00:00What'd you think? 888-957-9570. It's Jonathan in the city. Hi, Jonathan. Thanks for the call.
00:07Good afternoon, Mark and Debs. I just want to say, man, they got lucky, but luck's a part of the game, so we'll take that win.
00:14But my takeaway is, hey, Brock, he can't be late on throws, bro. He cannot be late on throws, and that's exactly what happens when he threw those two INTs.
00:23I believe that would have been a third INT, but Tonjes, man, this new guy, hopefully that's not a one-hitter from the dude.
00:31Hopefully this guy's a diamond in the rough, and I would like to see multiple tight end sets, especially when George comes back.
00:41And that bigger tight end, I forgot his name. He could be the blocker that sent Tonjes and George out in the pasture
00:49and be route runners out in the field because the kind of quarterback that Brock is,
00:55we're going to need guys who are going after the ball a lot, kind of like Jennings, right, with those kind of dudes.
01:02And then also, I love what I saw with Purcell. It looks like he's going to be a player.
01:07The defense is coming along, although that run defense in the first half is kind of soft.
01:12But they need to tighten that up. And game one, keep building and keep getting better. Go Niners.
01:20Go Niners. That's a dub. Thank you, Jonathan. Appreciate it.
01:24And yes, we are now 0-for-1 on Tonjes pronunciations.
01:28It's all right. We'll hang in there. And that other guy is Luke Farrell.
01:32The big guy he was talking about. I'd like to see that big guy in there.
01:36And you watch the film again, and what you saw in the second half was a ton of two running backs
01:42and two tight ends and just one wide receiver. And that was before and after Juwan got hurt.
01:48And they realized that if they want to throw it, they need to have other people out there blocking.
01:53They need to have people.
01:54Because the five blockers were not doing enough of the blocking to give Brock time.
01:59So they went to a lot more youth check on the line and extra tight ends and the whole thing.
02:04Again, if you are in Brock Purdy assessment mode, which a lot of people always are.
02:11Always, right?
02:11Always up.
02:13I just want to add a couple things.
02:14This is what has, for me, two things kind of stood out that made what I would have.
02:19Put it this way, if we were doing Grandy's grades, and we will tomorrow,
02:23I'll go ahead and give you a little snapshot preview of where I am on Purdy.
02:28If you had asked me last night, I probably would have gone C+.
02:32Today, I'm B-.
02:33I'm going to move it up a little bit for two reasons.
02:37Number one, I now better, I think, understand the thought process and what he was doing
02:42on the touchdown pass to Tonjes.
02:45I think he was playing that play as a little bit more desperation mode as opposed to,
02:51ah, that's a good idea, like, screw the field goal, man.
02:53This ain't working.
02:54And I support that.
02:55And then secondly, when I saw the stat that Brock Purdy, and I really want to drive this
03:00home today, okay, the number one pressure rate in any game in his career, Brock Purdy
03:09yesterday, that was the most pressure he has ever faced in his career.
03:14A 58% pressure rate.
03:16If you don't know what pressure rate, that means 58% of the time that he dropped back,
03:20he's facing intense pressure.
03:22So, that is going to force some sort of wonky decisions.
03:27Now, Jonathan called the two interceptions late.
03:30I would not use that label on both of them.
03:32I would on the second one.
03:34The one, that second one, I thought, bad decision, in traffic, late, and floated.
03:39Unnecessary.
03:39The first one was a great play by the defense.
03:44Yeah, he got duped.
03:44And he got duped.
03:45He didn't see him.
03:46And he also, ah, man, his fingertips away.
03:51Like, it was a really nice catch.
03:52Fingertips away from getting that in there.
03:55So, that one bothered me less.
03:57Look, a pick is a pick.
03:58That makes it a bad throw.
04:00But I don't think on the first one he was late.
04:02I just think he misassessed the coverage.
04:05And the second one, though, for me, was the bad one.
04:08Yeah, and that was, you know, largely into double, if not triple coverage.
04:12That's going to be a tough throw, no matter what.
04:14The first one, and I was listening to the analysis from the commentators
04:19and also from Shanahan after, where, you know,
04:23you're supposed to have CMC out there as the safety valve,
04:26but he got knocked off the route.
04:27So, he's on the ground.
04:29So, the linebacker sees it, and now he drops deeper than what Brock Purdy would have thought.
04:34So, Brock throws it thinking over the linebacker in front of the safety.
04:38I got this, but the linebacker dropped way deeper.
04:41Not to excuse it, but it's just the way that that thing kind of went.
04:44Yeah, like, interceptions happen.
04:46Like, they're all going to have them.
04:47That, to me, is in that.
04:48There's categories.
04:49Some of them are bad luck.
04:50Some of them are, yo, I was trying to do this, and they did that, and they got me on that.
04:55And then there are some where you're just like, dude, what are you doing?
04:58So, I put them in two different categories.
05:01I thought the first one was like, oof, tough.
05:03That's not a great play, as it turned out, but gives Seattle credit.
05:07And, yes, there's some things that led to that.
