00:00The 49ers are giving their fans the exact opposite message.
00:07The subliminal message this week is the exact opposite of what it was this week last year.
00:14Last year, remember, there goes Leonard Floyd, and there goes, like, we're getting rid of, we're getting rid of, we're
00:21getting rid of.
00:21And they're like, all right, who are you signing?
00:23Well, how about Luke Farrell?
00:27And the message was, we're rebooting, and some are like, are you rebuilding?
00:35Are you throwing up a white flag for this year?
00:39And then they weren't, because they did win 13 football games, if you include the playoff win.
00:45But boy, isn't the message different this time?
00:48Doesn't it feel like what they're telling you, Mike Evans and Dre Greenlaw, and then bringing in Odiggy Zua on
00:54a trade,
00:54we're going to give up our third-round draft pick and really, really get an every-down defensive tackle in
00:59there.
01:00The 49ers are telling their fans, we are still very much in this window,
01:04and we are trying to win a Super Bowl for George and for Fred and all of these guys before
01:11they're gone.
01:13Yes, and they were, I think, very transparent about that last year, where coming off the year that they had,
01:19they basically told the fans in free agency, we're not going to go all in because we're coming off a
01:256-11,
01:25and we're just not that team right now.
01:28And so, last offseason was also, you know, trying to figure out Brandon Iyuk and how he was going to
01:33be able to rehab,
01:34and you were trying to, you know, navigate that offseason.
01:38I don't think that you were in a spot where you were going to, like, completely reload,
01:41and now you come off a 12-5 with a playoff win, and yeah, you're going to reload.
01:46You have your quarterback now making $53 million on a big deal.
01:49I do think you need one more tight end.
01:52Ideally, I don't know if that'll be in the draft, and you get somebody that you can control for four
01:56years,
01:57maybe five if it's a first-round pick, but there's some stuff that you can still address in the draft
02:01for the future,
02:02and last year was about the draft, and they got five, their first five picks were all on defense,
02:07and so you wanted to get a younger defense, and you wanted to get a better defense,
02:12and they were both.
02:13They were younger, and they were better, and so now you look at what you have,
02:16and you think, all right, we've got a decent young core on that side.
02:20Offensively, we have an older group, and you add an older receiver,
02:23but you still have other guys you drafted last year that you hope can step up into those roles.
02:28So what's next?
02:29What now for the 49ers?
02:31We're going to go to the phones in just a second.
02:32However, I want to mention this real quick.
02:35Here's how I would answer the question.
02:37I mentioned there are two names.
02:38Let me turn it into two and a half.
02:39I'm going to throw another free agent in at the end.
02:43Look, along the lines of why not, which was kind of my thing with Dre Greenlaw,
02:48I think we've arrived at that spot with Joey Bosa, too.
02:51Joey Bosa is still available on day four of free agency.
02:55Nobody at this stage is going to cost you a lot.
02:58If they were going to cost you a lot, that means a bunch of teams want him,
03:01and they got themselves into a bidding war, and they signed on Monday or Tuesday.
03:05It's Thursday.
03:07It's Thursday, and you start getting Dre Greenlaw for $7 million for one year.
03:13I think that's where we're at with Joey Bosa.
03:16Let's do this.
03:17It was rumored last year.
03:20The opportunity is there again.
03:21It'll cost you even less this time.
03:24Bryce Huff retired.
03:25You need someone who's kind of a specialist, not an every-down guy.
03:29And at this stage in his career, that's what you'd get.
03:33You would get somebody who is a pass rush specialist.
03:37I am in on a one-year deal for Joey Bosa opposite his brother.
03:42Probably about $10 million.
03:43I think that's what the price was estimated to be.
03:45And, yeah, go ahead and bring in Joey Bosa, and hopefully Nick comes back
03:50and he's able to go.
03:50And you talked about an every-down guy.
03:53The way they do it here, there is no every-down guy.
