00:00here first of all i don't even know uh grandy how you nailed this i don't i don't i didn't ask you
00:05to play anything by the who i was just reading an article in the chronicle earlier today
00:10uh about the front man of the who roger daltry they're on their supposed farewell tour but the
00:19who are like boxers this is their 18th farewell tour since the 80s like i'm not kidding in 1982
00:27they're like farewell tour and here we are closing in on 50 years later right and your good friend is in
00:36the band now right he is yeah he is but he's just you know he's kind of a hired gun he's their
00:40keyboardist um but daltry is 81 he's 81 years old and they're coming to shoreline i think in october
00:50but the article is i guess he's publicly stating he's like i don't know if i'm gonna make it to
00:54the end he can't see he's got macular degeneration so they used to put things up on the you know you
01:02got the teleprompter there at a concert to help him out with what's going on he's like put the
01:06teleprompter away i can't even see it so um you know teenage wasteland or the opposite i don't even
01:14understand how the hell people are touring and doing rock concerts these people are the exact same age as
01:21my parents who basically need to call someone to get across a room and they're touring and doing
01:29rock shows mark will you help me with my lyrics what are we doing like honestly and i went to see
01:37them like it would this been like three three years ago now when they're in their late 70s i it's i don't
01:44even understand i don't understand how the hell you could be in your 80s and you're like yeah
01:48let's do a rock show he knows the words to the song unless he's like forgotten that you can still
01:56go out there in uh teenage wasteland where's my shawl where are my slippers well there's it's been
02:03running around on instagram as of late i guess acdc trying to do a tour and the guy can't even make
02:08noise anymore but the fans just start singing the song and they don't care because they're also 70
02:14something years old and they're just putting their fingers in the air like yeah it's like the
02:19guy's not even making noise anymore how much money did you pay to go watch somebody in a tank top yeah
02:26who shouldn't be in a tank top i mean you got hair coming out every direction of this tank top
02:32and you can't even make noise into a microphone and you're charging whatever you're charging for
02:38people to come see you rock out it's tough because there's the nostalgia factor i remember seeing
02:45uh sticks in new orleans it was free it was just out there there you go like a plaza well then it's
02:52fine there's no dennis d young and this was uh surrounding the arena bowl arena football and we're
03:00in new orleans and ladies and gentlemen sticks and i look around this outdoor plaza and there's about
03:05172 people yeah and i was like oh boy uh you know wrecking the paradise i'm like oh boy oh boy
03:16yeah you guys can go ahead and shut it down yeah we can go ahead and uh yeah let's shut it down
03:23somebody could sticks a fork in this because it's done my god so so mr cowherd yeah the who
03:29they're old sure i don't know what the niners are old now somebody just texted us hit us up boxer
03:35and gerson work injury attorney's text line uh 262 i see you said the niners are the third oldest
03:40team in the nfl i guess my response to me that that would be how the hell you even know the roster
03:45isn't set yet exactly i have no idea who that how can you like you could say that that if that stat
03:51was true last year i've got news for you they caught a bunch of veterans they drafted a bunch of players
03:57that they're going to actually use this year um i see the niners as being very young on defense in particular
04:05aren't they depending on who makes the team but i mean is fred war fred warner's got to be now the
04:11elder statesman of the defense no yeah and i don't even think he's 30 no i'm just running on the list of
04:1630 year olds and i don't know how old fred is and i was just looking at the 90 man roster and what
04:21they put out right now and i don't believe fred warner is 28 is even 30 yeah 28 so and he's older
04:28than fred on defense anyone um huff might be but i'll look it up even at that i don't even know if
04:34he's 30 yet so defensively i don't think it's gonna be 27 right it's not gonna be a very old group
04:41michael williams is 21 right and what's what's cj west nick bosa obviously still mid-20s
04:48lenore uh renardo green year two i'm sure the safeties aren't old we don't even know who they
04:56are yet you know what i mean so i i don't know are the niners an old team sure in spots on offense
05:03i guess but if that is the sum total and it feels to me that it was um from one person it's just one
05:11person but colin cowherd is down on the niners because they're quote old and my response is but
05:17no they're not so are you still down on them i don't i don't know how to firmly be anything about
05:24the niners right now how can you firmly you know what i mean i i can't firmly tell you they're going
05:31to be great either the only firm thing that is a positive that everyone keeps pointing to is that
05:37schedule and and and so if the niners do end up in fourth place again next year oof oh they they really
05:47are on the wrong track for sure if you lose 11 of those football games i got all kinds of questions
05:55well the real one is if you wind up you know oh and six in the division if the three teams in your
06:00division get the better of you uh each and every time out then you've got real problems and you know
