00:00Sabrina 90's show episode, Terrible Things.
00:04Sabrina sees Libby talking to people and runs into the bathroom and magically changes clothes, causing Jenny to compliment her outfit.
00:11Nice to see her be successful with her powers.
00:15Salem tells Sabrina to lie to Zelda that she didn't see him, and she isn't convincing about lying.
00:21I guess because she likes Zelda too much.
00:24It turns out Salem's being expected to do community service.
00:27I'm glad he has to do that a lot.
00:31I can't wait to actually see him do community service.
00:36Sabrina lampshades that he's selfish, and Salem tells her she's a hypocrite.
00:41So she resolves to do a few good things with her magic.
00:45And then Salem warns her that if she uses magic to be good, there could be terrible consequences.
00:51So he didn't really think ahead about the consequences himself when he lectured her about being a hypocrite.
00:57He didn't really want her to do good.
01:00Out of nowhere, Salem acts like he's responsible.
01:04Why would he care?
01:06It turns out Jenny and Libby are running for student body president, so Sabrina rigs the election for Jenny.
01:11Then after a teacher whines annoyingly for long enough and drops his briefcase, Sabrina feels like staying with him, so he complains to Sabrina that he's underpaid but loves his job.
01:26I'm glad there was a message in the show about how underpaid teachers are.
01:31He says that he can't turn lead into gold, and Sabrina uses magic to get him the idea about how.
01:37I don't blame her for thinking that what she's doing will be worth it.
01:41He says that his idea breaks the laws of physics, but he still keeps it up.
01:46Which has to be a part of the spell.
01:49I read on Good News Network that some scientists using a particle accelerator turned lead into gold for a really brief moment on a subatomic level.
01:58So technically, as I always assumed, it is possible.
02:03But he doesn't have access to a particle accelerator, so it really does break physics, because he'd only be able to do this to get a bunch of permanent gold if her spell gave him the magic power to do this.
02:14And it'd only be temporary, based on what I know about Sabrina, where its witches can run out of magic.
02:19Logically, you'd think she'd be without magic for the rest of the week after this, because he wouldn't just use the power to turn lead into gold one time.
02:31So that's a lot of magic she used up for him.
02:34Hilda tries to teach a student the violin, and he does bad at it, and Sabrina asks why she doesn't magically make him good at it.
02:42Zelda says you should be careful about meddling in mortals' lives, and that witches have rules.
02:47If she weren't an idiot, she'd explain what the punishment for breaking the rule is that doesn't seem to exist anyway.
02:55Or it's too minor to discourage her.
02:57Hilda didn't get in trouble for zapping up ice cream for Sabrina, and that's a good deed.
03:03So she should have lied.
03:05And she would have known to tell her this in the first episode.
03:09Because you'd think she would have tried to do good with her powers in the pilot.
03:13It was smart of Hilda that she didn't want people to stop paying for violin lessons.
03:19But it'd be a better response that they'd figure out she's a witch if she makes them too good too fast.
03:26At least now I know what her job is.
03:29She expected to be convincing that it's impossible to know what'll make mortals happy.
03:34She should have said,
03:35In the long run.
03:37And that in the short term it can look like a will, but they might regret it later.
03:42So naturally Sabrina says the predictable rebuttals.
03:45And Zelda warns her that there could be consequences.
03:48I guess the reason she coincidentally says in a melodramatic spooky tone that terrible things could happen just like Salem did,
03:55Is that Salem only said that to imitate her.
03:58But it wasn't a character for Zelda in the first place.
04:00At least it seems to be because it's goofy.
04:02So it's like she's making fun of somebody.
04:06At least Jenny's self-aware that Libby's the more believable winner.
04:10Libby was going to offer the students more pizza and dances.
04:14But that was going to be good too.
04:17Mr. Poole's in a good mood.
04:18And he says that whoever can get the right answer gets some gold.
04:22So he's actually a better person than I thought.