03:56Even Nick Bosa, when he's healthy, he plays about 75% of the snaps.
04:00And they love their rotation, keep guys fresh, and that's most teams.
04:03So can you get a three-down guy, somebody who can be in there against the run
04:07and against the pass?
04:08Well, they did that with the trade with Dallas,
04:10so he's going to be a guy who's not every-down,
04:13but he's a three-down defensive lineman.
04:15So if you can bring in Joey Bosa and go double Bosa with an Osa in the middle,
04:20that's fun right there, right?
04:21Yeah, if you had Bosa, Bosa, Osa, I mean, I would actually be scanning the wires
04:28to find out if there's anybody else who rhymes with these people.
04:31Yeah.
04:32Like, I would feel terrible.
04:33Alfred Collins.
04:34Oh, no.
04:35Yeah, that's a crap.
04:37Sorry, Alfred.
04:38Oh, no, babe.
04:39No, we love you.
04:39We love you.
04:41Great job against Kyron Williams last year, but I'm sorry.
04:44We're going to need to give you a nickname that rhymes with Osa.
04:47Maybe change your last name to Collins Osa.
04:50I'm open to it.
04:51I'm open to it.
04:52So that's one.
04:54Here's my second thing, and this is the concern.
04:59It's more of a what if, but I wonder if we could do the exercise.
05:04There is a reason I'm asking, but I'm going to keep that right here right now.
05:09What if there's more than meets the eye with the Trent Williams situation?
05:17Meaning, like, what if there's more than meets the eye?
05:19Like, he wants more money in longer years, or they're not that into him?
05:25No, it's none of that.
05:27Like, what I mean more than meets the eye.
05:29What if this isn't about money and age?
05:32Those are the two things that do meet the eye.
05:34Like, what if there is something else going on that is kind of putting a wrench in this thing?
05:42Because I do think, I mean, there's still, what, seven or eight days left before that $10 million roster situation.
05:49But also, like, what are we doing?
05:51This isn't, this is not complicated.
05:54It's really not.
05:55Unless he's driving too hard of a bargain, or unless the Niners are driving too hard of a bargain,
06:01and I just don't get the sense that that's where we're at.
06:03That's not like, these two sides, I know we love to get into the drama of it.
06:08These sides like each other.
06:10They've worked together really well, and there's an understanding of what Trent's point is.
06:15Dude, you're the best.
06:16And there's an understanding of what the Niners' point is.
06:18Dude, you're 38.
06:19I think everybody gets that.
06:22And I'm starting to wonder if there isn't something else going on here.
06:26And so the exercise I want to sort of propose, what do the Niners do if they do need to
06:35move on from Trent Williams?
06:36If they do either have to trade him or something.
06:41And financially, cutting him is just, it's not an option.
06:45Financially, that's not an option.
06:46Trading him isn't great either, but at least you could be compensated.
06:52You could be compensated by another team.
06:55And it is at least, by the draft specialist word, a decent to slash pretty good offensive tackle, left tackle
07:06draft.
07:06You know, you've got one first rounder.
07:09There might be a good one there.
07:10What if you got another first rounder?
07:13What if you needed to get Trent and turn him into someone else?
07:19Well, you could do that.
07:20And you could find a team that would take him on.
07:22And then you could go out and get a guy in free agency.
07:26And there are some tackles who are still out there.
07:28I'm looking at the ESPN ranking of who's still out there.
07:31The who's still out there ranking.
07:33Number one, Rashid Walker.
07:35Green Bay.
07:36Offensive tackle.
07:37Taylor Decker from Detroit.
07:38We talked about him earlier in the week as I ran down all the tackles who were taken in the
07:43first round.
07:44He spent 10 years with Detroit and they wanted to cut his salary.
07:47And so he bounced and he's still out there.
07:49And I do think that it's a pretty deep draft in the first round for tackles.