05:09The second one, yeah, bad decision.
05:11Bad decision, bad execution, bad interception all the way around.
05:15Let's go to Mike in Santa Clara.
05:18Hi, Mike.
05:19What are you doing?
05:19What's up, guys?
05:22Just pulled over just to talk to you.
05:25Just, man, first thing I got to say is happy Victory Monday, and tight end university is
05:31looking pretty good right now after that ton just catch and everything.
05:35So, that was probably my favorite reaction out of anything was just Kittle, just on the
05:40sideline after that happened.
05:41Like, you know, just, you know, tight end university, there you go.
05:45So, my takeaways from it, you know, look, the first thing is, Pearsall, he looks like
05:53a baller, as it is, you know, especially with, like, the lack of weapons that are coming
05:57around right now, especially after the injuries and the current injuries, and the player and
06:02the receivers that are still not familiar with the offense.
06:05You know, he balled out.
06:08Kittle played his part in the case, and hopefully he gets better within a couple of weeks.
06:12But, the other thing I wanted to talk about was, you know, just the defense in general,
06:17just standing pat, being able to get down to where the nitty-gritty of where it came
06:23down to.
06:24And, on the Seahawks side, I do want to say, you know, big props to JSN.
06:29That guy was a baller last night, too, especially with making those crazy catches, you know,
06:34minus the fumble.
06:35But Charbonnet, man, that guy looked like, I don't know where Kenneth Walker's going to
06:39be in that case, but Charbonnet, he looked like the better back in that case.
06:43But Purdy, Purdy had an overall okay game, in my opinion.
06:48Personally, with that Tonjes catch and everything, I thought that was going to get picked off.
06:53But he ended up coming up with that in the end.
06:55But I think Purdy had a lot of good poise in the pocket, especially with just reading
06:59the pocket and just moving around the pocket as well.
07:02So, I just think, overall, good win.
07:04It wasn't the cleanest win, but hey, what do you expect with a divisional rivalry game?
07:09You know, those are always the toughest ones to come about.
07:13So, great win.
07:14You know, let's just move on to the next.
07:16And we're still looking good, especially with the schedule that we have.
07:20So, go Niners.
07:21Mike, thanks, man.
07:22It's funny, because I really think that if we were clear-headed prior to this game,
07:28and I actually think listening to a lot of 49er fans over the last few weeks, we were.
07:31However, did you hear anyone go, oh boy, Niners is going to go into Seattle and roll.
07:37No, of course not.
07:38This, then 31 to 10.
07:40Like, I didn't hear any of that.
07:41No, and if you talk about what you thought the record would be, if you thought 10 and 7,
07:46honestly, that would be one of the seven losses, I think.
07:49I agree with you.
07:49I agree with you.
07:50I think a lot of people went into this game going, there's a lot of questions.
07:53I'm not sure how it's going to go.
07:55We got some things that are going to need to fall our way.
07:58And then we'll probably need to deal with a little bit of perversity.
08:01There's adversity to even start with the fact that the wide receiver core has been put together
08:06by band-aids for the last few weeks, and you're going on the road.
08:10Plus, it's Seattle, and there's pieces of that you know, and then there are all these pieces about it
08:15that you don't know.
08:16It's like their receiver core is completely new.
08:20Jackson Smith and Jigba is now the one.
08:22Cooper Cupp's there.
08:24New quarterback.
08:25New quarterback.
08:25The coach is a defensive guy.
08:28Got all these new things to figure out.
08:30And yeah, some of them trended that way, and some of them trended this way.
08:35And so, you get a very close game in the end.
08:38I would have predicted it to be a little bit more high-scoring.
08:40Yeah, not me.
08:41But I absolutely thought that we're, like, you're looking at a grinder,
08:46which is why I was so freaking worried about Jake Moody,
08:50and then exactly what I was worried about happened.
08:53Yeah, it happened.
08:53And then they still won.
08:54They did.
08:55And, you know, he missed one, and he had another one blocked,
08:58which was not his fault.
08:59That's not his fault.
09:00But it goes to the entire operation.
09:02And so, the operation, and you can blame the kicker when it's a good snap, good hold.
09:07Everyone blocks and he misses.
09:09Yeah, it's your fault.
09:10But, in general, the whole unit has to be better so that he feels comfortable
09:15to where he can go out there and make a kick.
09:18And so, I'm not saying that's why he missed the first one.
09:20That was just an absolute block job where you can't miss a kick from that length.
09:25And, you know, Kyle Shanahan seems to be of the mind right now to stand by him.
09:30But I look at that game and the way that game went,
09:33and you had your best tight end go out,
09:36you had your No. 2 wide receiver go out,
09:38and you had a real fight on your hands, and yet you were able to pull it out.
09:42You were able to pull it out.
09:43Now, listen, I'm also, you know, you're 4-0.
09:47That's an early victory lap.
09:49I'm not ready to take one,
09:51and I probably won't be for at least half the year,
09:55but I just want to ask,
09:57how does everyone feel about my Ricky Pearsall predictions now?
