00:00Y'all feel good when Jake Moody's lining up a kick? Let's just talk this out. 888-957-9570.
00:07It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. That's exactly what it was.
00:11And if you're going to have the best of times, you know what Jake Moody's day was on Saturday?
00:15It was very much like what Texas and Alabama do in the college football season when they lose week one to Ohio State.
00:22But then, it doesn't matter. You come back, you win the SEC title game, and even if you've got two losses, everybody will campaign for you.
00:32And you end up in the national title game anyway, even though Boise State went undefeated and you have two losses.
00:39It's okay, because yes, there is a built-in advantage, and that's that you are a third-round draft pick and this team would like you to succeed.
00:48And secondly, like they say in college football, if you're going to lose a game, do it early.
00:53And so that's what Jake did. If you're going to miss a kick, do it early, because the last thought in our head was,
00:59attaboy, Jake. And so that's going to keep him around a little while, but it's not going to change the fact that, to me,
01:06there were two poor kicks, and one of them is, yes, it's not a big deal. You miss a 53-yarder, that happens.
01:11But I don't think it was exactly the day that Jake needs to make everybody feel good about him being the 49er kicker.
01:21And I don't think that everyone's going to feel good until you get through a big part of the season,
01:26and he does late game special things or end of the half special things.
01:31Fans are in a certain mindset with Jake Moody, and it's partly draftism,
01:36and I appreciate Evan calling it back to this show, and you in particular, because Jake Moody, as a third-round pick,
01:43is held to a higher standard than if he just would have been a street-free agent.
01:47And that's, it's neither fair nor unfair, it's just the reality of the situation.
01:52And I look at Jake Moody's performance in the preseason game, and yeah, it was good.
01:57And I have confidence in Jake Moody, because I think last year he was kicking a little bit injured,
02:03and again, I never make excuses for people who play the sport,
02:07but you can see that he was not able to kick with as much confidence.
02:12You look at his rookie year, he was 84%, which last year, that was the dead league average.
02:18And, you know, he made a couple of long ones, and he was pretty good on the extra points.
02:22He only missed one of those.
02:24Last year was not so much that.
02:26So, year three, this is the year, and he's not going to get,
02:29if he comes out and he goes four for his first nine, that's it.
02:34Oh, I don't even know if he'll get the ninth kick if he's four for eight.
02:38You know what I'm saying, though?
02:39Yes, I agree with you, completely.
02:41I mean, or if he's six for six, and he lines up in week three for a 41-yarder to win the game,
02:47and he misses it, and you lose 20 to 19.
02:50I mean, he's one missed kick away in the clutch from being out on the street.
02:55From at least it being a question, yeah.
02:58Well, I think it's already a question, right?
03:00Well, I mean, I don't know that they're on the verge of making a move, but, yeah.
03:03Like, that's why it was so interesting when people were so locked in on the camp kicker battle.
03:10Greg Joseph was on the team, and they're like, wait a minute.
03:13You cut Joseph?
03:14That thing wasn't done yet.
03:16Like, that was a tight battle, and Kyle's like, it doesn't need to be a camp battle.
03:21A kicker is battling for his job every single week, every single kick, okay?
03:29Kickers are like washer fluid in your car.
03:32It's very easy to replace.
03:34You don't need to go discuss this with someone.
03:40If you miss two kicks week one, you bring on a bunch of kickers on Monday, and you sign one of them.
03:46Greg Joseph is a free agent, for example.
03:48Done. So, like, I don't need it to be a camp battle or anything.
03:52I'm just looking for someone, anyone, to consistently kick the ball straight.
03:58And I'll add this, by the way, with regard to, like, okay, yes, 59-yarder, and the miss was, what, 53?
04:05Yep.
04:06These are long kicks, and you get credit for a 59-yarder no matter what.
04:10But I do change my thought process a little bit when you're kicking in a dome.
04:14And that's why I was not thrilled with two crooked kicks, because you were in a dome.
04:22And to me, that lops about eight or nine yards off of every kick.
04:27You know, a 59-yarder in a dome is kind of like a 50-yarder in Cleveland, where he famously missed a huge kick.
04:34Yep.
04:35When Brock Purdy and Brandon Ayuk drove the team down the field and got him in position for what I think was a 41, 43-yarder, something like that.
04:44And he missed it.
04:45So, if you're having a hard time kicking straight in Las Vegas, my man, it's only going to get more crooked in just about every other environment in the league.
04:55Yeah, it just depends on where you're kicking and what the conditions are.
04:59And there's a certain allowance that you have to give a guy when, for example, you're going to Green Bay and going to Buffalo.
05:05I don't even know if he kicked in those games, or probably didn't even matter if he did or he didn't, because those games were blowouts anyway.
05:12But when you have a situation like that, indoor, and you go five for six, that's good.
05:18Even though one of them was a barely made it, and the miss was, you know, left going left, it's kind of like your drive sometimes, where, you know, you get the right hand involved and you hit it left.
05:28And when I hit it left, it always comes back to the right, but you're actually a good golfer.
05:33You hit it left, that thing's going to keep going left.
05:35I had a couple of those snappies yesterday.
05:37Absolutely.
05:38And that's where you don't want to see that from Jake Moody.
05:41But I do think that there's a little adjustment now with the two-step approach, and he's had enough time to where he's going to be ready for the opener.
05:49And if he's not able to kick at the level that they need him to kick at, then they're going to pivot.
05:53We're going to go to the phones in a sec.
05:55I want to like, can we add to what happened in the crossover?
05:58Because everyone's like, oh, Kyle doesn't even talk to kickers.
06:01What a meanie.
06:02There was more on that conversation.
06:05He was asked why he doesn't talk to kickers.