07:53So your pivot point for me would be sign one of these guys to a short-term deal and draft
08:00a tackle.
08:00And, you know, see what you have going forward.
08:02It's not ideal.
08:03It's not ideal.
08:04Because neither of those options will be Trent Williams.
08:07But if this thing gets to a point where he's asking for, like, top-of-the-market money and a
08:12long-term deal,
08:13or maybe they're thinking, you know what, you're 38.
08:15We just want you to play out this last year.
08:18And then, you know, we're going to go ahead and part ways with you.
08:21I'm just wondering if they're in something else going on.
08:24They're just, it's too easy.
08:26Like, what would that be?
08:27Like, what would that something else be?
08:29Well, here's what I'd say, and I'm not suggesting that Trent is about to retire, but look what Bryce Huff
08:35just did.
08:37You didn't see that was coming.
08:39I think we have to always, always, always keep in the back of our mind that these are people.
08:46And so what do you got going on in your life?
08:49Plenty.
08:50Right.
08:51Plenty.
08:51So much so that I'm not going to retire.
08:54And I'll go ahead and announce that now to the audience.
08:56That's right.
08:57Glad to have you.
08:57I got a three-year-old.
08:59No, I heard you're going to actually start working on your second career in stand-up comedy.
09:03So that's all I'm saying.
09:06This stuff happens.
09:07Good job, Dan.
09:07Yeah.
09:09This stuff happens every year.
09:11Bryce Huff just up and retired.
09:14I don't know.
09:15I don't know what's going on.
09:18But we don't really need these reminders.
09:21We're 49er fans.
09:23Trent Williams went through a family situation with, you know, childbirth just a couple of years ago.
09:30Charverius Ward.
09:31There's things going on that, who knows?
09:35And I say that because, hello, this contract situation, to me, outsider, simpleton, all of that when it comes to
09:46this, dude, this one looks easy.
09:49You've already been to war with Trent Williams on a contract multiple times as an organization.
09:56This one is easier.
09:58It's March.
09:59He's 38.
10:01He's really good.
10:02He ain't asking for five years.
10:04He's 38.
10:07What's going on?
10:10And so, hmm.
10:13I mean, first of all, Marvin Gaye, what's going on?
10:16Secondly, we know what's going on, and that is the Niners like to win the deal.
10:20And I don't know if this is Parag Marate doing battle with Trent's agent, but we know that through all
10:26the negotiations we've tracked and our time together, and even before that, before you were here and I was doing
10:31other shows, they want to win the deal.
10:34So it's not as easy as, yeah, Trent, you want more guaranteed money.
10:38How about this?
10:39You good with that?
10:40They're going to want to do it in a certain way.
10:42He's going to want a certain number.
10:43And he also, he controls kind of the tempo of it because he's got that $10 million option bonus coming
10:50due in eight days.
10:51So you're right.
10:53I will just say I'm not convinced that that's what's going on this time.
10:59You're right.
11:01That is how it has gone.
11:02Yeah.
11:03I am not convinced that that's what's going on this time.
11:06Well, I wonder if something different is going on this time, if you're Trent and you're really not sure if
11:12you want to play anymore, then you go ahead and just ride it out.
11:16You take your $10 million option bonus and you get to the summer and then you get to camp and
11:20you say, you know what?
11:22I'm going to retire now.
11:24I'd be kind of screwing them over.
11:25It is.
11:25And usually guys sometimes have to give that money back when they do it.
11:29I, I, I am not, I'm not suggesting Trent's about to retire.
11:32I don't, I don't, I don't think that's going to happen, but I just, um, this one should be easy.
11:38It should be.
11:39Yeah.
11:39Yeah.
11:39So, um, Hey, uh, Tony in West Oakland.
11:43Hey, Tony, thank you for calling.
11:44What's up.
11:46What's up?
11:47Well, D man.
11:49Hey, I'm just, I'm just, I was having it.