04:25Hilda lets Sabrina tell her what she was vaguely confiding in Salem.
04:28And Hilda zaps up pizza and then lectures her about being a character to the 70s Sabrina completely for the first time in the show.
04:37Hilda somehow hates the pizza she zapped up even though she'd have known what's imagined taste was.
04:44Why would she even bother zapping up pizza anymore if she can't zap up good tasting pizza?
04:49Because it would correspond with a brand.
04:51Because they'd have to zap up a brand that never existed before.
04:57It turns out Harvey got hurt during the football game because he was too small and had no business having that particular position.
05:04I guess Sabrina's responsible for it because the announcer said this is a terrible thing.
05:09Which seems a bit forced.
05:10Not literally forced but coincidental enough to be tacky.
05:13So many things happened in a previous scene that I might have missed out on on doing something for Harvey.
05:20Living makes Harvey feel better by feeding him pizza.
05:24While realistically Mr. Poole's still happy.
05:27Which subverted my expectations of playing a money is in everything cliche.
05:32Which would have treated us kind of like idiots.
05:35Jenny gets told she's got no authority in what she wants to change.
05:39And the principle goes from realistically telling her that repeatedly to giving her a melodramatic speech that all of the decisions she wants to make are controlled by people in the shadows far away from here.
05:50Which sadly doesn't make it clear enough that he's against.
05:53Just as Tone does.
05:55He should be more against it.
05:57Because that would affect him too.
06:00Making him basically a puppet.
06:02He doesn't explain what he does have authority over but doesn't feel like he has much of anything.
06:07He says student body precedent has always been a popularity contest.
06:13And somehow he says let's keep it that way.
06:16It's the least believable when he shreds her piece of paper in front of her.
06:20And then of somehow expect him to believe the Witch's Council wants to complain at Sabrina justifiably for the consequences of causing an athletic injury and fixing a student election.
06:30And changing the laws of physics.
06:33That's not what she did.
06:34She'd be whined at forgiving of mortal powers.
06:38I'm glad he's whining about the justifiably bad consequences and not about the fact that she did good.
06:44Well I say that because he complains about the consequences.
06:48But he literally says that he doesn't care how much he abuses her magic on people.
06:53So why would he only care about bad stuff happening to mortals if it's not on purpose?
06:59The only thing that's different between them is incompetence.
07:04So if the only thing he's really against is that she didn't think ahead, then he should just say that.
07:10He keeps saying terrible and uses magic to sound scary.
07:14So they're both quoting Drell.
07:18And it sounded goofy because he was making fun of the person he was talking to.
07:23He says that if everyone could make lead into gold, they would collapse the world economy.
07:27Somehow not getting that only Mr. Poole can do this.
07:30And because of the spell, only Mr. Poole would try to do it.
07:35Because only he knows he could.
07:37He tells Sabrina to fix what she did in one day.
07:42That's all?
07:44It would have been more disappointing that she didn't take his date offer to benefit Sabrina again.
07:50If we didn't already expect her to fix things really quickly.
07:55Eventually Sabrina gets rid of Mr. Poole's gift.
07:59He says that he somehow never wrote down how to turn lead into gold.
08:03Yeah right.
08:04He literally started writing on the board as he was getting the idea.
08:09I guess what he means is he never wrote it down the second time.
08:13Jenny says to the other students that she thought her job was about more than dances and pizza.
08:18But she was wrong.
08:19She wasn't morally wrong.
08:21So I wish she explained that she doesn't have the power to do anything but dances and pizza.
08:26That's all about giving bread and circuses to the students while giving them the illusion that they have power.
08:31And she ends up giving her job to Libby.
08:34I wish it was someone other than Libby.
08:36Sabrina would have helped her friend anyway.
08:38And technically there's no reason she can't give the students dances and pizza herself.
08:44I get her not wanting the job anymore because she's so depressed that she can't do what she wants with it.
