00:00Several communities in east and central Trinidad were affected by the heavy rainfall from last
00:05night into this morning. Areas such as San Rafael were heavily affected by the muddy and raging
00:11water floods. When TV6 visited San Rafael, the Karani and Manuel Congo River were almost at full capacity.
00:18Our next stop, Central. We ventured through St. Helena and Kunapir where we noticed several homes were underwater.
00:32Residents breathed through the knee-high water in an attempt to make their way through the flood zone.
00:38In a video on social media, trucks, cars and vans can be seen driving through the flood water in Kunapir.
00:48So, Councillor for St. Augustine South, Piaco, St. Helena, Richard Rampersad tells us of areas within his district
01:00that are heavily affected and are in difficult position.
01:04What I can tell you as Councillor for the Electoral District of St. Augustine South, Piaco, St. Helena,
01:11several communities within that jurisdiction are in fact flooded as we see.
01:18Consular Rampersad said his main concern is treating the breaches along the Karani River.
01:35Because of the neglect over the years by the previous administration, insufficient work was done.
01:44And now we would have inherited a lot of issues in terms of the Karani River embankment I'm referring to.
01:53The breaches in the embankment now allow for the river water to exit the river and come into the community.
02:00Obviously, that poses a problem.
02:03First, one is that coming into the community where the residents reside, you know,
02:09putting themselves and their property subject to damage and inconvenience and loss.
02:15I am at the HICC.