06:06you can even add in if you go oh and six in your division which would be a nightmare scenario then
06:12you've got 11 of the games and you go six and five in those games and you wind up six and 11
06:17that's not good enough because you have to be able to be competitive in your division first and
06:23foremost no matter how you do elsewhere grant brisby of the athletics going to join us in just over an
06:28hour five o'clock on the giants they win again today they've got a winning record it's boogie time
06:34uh here comes the playoff push that dom smith promised just kidding we'll see but i personally
06:40would not start kiway tang on friday night that's just me we'll see what the giants end up doing
06:44but yeah talking about the niners and much more right now eight at eight nine five seven nine five
06:50seventy our buddy maddie barrows um was on with uh with steinian goo earlier today and by the way
06:56trumpeted the exact same thing that david lombardi said about christian mccaffrey uh i think he looks
07:03good now he's not getting a ton of snaps but when he's out there he looks like uh christian mccaffrey
07:09um he had one uh in yesterday's practice where he soundly beat fred warner down the field i think
07:18warner must have bitten on a play action fake and it was this was an easy score uh for a long purdy to
07:25mccaffrey touchdown and that uh purdy to mccaffrey connection short passes deep passes that's been
07:34available to purdy in these practices which leads me to think that okay if he's not back to 2023 form
07:42he's he's pretty darn close i mean i don't know how many how many it's just camp right it's just camp
07:49but we're talking about health this is we're talking about christian mccaffrey i don't know man i i like
07:57i don't i don't know why uh why we would look at this right now again if you if you want to have
08:04questions if you see youth in spots i get that there's always questions it's only august 6th i've
08:10got questions about every team but i i don't understand quite frankly the the the doom and gloom
08:17forecast that i do hear from some not all by any question about any stretch but like uh the doom and
08:24gloom kind of forecast for the 49ers based on the health of players who right now are healthy
08:30and and based on a schedule that ain't getting any tougher it's not i mean teams can get better as
08:36we detailed yesterday but the teams they're going to face had a winning percentage of 400 roughly
08:41last season and so yeah injuries can always derail any team season and that's a given for all 32 teams but
08:48as far as the doom and gloom assuming normal health the biggest question for me it's twofold one a lot
08:56of pups on defense and the other one is your wide receiver depth and you've brought in so many
09:02different receivers during camp to be camp bodies and maybe they stick and robbie chosen is the latest
09:07and you had amon ross st brown's brother for about three days equiminius st brown he was in he was out
09:14you've had guys come and go back in he's back in yeah i can't even keep track anymore keep track
09:19because they bring in a receiver he gets hurt they bring in a new it's happened constantly because
09:24shanahan says he needs 12 receivers to make it work and so bodies right all these bodies which is why
09:29you had to you know cut your kicker battle short because you don't have enough bodies to actually go
09:33out and and do what you need to do so i think that outside of the big injury question it's the young
09:42super young defense and it's the wide receiver depth those are for me the only real question
09:48mark you can look at you can add in the offensive line if you're not a believer in what they're doing
09:53but you know their offensive line was at least average last year if not slightly better it wasn't
09:58their biggest problem it wasn't great um yeah there are question marks there i think a lot of that is
10:03is totally fair uh by the way can we talk about those wide receivers for a second right so um i remember
10:10this is a little bit of a discussion on our station yesterday uh kyle shanahan when asked if juan
10:15jennings injury was real he's kind of like yeah it's it's real but then he ended it with why don't
10:20you go ask him and i was like oh that kind of a prickly interesting way to say it and i think that
10:27got some people going with it's like hey is juan actually hurt or is juan sitting out to protect
10:35the situation as they figure out how to move forward with his contractual hopes i won't call
10:42them demands but contractual hopes well something added to that conversation also from barrows today
10:48listen to what he said about juan it would be a really smart negotiating tactic by juan jennings
10:55juan jennings looked like one of the best guys in camp when camp opened um he was absolutely the
11:01the top receiver he was absolutely brock purdy's favorite target and when he left with this uh this
11:09calf injury um it was apparent that this team was was in trouble at that position not very deep at all
11:16at wide receiver given that brandon iuk is also out given that demarcus robinson likely will be
11:22suspended to begin the season and it might be three games if it is uh you know part of this uh contract
11:29negotiation i think it's uh it's pretty smart okay so again no one will say definitively that
11:36that is what's going on but that curiosity remains that maybe this is negotiating tactical let you
11:42hear what shanahan said yesterday about it in a moment you're listening to 95 7 the game kgmz fm and