08:49It would have been funny if she chose some random girl so Libby could complain.
08:56Maybe she's not allowed to choose anyone but the runner-up.
08:59Jenny says she's happy she learned from this experience.
09:03Though that's only the case because she's mature.
09:06Harvey says that since he got hurt, he's been having fun because he's reading and writing more.
09:11And his grades are going to improve.
09:13He's super happy not playing football.
09:16And relatably asks her not to tell his dad.
09:19Sabrina wastes time telling Mr. Poole that maybe he'll be happier not being rich.
09:24And misinterprets that she's not supposed to help anyone even though it's not with magic.
09:29She does help thankfully.
09:30And surprisingly, the story doesn't have her and Mr. Poole explain that money isn't everything.
09:36There's real studies showing that while some money makes you happier, it plateaus after a certain amount of wealth.
09:43Mr. Poole wouldn't be so mad about not being rich anymore if he had been smart enough to not spend all of that money on luxuries in one day.
09:51He could have anticipated that he'd lose his magical gift, but his own bad spending habits are the real problem.
09:57Sabrina thankfully proves that she hasn't learned to not help people anymore with her magic.
10:04She zaps up a briefcase, but the principal steals it.
10:08She couldn't have put it in the room right away because Mr. Poole was still there, so he'd wonder how she got it so fast.
10:14Well, it still helps someone with no consequences.
10:18Also, Mr. Poole would still have the luxuries he bought.
10:22At least until he sells him out of desperation, which I assume he would do off-screen.
10:26But that's money he would have never had without her.
10:29That would include the Ferrari.
10:31I doubt he would be able to afford to keep paying for its insurance.
10:35And he does ask to start washing the thief's car again.
10:39The negative consequence to making Mr. Poole able to turn lead into gold did actually exist.
10:44Because it wasn't washing someone's car for cheaper than a car wash anymore.
10:48This should have been what Drell whined about.
10:51Not a consequence that hasn't happened yet.
10:56This story by John Sherman was about Sabrina being completely true to the 70s comic for once by helping people with their magic.
11:03Only for her to find out that it causes Harvey to get hurt in football.
11:07Causes Mr. Poole to stop washing someone's car regularly.
11:11And causes Jenny to win an election fraudulently just to find out that her position had no power.
11:16She couldn't have known that Jenny would be a puppet ruler anyway.
11:19So she gets lectured for a flaw that she's going to have for the rest of the show.
11:24Most of the problems solve themselves making Drell look like he completely overreacted to Sabrina.
11:30Though not as much as he'd expect of an evil witch because he merely gives her a day to fix what she did.
11:35But this kind of system is not really a valuable thing to add to the world of Sabrina.
11:42Since Drell told her that he doesn't care how much Sabrina abused her magic on her students.
11:47Then he should have had a problem with her when her magic backfires on them when it was well intentioned.
11:52At that point, it'd have only made sense if it just stayed faithful to the source material.
11:58Had him say that he doesn't want her helping mortals because they're inferior.
12:02Since he already thinks that it'd be fine with her magic's consequences if they're intentional.
12:07If witches think mortals are so inferior, why would they respect their independence and right to elect their own representatives?
12:14It must be because they like watching how they run themselves out of morbid curiosity.
12:18I'm glad that the story doesn't end with Sabrina deciding to swear off using magic to help people.
12:25Because that'd get rid of half the appeal of the series if she stayed true to it.
12:29She didn't think it through before she zapped up a briefcase just to leave it out in the hall either.
12:34Because she didn't have time.
12:36She didn't learn her lesson.
12:37Which makes sense since most of the people she inconvenienced were grateful in the long run.
12:42I'm glad she didn't.
12:44I was okay with watching most of this.
12:46It helps that they didn't show Harvey get hurt.
12:51It's pretty impressive to make a story that sounds like it would be really depressing.
12:56Just for it to be fine to experience.
