw it.
03:01Let's just get, let's gather info.
03:03And hell, if we lose games along the way, then yay, better draft pick.
03:08I think, I think at this level of money that it costs to be a good sports fan
03:14and the level of money that they're worth and that they make
03:18and all of these things, you, this is what you owe the fans.
03:22You don't owe them a press conference.
03:24You don't owe them an explanation.
03:25You owe them your effort to win.
03:29You owe them, like, let's exhaust that possibility first
03:34before we go into info-gathering mode.
03:37Because amazing can happen.
03:40And the unexpected can happen.
03:42And we're watching it right now.
03:44We're living it with this football team.
03:46Yeah, and you're in a spot where you can still be the one seed
03:49through all the adversity.
03:50And even if you're not the one seed, as I already detailed,
03:53doesn't mean you can't go out there and still go in and maybe win the Super Bowl.
03:57And this would be such an improbable run if it continued all the way into February
04:02and you won the game at home through all this adversity.
04:06And Shanahan gets the monkey off his back.
04:08And he finally can win the big one.
04:10There's so many ancillary stories that would be a part of this unbelievable run.
04:15But I'm with you.
04:16Here we are, 11-4.
04:18They're going to the playoffs.
04:20And, yeah, that's been very satisfying.
04:22Last year was frustrating because they were blowing games, games that were winnable.
04:27They were blowing them.
04:28This year they've had these games and they're winnable and they have won them.
04:32And that's what makes this even more just kind of special is the contrast of last year
04:37where it was, you know, drop passes and blown coverages and a special teams group
04:43that was hirotious and, you know, all the rest of the frustrations that you had last year
04:48and quarterbacks we'd never heard of, an unbelievably tough schedule in rest disadvantage
04:55and back-to-back snow games in Green Bay and Buffalo.
04:58There was a lot of things that just went against you last year.
05:01Self-inflicted many of them.
05:02A lot of them.
05:02But this year, and I was thinking about this last night, Mark,
05:04this team is benefiting from schedule, Sam.
05:08We know that.
05:09And they have a really good backup quarterback.
05:11But also, last night they had two penalties.
05:14One of them was kind of a goofy, diameter, or I want to punch the ball out after the play.
05:19What the hell was that?
05:20He was just trying to, you know.
05:21No, why was that a penalty?
05:22Why is that like?
05:23I mean, I thought that that was a soft unsportsmanlike.
05:26They tried to punch the ball out.
05:28The guy had been down for about eight minutes.
05:30No, he was laying on top of a niner.
05:32Now, I don't know how long ago the whistle had blown,
05:36but I also know that as a football player that's maniacally running after the offensive players,
05:42if I saw that, I would be worried that he wasn't down.
05:47And yes, I would go try to create a fumble.
05:50Yeah, try to punch it out.
05:51But he just saunters up and punches the guy.
05:53But he didn't really hit.
05:55No.
05:55Like, he didn't.
05:55So that's why I was like, why are we?
05:57Neither did DK Metcalf.
05:58Yeah, why?
05:59What do you mean neither did DK Metcalf?
06:00He tried to punch the fan in the face, and he kind of swooshed the hair.
06:03Oh, well, that's enough with a fan.
06:05Oh, it's enough.
06:06Yeah.
06:06I get it.
06:06But I don't think it's, I don't, I didn't think the demo thing was penalty worthy.
06:10I thought it was a little bit of a softy, but it just stood out to me because that was
06:14one of only two penalties.
06:15And, you know, if your defense is not going to be great, and they're, you know, middle
06:19of the pack in most things, well, can they just bend but don't break?
06:23Yeah.
06:23Can your offense do enough to make it easy on the defense?
06:27Yeah.
06:27And part of that is no self-inflicted wounds.
06:31Like, you're not holding, you're not giving up illegal formations and false starts, all
06:36the parking tickets, as I like to call them, pre-snap, the pre-snap crap, where it's, okay,
06:42too many men in the huddle, or illegal formation, like, they had a tackle, he was lined up in the
06:46backfield.
06:47Attention to detail, this team has been phenomenal.
06:49They've been clean.
06:50And, you know, you mentioned the turnover thing earlier.
06:54Where do the Bears rank in turnovers?
06:56Number one.
06:57Number one.