11:52I'm just happy that they finally doing something free agency.
11:56And Will, you took, you messed up my call.
11:58Cause I was talking about Joey.
12:00I like that Joey though.
12:02And they got to get something done with Trent.
12:04But I think we got to do something with these safeties, man.
12:08Go get Harrison.
12:10He, Oh, gee, he could get them boys right.
12:12If they don't want to trade them or let them go.
12:14And they can help out Renato.
12:15I think Stout and Lenore is cool.
12:18And I think we should do something in this draft where we need to go get a receiver.
12:22I'm a USC fan.
12:24Go get Zachariah in the second round.
12:26And, and, and you can't, we can't get Keon Sadiq some way in the first round.
12:31Get a tackle and try to go get Zachariah in the second round, man.
12:35I think we good.
12:36I like the way we moving though.
12:38Um, Tony, love it.
12:39Thank you for the call.
12:40Here, here's my reaction to that.
12:41I love what he's, what he's talking about with regard to the safety position.
12:45Um, I know nothing about this safety draft.
12:48Um, but I do wonder if the 49ers are not going to try to address that in the draft.
12:53They have done that.
12:54That's how they've tried to do it a lot in the past.
12:56They are not known for spending big and free agency on safeties.
13:00There also aren't really any very good safeties available right now in free agency.
13:04So I, I do think that needs to be addressed for sure.
13:08As far as the wide receiver thing, here's why I'm not really big on the Niners finding
13:13someone in the draft and wide receiver.
13:15I'd almost rather see them go back out and dip into yet another cheap free agent.
13:21If you feel like that room needs to be bolstered, I hear it's not a great wide receiver draft,
13:27but that's not even my thing.
13:28I'm sure there's some good ones there, but wide receiver is traditionally a position that
13:34takes a minute.
13:35You just don't see it very often.
13:38I'm not saying it doesn't happen.
13:40Lad McConkie comes to mind, um, you know, a couple of years ago, although his second year
13:45was nowhere near as good.
13:46It can happen, but usually even the successful wide receivers, um, take it from someone who
13:53famously dropped Justin Jefferson about eight weeks into his rookie year from a fantasy team
14:00because he wasn't doing that much then.
14:02I laugh at that.
14:04You should, you should, but that's, that's the way the receiver position goes.
14:08The 49ers are trying to win right now.
14:10And I would argue, especially you're drafted at 27.
14:13You take a receiver in the first or second round, you'd be lucky if that guy's contributing
14:18by the second half of the year, they've drafted their receivers last few years.
14:23They've got three or four young ones on the roster.
14:25That's the answer.
14:26Let's go with them.
14:26Right.
14:27And honestly, when you look at what they run and I'm only going to hit you with one 21 personnel
14:32a show in the off season.
14:34I kind of like it when you, uh, when you, when you talk football to me, they run that about
14:3960% of the time, which means two wide receivers right now.
14:42Your two wide receivers are Mike Evans.
14:44Welcome to the team and Ricky Pierce.
14:46All so your need for a third is not that great.
14:49And you have Demarcus Robinson and you've got Jordan Watkins.
14:53You still have Jacob cowing in theory.
14:55He's a guy who's allowed to play if you let him.
14:58So you, you already have receivers who have been here and they can step up into those roles.
15:03I don't think you take a receiver at all, maybe late, late, late in the draft.
15:07But for me, you've got so many other needs and you just did that with Ricky Pierce all.
15:12And I think you got it right actually two years ago.
15:15And if he's healthy, then he is your why, or he is your slot, whatever he needs to be.
15:20And quietly, Juwan Jennings is still out there on the market there.
15:24Although I would argue if he's going to go take a one year, prove it deal from someone,
15:28the last place on earth, he wants to do that is here.
15:31He just did that.
15:32Well, and Mike Evans is on the team now.
15:35So now, you know, the whole idea of, hey, I'll be a big red zone threat for the 49ers.