11:47hc1 san francisco and odyssey sports station and the home of the golden state warriors and valkyries who
11:52play tonight against the aces at seven right here on 95 7 the game it's always live on the free odyssey
11:57app coming to you live from the laughing monk studios here's shanahan's comment yesterday uh
12:02same thing with his calf it's definitely health related not business related um you can ask him
12:06that but he tells me it's his calf and the calf shows so it's got to be delicate with those calves
12:11okay so he tells me it's his calf yeah the calf shows means that there is something that shows up
12:17on imaging sure with regard to an injury and so if that is what the imaging shows and the calf shows
12:22then yeah you're gonna go ahead and slow play it and whether or not he could you know tough it out
12:27or not if you're in his spot why would you because you don't need to go out there and show anything
12:33when you're not being pressed from below you got ricky pierce all who's going to be wide receiver one
12:38or you are and beyond that who are you really threatened by as a wide receiver if you're juwan
12:45jennings um i mean who's really threatening to make you completely like meaningless on this team oh you
12:53mean like take your spot right or even threaten your roster spot no no one no one no like iuk is out for
13:00the time being and the rest of the guys in there are either camp bodies or unproven right i think the
13:04wide receiver core this year uh provided obviously health and provided that uh that things get figured
13:13out with juwan and i think they will yeah jennings and pierce all are are your top two you got to get
13:19through your first few games without demarcus robinson but then he's ready to go he's a part of this
13:24don't forget jacob cowing he's a part of this when he gets healthy i think they like watkins he's the
13:31rookie he's only a rookie but i think they like kim he's a part of this you heard lombardi bring up
13:36russell gage uh that's a player who's got a hell of a resume as a piece in a wide receiver core
13:44in the nfl i think he's part of this and then we'll see we'll see if anybody else can kind of
13:50break through obviously then brandon iuk looms later into the season as a part of the group as
13:55well i think that's the group i think that's the group and then all these camp bodies who are here
14:00some of them young some of them are veterans um i mean could could some of them break in and out
14:06could somebody finally sign gabe davis i don't know that's all out there but i think the names
14:10i just threw out that's your receiving core this year and if those are provided health which is a
14:16big question in this moment as as we look at it but i like i'm comfortable with that group to be
14:23honest with you yeah i'm not i i just don't think it's good enough i don't think it's deep enough
14:27and i don't think it's good enough and you don't know what you're going to get from brandon iuk when he
14:31does come back coming off of you know surgery to repair two different ligaments cowing has not
14:37shown any real ability to be healthy and stay healthy and demarcus robinson he's looked good
14:44in camp and he misses three games most likely and he's a professional receiver so he should be able
14:50to come in and help some engage the same thing although he's missed the better part of the last
14:55two years due to injury i think that there's more question marks than there is other punctuation
15:01marks like periods and exclamation points yeah i again i'm i'm like projecting this into a football
15:06game and the answer you've always had when we have this conversation is well the niners are a run team
15:13yep so don't overspend on your wide receiver core and whether they have or not you know whatever
15:19obviously they spent a lot on iuk they cleared a lot of money with debo juwan is talking money now
15:25uh you don't have to worry about ricky for a number of few a few more years and then the rest of the
15:30guys are not going to be that expensive um but especially based on the point that you've thrown
15:35out there before which is don't overdo it on your wide receiver room well then i mean don't overdo it
15:42on your wide receiver room so why would you want more than than this they got two first round draft
15:47picks by the way in the room in oh iuk i guess he's in the room i mean yeah i mean he's being i mean he's in
15:54the room but he's not in uniform right and you know pierce saw at the end of the first round that's
16:00that is kind of a of a fun way to uh to portray this this group as really really good i mean no
16:05i'm not saying they're really really good i'm just saying i think that with health they're enough
16:09and you have other receiving like targets that we don't talk about when we're talking about the
16:14receiving room like you've got george kittle and christian mccaffrey no doubt on the field too and
16:19that's important and also it's beyond just receivers catching the ball and i was saying
16:24this to evan on monday about the pff rankings juan jennings last year was number one in wide receiver
16:32blocking in the ground game he number one according to pro football focus and yeah and jennings i'm
16:38sorry iuk and pierce all were number 21 and number 22 they're good respectively so your receivers are
16:45asked to do more than just run around and catch the football and these guys are good at that
16:49no question and and that's because the 49ers were always value the run and that was the other