06:58So check this out.
06:59I just saw this on social media.
07:03The Bears' defense, so far this year, when they have turnovers, okay, when turnovers are
07:13included, when they get turnovers in a game, they are number 12 in EPA per play.
07:21When they don't, they're number 28.
07:23Wow.
07:23So, like, I know that that's just letters and numbers.
07:28Just put it this way.
07:30The Bears are not that good of a defense if the Niners take care of the ball.
07:34If the Niners don't take care of the ball, the Bears become a top half of the league defense.
07:39But even at that, like, they have so many takeaways in their 12th.
07:43Yep.
07:44Like, the Bears' defense is not great.
07:46They're very opportunistic.
07:48Right.
07:48And the teams kind of mirror each other in many ways other than the turnovers because the Bears
07:53are going to want to run it and keep it away from Brock and company.
07:56Right.
07:56And so, like, I know now we're doing the whole, like, Brock is in his bag because he's had
08:00back-to-back weeks that are amazing.
08:02We're three games removed from a football game where we walked in here and we were like,
08:07it's a good thing that the Niners won.
08:09But I don't know.
08:10Maybe Mac Jones.
08:12Like, he threw three interceptions the last time he was on Monday Night Football.
08:17There was a stat that popped up in the middle of that game that was like Brock's career on
08:23Monday Night, like, five touchdowns and 11 picks.
08:26Wow.
08:27Because Carolina and Baltimore.
08:29Wow.
08:30That's eight picks or seven picks just in those two games.
08:33That's crazy.
08:33So he exercised a few demons last night on that front.
08:36He sure did.
08:37And, I mean, the Colts made it kind of easy on him where they didn't really rush the passer
08:42that effectively.
08:44And you can't blitz because you're down your two starting corners.
08:47So it was a lot of just easy pitch and catch for old Brock Purdy.
08:51Brock, yeah.
08:51The whole offense was just, again, you could tell kind of early.
08:56I think the Colts go down on the opening drive.
08:58They score a touchdown.
08:59A little frustrating because, whatever, they had some penalties.
09:03Third down.
09:03Phillip gets in the end zone.
09:06He's gyrating.
09:07He's screaming.
09:08The crowd is all into it.
09:09The Niners get the ball and go beep, boop, bop, touchdown.
09:13And you're like, oh, all right.
09:15We're fine.
09:16We're fine.
09:16And then they punch the ball out on the ensuing kickoff.
09:19And you're like, never mind.
09:20Everything's cool here.
09:20And the Niners offense, it was evident early that Thomas Morstead was, again, not necessary.
09:26Just chill.
09:27Just chill, team.
09:28Send him home.
09:28We'll call you when we need you.
09:30Seriously.
09:30I would let him just stay at his apartment for these next two games.
09:33We'll call you when we need you.
09:35Which we probably won't need you.
09:36Well, these are better defenses.
09:38Yeah.
09:39Go ahead and just hang out.
09:40But, you know, you mentioned the beep, bop, boop all the way down the field.
09:44And it's Demarcus Robinson who cashes it in.
09:46And it's like, oh, that's right.
09:47They do throw in the ball occasionally.
09:49And Kendrick Bourne gets a catch and gets his bonus.
09:52And then, oh, we're going to challenge it.
09:54And it gets overturned.
09:56Bye-bye bonus.
09:57And then he gets it later.
09:58I don't know if you saw, but he did like the, he papered the sky with some imaginary money.
10:02That's got to be awesome.
10:03Good for him.
10:04Yeah.
10:05Oh, God.
10:05What a feeling.
10:07What a feeling.
10:07Yeah.
10:08What if you caught a ball and you're like, that's, you get $500,000.
10:11Well, just think about like Jawan Jennings.
10:14Jawan Jennings was holding in with a calf.
10:16Was it calf or cash?
10:18And he got it resolved.
10:20He's had another good year.
10:21Demarcus Robinson was in trouble with the law.
10:23He had to sit and wait and wait and wait.
10:26Now he's making an impact.
10:28Kendrick Bourne was just hanging around somebody's practice squad.
10:32And he comes out and had two monster games.
10:33One of them on Grandy's fantasy team against me.
10:36I'll never forget it.
10:37So this receiving core has been, it's kind of like the, uh, the misfits.