15:41Well, oops, you got a Hall of Famer in front of you now.
15:43So your chances, you would completely be hoping for major injury.
15:50If you want, if you're Juwan and you want to put up numbers.
15:53Oh, don't get it twisted.
15:54They're over there on the sideline hoping for injury.
15:56I don't know about that, but I mean, you've talked to players.
15:58They're hoping for an opportunity.
15:59Sure.
15:59And even at that, like third and Juwan happened when it was Iuke and Debo and he was the third
16:04receiver.
16:05So they still do run three receiver sets enough to where if he was your third receiver, third
16:11and Juwan, he would get enough opportunity to still be good.
16:15But after the year that he had last year, where he was kind of that dude with five broken
16:19ribs, he wants to go out there and get real money.
16:22And I don't think that the Niners are going to offer him real money.
16:24I agree with you.
16:26Maybe no one will.
16:27Real quick.
16:27You don't think Mac Jones last year was like, dude, turf toe.
16:34Yeah.
16:35Kaboom.
16:36You don't think so?
16:37How many, how many millions of dollars did Mac Jones make because of turf toe?
16:44Because one man's toe?
16:45One man.
16:46You're saying Mac Jones has a foot fetish and it's not his own foot?
16:50He wouldn't be the first in the league.
16:52He's got a toe fetish.
16:53Yeah.
16:54I mean, I'm not saying that's not the case.
16:56You've got to be careful.
16:56I am being careful.
16:57He loves turf toe.
16:59And you would love for me, Grandy, to step into something here and, you know, get suspended
17:04for a couple of weeks because that's an opportunity for you.
17:07Grandy, what do you think?
17:08That's why you play that Go Dodgers drop all the time.
17:11Yeah.
17:11You're seeing right through me, Dibs.
17:12Yeah.
17:14And I said something about somebody's mom earlier in the week.
17:18And of course, he recorded that right away.
17:19He comes in here and coughs on you during commercials.
17:22People don't even bring it up.
17:23Nobody knows because we're off the air.
17:24But yeah, during commercials, Grandy comes in here and coughs on Dibs.
17:28Yeah, I misspoke.
17:29Yeah.
17:29He can't get me any sicker than living with a toddler can.
17:33So, I mean, good luck with that.
17:35Well, good joke, Dan.
17:36Yeah.
17:37I'd have lice if I had hair.
17:40But I don't.
17:41And I don't.
17:43I laugh at that.
17:44Good joke, Dan.
17:44Thank you, Cam.
17:47Cam Inman.
17:47Mac Jones loves tough toe.
17:50He's over there like, you want me to step on it?
17:53I'll make you feel better.
17:54Come here.
17:55Let me step on your toe.
17:56I'll bet it'll feel better.
17:57I mean, he loves it so much that he was almost in tears on the sideline after series because
18:02he was in so much pain.
18:03But got to keep going.
18:05Yep.
18:05I got a couple more games here.
18:07He's like, dude, you want me to puke on Thursday night football?
18:09Totally.
18:10No problem.
18:10No problem.
18:11I'm going right back in.
18:12He got hit on a play and he's rolling around, writhing in pain.
18:16Right.
18:16And he's like, oh, that's right.
18:18The starters got turf toe.
18:20I'm going to have to get up.
18:21You don't want Adrian Gonzalez or what was his name?
18:25Adrian Martinez?
18:26Yes.
18:27Well, you don't want him to come in and cook?
18:29Who knows what that kid was going to do?
18:31Come in here and all of a sudden Brock Purdy the hell out of the second string quarterback
18:34like he did Jimmy?
18:36You don't want that?
18:37So LJ Cryer shows up to practice.
18:39He's like, Steph, man, you look like you're in a lot of pain.
18:42You may want to take an extra 10 days, bro.
18:44Here, let me look at that knee.
18:45Come here.
18:46Bring it over here.