16:53interesting thing that matt barrow said to steinian goo earlier today uh check this run this stir this
16:59around in your coffee okay are they going to run even more this year than they have in the past
17:05if it changes at all it it might be even more run heavy um because you do have a healthy mccaffrey
17:13because you don't have a healthy brandon iuk because they signed uh luke farrell as you know
17:20the blocking tight end as their um their top free agent addition um and um because you've got juan
17:29jennings as your as your number one whiteout presumably uh to begin the season you know it's
17:35still going to be a run identity but it might even be more so of a run identity this year i mean it's an
17:43interesting comment and i know that the brains for some people will immediately go to oh hell
17:48uh they're going to run christian into the ground again sure and guess what they might they might
17:56they might but they don't automatically have to and i go back to i guess it was the 2019 year
18:01where you didn't have mccaffrey you had mostert and brida and jeff wilson jr and it was a complete
18:08committee mostert took the whole thing by the scruff of the neck late in the year but you look
18:14at the total carries and the three of them shared the load and you went all the way to the super
18:19bowl so even if mccaffrey doesn't have 300 carries this year whatever the number is you feel like with
18:26the shanahan offense you can find maybe it's jordan james and maybe it's you know isaac garendo or
18:32somebody else who can tote the rock and you should be able to be successful if all things are equal
18:38i mean y'all y'all play fantasy football like everybody plays fantasy football right
18:43everybody has a story of how you probably or you or someone won a league because of a running back
18:52that rolled through the second half of the season for you who you had never even heard of
18:59when the season started either didn't even get he might not have even existed he might have been
19:06on somebody's practice squad but that's largely what happens um if you can get through a season
19:13healthy with any running back there is some measure of it being a miracle with the number of hits that
19:20they take and that'd be my other response to the concern about christian mccaffrey injury
19:25i mean the shanahan last name for years in the nfl was defined by this it's defined by the idea that
19:34yeah we could stick anybody back there in that backfield and they're going to get production and
19:39i know a lot of people will go yeah but look mark mccaffrey went down last year and the season went to
19:44crap and i'd argue actually it it didn't have that much to do that wasn't the lead reason his backup came
19:53in and was a star his backup came in and was running at league leading levels and he got paid and he got
20:02paid i will never worry about somebody with the last name shanahan getting production from the run
20:11game now christian is special but i worry much more about pass protection i worry about the defensive
20:18backfield i worry about the niners stopping the run i worry about all of those things more than
20:25can the 49ers average over four yards per carry yeah last year they averaged 4.7 a carry and they
20:30didn't have mccaffrey they had jordan mason and the previous year when they had mccaffrey led the league
20:37in rushing and you had 21 rushing and receiving touchdowns that year they averaged 4.8 a carry
20:44so 0.1 yards more per carry the big difference and i've shared this with you ad nauseum when the
20:53niners run it more than they pass it they win at a much much higher rate because that's the way
20:58and it's proven for all teams and i did a deep dive and i went back i think uh all the way through the
21:05shanahan era and there have been 25 teams who have run the ball more than they've thrown it in terms of
21:11attempts 20 of those teams made the playoffs 20 of 25 80 so it's not just shanahan who when you run
21:20it more than you pass it you get success but i do think that the shanahan years when they have that
21:26that level of running over passing that's when they really do well i think that's his biggest comfort
21:31spot i i do i'll also say this though i think kyle or any good nfl coach they realize on a yearly
21:37basis kind of what they have what's the weaponry that they have and how do we maximize that
21:42you know i think to the year that matt ryan won mvp with shanahan as the offensive coordinator so he
21:48has matt ryan he's got julio jones he had some people behind julio jones um and he did not have
21:55necessarily the greatest it was a good but not the greatest run game so i think they threw it a lot
22:01more than than they ran it and that was kind of their calling card that's probably not this team's
22:08calling card uh brock purdy is not mvp level at quarterback and the receiving core certainly not
22:15early in the season is not ready to be dominant either um but i like to me if it's complimentary
22:23it's it's good enough but i don't know man like nfl coaches i don't think you call plays and coach
22:31games worrying about injuries i like yes if you're if you're wondering are our coaches willing to run
22:39people into the ground the answer is yes if they think it'll win them the game exactly in the interest
22:44of winning the game and the atlanta year you're referring to they threw it 116 more times than they
22:51ran it and it was because of julio jones and matt ryan and that year you did get over a thousand
22:57yards from davante freeman and tevin coleman on 500 so they could do both that offense was just
23:03awesome in both phases