10:04It's looking pretty good.
10:05That's all.
10:06Like, he could get hurt this week.
10:08Things could change, blah, blah, blah.
10:10I don't even want to bring that stuff up.
10:11I understand all that.
10:13But Ricky is a player.
10:18And I begged everybody throughout the month of August to believe me when I told you,
10:23that's WR1.
10:25That's WR1, which is precisely why,
10:28if I were Drew Rosenhaus,
10:29I'd have been begging Jawan Jennings,
10:32dude, I don't know what extension they offered you,
10:34but if it was in any way fair,
10:36take that, my man.
10:38You are not putting up 1,000 this year.
10:41Period.
10:43Like, I just did not even,
10:44I did not see that as possible,
10:46and now what has happened for him is literally the worst-case scenario.
10:49And we'll find out more here coming up in the next hour,
10:52what the extent of the injury is.
10:53But, yeah, your Pearsall take is looking really, really good.
10:58And you think about that opening drive,
11:00and we talk a lot about the Shanahan script and the opening drive again,
11:0495 yards, Shanahan scripted,
11:07including back-to-back plays,
11:09Pearsall for 26 on third and eight,
11:11Pearsall for 13 on first and 10.
11:14And, you know, that 26-yarder on third and eight,
11:17that was a huge play early in the game that led to the touchdown.
11:21And, you know, you were starting to stall out a little bit.
11:24Third and eight, not easy.
11:25Boom.
11:26Where's Ricky?
11:27Pick it up.
11:27I predicted 1,000 yards, 896 to go.
11:32Yeah, 104.
11:33On four catches, by the way.
11:35On four catches.
11:35Which is, that's the thing that, you know, really kind of pops.
11:38And the other thing, and we can get more into this as the week goes on,
11:41and we find out about Jawan Jennings,
11:43but you mentioned it before with Sky Moore, MVS, and Russell Gage,
11:48no targets among the three of them.
11:49So, outside of Jawan and Ricky, your wide receivers were nonexistent.
11:54Yeah, and don't sleep on Jordan Watkins.
11:56I know he's a rookie.
11:57I think he might be available next week, too.
11:59So, you might, instead of Russell Gage and MVS,
12:02you might be getting Kendrick Bourne and Jordan Watkins.
12:04Yeah, wow.
12:05As a wide receiver two and three.
12:06I don't know how everyone feels about that,
12:07but that might be what we're getting.
12:09We'll see.
12:1049er David in Concord is next up.
12:12What's up, David?
12:13How you doing?
12:14Yeah.
12:15I'm doing great.
12:16Thank God football's back.
12:18I haven't called in in, like, six months because after basketball ends
12:22and until football starts, it's just total dead time.
12:25Anyways, all right.
12:28Usage rate for McCaffrey, 22 runs, 10 targets,
12:32and the Niners had 70 offensive plays.
12:35I don't like it.
12:35What do you guys think?
12:36Well, which part of it do you not like?
12:42The dude is, he's going to get injured, like, all of a sudden,
12:46and then you're going to be lost.
12:47Okay, so let's address that.
12:49David, thank you, real quick.
12:51Well, the real way to look at it would be his snaps, which were 58 snaps.
12:55Right.
12:55And his usage beyond that was 32 targets and rushes on 58.
13:01I thought that people last year were doing a whole lot,
13:04and not so much maybe last year, more the year before,
13:07but they're like, why aren't you using Mason more?
13:09Well, they did use Brian Robinson.
13:12They used him a lot.
13:13So the 31 touches is, to me, not a result of his usage.
13:19It's a result of the fact that it was needed.
13:23George Kittle was gone, and then Juwan was gone,
13:25and it's like we just have to give the ball to Christian.
13:28He's out there, and you are trying to win.
13:31So, no, he's not going to get 31 touches per game.
13:34As you've said, that would be a record.
13:37He's not going to go north of 500 touches this year.
13:39Is he going to get it hurt at some point?
13:41Maybe.
13:42He is 29 years old with a lot of mileage.
13:44But once you get in the game and the plays are just being run,
13:49I'm not going to look at a wide-open Christian and be like,
13:52I'm not throwing the ball to you because I don't want your usage to be wrong.
13:57Do you know what I mean?
13:57Totally.
13:58It's like the game's going, dude.
13:59If he's out there, let's go.
14:01Here's the ball.
14:01Let's play.
14:02That's right.
14:02And he gave you the best chance, especially when you lost Kittle,
14:05and then you lost Juwan.
14:06So that gave you the best chance to get yardage and go forward.
14:10So, yeah, he played 58 snaps, three-quarters of the game,
14:14and when he was out there, he got the ball almost every time.
14:17So, yeah.
14:17So, yeah, I'm going to put it in on the line.
14:19I'm going to play that.
14:21So, yeah.
14:22So, yeah.
14:23This is a game, dude.
14:24So, yeah.
14:25It's like the middle of a game.
14:27I'm going to play this game.
14:27So it was figuring out how to get it.
14:28So, yeah.
14:29So, yeah.