18:46Let me look at it.
18:48Real close.
18:50Tonya Hardy.
18:51Jeff Galluli was the assailant.
18:54Yes, he was.
18:54Why?
18:57Always been one of your more underrated impressions.
19:00Cynthia in San Lorenzo.
19:02Hi, Cynthia.
19:03Thank you for calling.
19:05How are you guys doing?
19:06And thank you for taking my call.
19:08Of course.
19:10First off, I need to say I'm way invested in this stuff way too much because I'm starting
19:14to call you once a week now.
19:16Loving it.
19:17We are loving it.
19:18It's like McDonald's over here.
19:19I'm loving it.
19:22Well, my question is, I never hear you guys talk about the cornerback situation with the
19:27Niners.
19:28I heard the young man, the last call, he liked Lenore.
19:33I think that our cornerbacks are getting burnt out there and I'd like to see the Niners shore
19:38up this cornerback situation.
19:41I think that's a fair point.
19:43And Cynthia, call twice a week.
19:45Call anytime.
19:46You're welcome anytime.
19:48I'll say this.
19:49I think the Renardo Green situation is in flux.
19:54I mean, this season ended with Kyle Shanahan screaming at him on the sideline.
19:59I don't know exactly where the cornerback situation is.
20:03I am a huge fan of Diamant or Lenore.
20:05I do not think that's a problem with the 49ers.
20:08That's a lockdown side.
20:10You're good with Lenore.
20:13Upton Stout obviously came in and had a very good rookie year as kind of a slot corner.
20:19I don't know that he's ready to go be your second corner.
20:23I don't know where the Niners sit with Renardo Green.
20:26I do believe that's another strong position in this upcoming draft.
20:30So I would imagine that that gets addressed on some level.
20:34I don't think it's beyond the Niners that there's a Renardo Green related trade still
20:38ahead before the draft.
20:39Could be.
20:40I don't know.
20:40Yeah.
20:40I think that he ideally would be your backup Upton Stout, barely five, nine in cleats.
20:46So he's going to be your slot corner.
20:47I don't think you could put him on the outside against, especially against the guys in your
20:51division.
20:51So I think that he's a perfect nickel corner.
20:55You put him right there in the slot.
20:56And so you do need another guy outside.
20:58And Renardo Green is entering year three.
21:00And this is kind of when you get to make or break country, because as a rookie, Renardo
21:05Green was a bright spot last year.
21:07I think he took a step, if not two steps back.
21:09And so I don't think you trade him.
21:11The value is not high, but you probably bring in competition at the very least.
21:15I think so.
21:15For sure.
21:16For sure.
21:16For sure.
21:17You do.
21:17So, yeah, I think that could be that could be smoothed over.
21:21The weird thing is, and this almost helps for Renardo Green.
21:24The secondary's biggest problem is the safety play.
21:27I think you're going to say the pass rush.
21:29I don't know.
21:29Well, that too.
21:31Yeah.
21:31That's from a whole complimentary question mark.
21:34Yes.
21:34If they have a better pass rush, then the Renardo Greens and Jair Browns of the world
21:38will look better.
21:39I do believe that.
21:40But their safety play needs to.
21:42I mean, that was a revolving door last year for a reason.
21:44A little bit.
21:45And I think that Malik Mustafa was mostly good.
21:48Jair Brown was great at times.
21:50And then at other times, it was, you know, he made some pretty big mistakes.
21:54Big plays, big mistakes, I thought.
21:55Didn't he win defensive player of the week with that Monday night game that we all went to?
21:59Yeah.
21:59The Panther game?
22:00He had two picks.
22:01Two picks, yeah.
22:01He won that game.
22:03Wasn't Brock Purdy's best night.
22:04No?
22:05Brockistan meetings took a week off after that.
22:07Three picks over the course of eight snaps, I think.
22:10Yeah, it wasn't, but there were five that did not get picked.