06:07I don't discriminate against anyone, but there's not a lot to talk to them about.
06:11But they need to kick it between those two uprights, and if they want to talk more, that's fine.
06:14I'll do whatever they want.
06:15But I don't pretend like I'm doing something when I'm talking to the kicker.
06:19So I let them try to.
06:20I don't like everyone going up to them either.
06:22I'd like them to just stay mentally clear, lock into their job, and get it done.
06:25I think this is an odd thing to make a thing out of.
06:28Right.
06:28There is no reading of the defense.
06:31Here's the ball.
06:33Kick it straight.
06:34That's it.
06:35There's nothing to discuss here.
06:37There's no game planning.
06:39There's no nothing.
06:41And as he said, if they want to talk, come up and talk.
06:43What's Kyle going to say to Jake Moody to get his head straight?
06:50You're all adults.
06:51This is big boy sports.
06:53The ball has been held on the ground.
06:56Kick it straight.
06:57I don't mean to be crass.
06:59That's the job.
07:00Right.
07:01That's the job.
07:02And the communication comes from the coordinator, Brant Boyer, who will talk to Moody.
07:07And I'm sure they go through all the kicks and foot placement and the mechanics and everything else.
07:11And the only time that Shanahan is going to get involved in that conversation is before the game when he goes up to the coordinator and says, what's the range tonight?
07:20You know, based on the weather, the wind, the direction, and all the rest of it.
07:23And so once Shanahan knows that, all right, he's good from 57, that tells Kyle that if we get to the 40, we can give it a try because that would be 57.
07:32And anything beyond that might be a time where they have to go for it on fourth down.
07:36888-957-9570, anything Niners on the table.
07:41And oh, by the way, we're going to unveil a fancy, fancy fun guest at 315.
07:47We've been working on this because he's been in the locker room the last couple years with these 49ers and is now maybe retired, maybe open to being unretired.
07:59We'll find out.
07:59But offensive lineman John Feliciano is going to join us at 315.
08:05Very, very much looking forward to that conversation.
08:08And I want to tell the YouTube audience that similar to our Valkyries superfan, Brandon Pajemski, and what he did last week, John will be on video with us.
08:19He will be on our YouTube page.
08:21So get over to YouTube.
08:23Fun way to watch and listen to the show.
08:26And John will be on with us at 315.
08:28But anything Niners, Jake Moody, or more on the table, let's talk it out.
08:33Let's start with Nick in Berkeley.
08:34Hi, Nick.
08:34Thanks for calling.
08:35What's up?
08:37Hey, what's up?
08:38So first of all, I just want to say a kicker is like a pitcher that's on a no-hitter.
08:42Don't get near him.
08:43Don't talk to him.
08:44Leave him alone.
08:45You know what I mean?
08:45And I think that's what Shanahan is talking about.
08:47Also, with DeJuan Jennings, man, he saved us a couple times with some crazy-ass catches in the playoffs on like a tip ball or whatever.
08:54He skied up a couple times.
08:56And like his third day, he's a great third-down possession receiver, man.
09:00He makes plus catches all the time.
09:02I've rarely even seen him drop the ball.
09:04I think I've seen one pass bounce on his hand.
09:06It was kind of like high and behind him.
09:07But the man has great hands.
09:09You know what I mean?
09:09He runs where he's supposed to be, running routes.
09:12And I just think that we're giving him too much grief.
09:15The Niners need to pay him a little bit.
09:17And maybe, you know, they shouldn't have signed contract extensions before they signed some key players.
09:21You know what I mean?
09:22Because wide receivers do get hurt.
09:24And that's the thing.
09:25But the Niners didn't punt yesterday.
09:28I mean, Saturday, which was great.
09:30And, yeah, I just was happy that we won the game.
09:32You know what I mean?
09:33It was good for Moody to kick that ball.
09:35But you're right about, you know, I mean, it was weird.
09:38Because, like, they said, oh, he's a great wet weather, you know, cold weather kicker.
09:41I'm like, well, why would you bring him to California today?
09:44Like, you know what I mean?
09:45It's like you draft him.
09:46And, you know, he's an eyedrastic.
09:48And, like, you know, he has a leg.
09:49But there's a lot of guys booming kicks from, like, you know, the other side of the 50, too.
09:53So I don't know why they draft him in the first.
09:55You know, but we got to get over it.
09:56Because when we're at the stadium, we got to have good vibes, man.
09:59We can't be, like, projecting our negative energy on it.
10:01Because then he'll go out there and he'll feel it.
10:03And he'll boot.
10:04He'll kick it somewhere to the little patty over there by the Bud Light side.
10:08Nick, Nick, thanks.
10:09Yeah, I think we're running the risk here of overthinking this.
10:13I don't even really believe in the idea of somebody being a cold weather kicker or a warm weather kicker or this kind of –
10:21I don't know how many kinds of kickers there are.
10:23Kick ball straight.
10:24Right.
10:24But he at least has the experience of kicking in the cold.
10:28Yeah, that's fine.
10:28Last year he was one for three in Buffalo and one for one in Green Bay.
10:32And those were two pretty cold situations, as I recall.
10:37Yeah.
10:37And I just did it real quick, Mark.
10:3913 for 14 field goals before the injury.
10:4311 for 20 after.
10:44So was it the injury?
10:46Was he not 100%?
10:47It doesn't matter.
10:48That's what you did.
10:50So now you need to be more like the 13 for 14 guy.
10:54If you're the 11 for 20 guy, then he's not going to make it to October.
10:57Yeah.
10:57He's not going to be 11 for 20 this year.
10:59Right.
10:59Because he won't be the kicker.
11:01He won't be the kicker.
